The standard treatment for this includes hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and pelvic lymph node dissection. The advancement of laparoscopy has facilitated the use of minimally invasive techniques also in the field of oncologic surgery. Every new approach should be evaluated in terms of oncological outcomes. This study aimed to compare the oncological outcomes among women with early-stage endometrial cancer treated using laparotomy and a laparoscopic approach. \u0000Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients with early-stage endometrial cancer treated in the Department of Gynecologic Oncology and Breast Oncology, University Medical Center Maribor. All consecutive patients who underwent laparotomy (from 2001 to 2006) or laparoscopy (from 2008 to 2016) were included. All patients had a standard surgical treatment: hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and pelvic lymph node dissection. We analyzed the prognostic factors in each group of patients, which could affect our primary and secondary goals. The primary goal (the recurrence rate) and secondary goal (the disease-free survival) were determined during a follow-up of at least 5 years. \u0000Results: A total of 73 consecutive patients who underwent laparotomy from 2001 to 2006 and 60 consecutive patients who underwent laparoscopy from 2008 to 2016 were included in the analysis. No statistically significant between-group difference was found in the prognostic factors, except the adjuvant radiotherapy being more frequent in the laparotomy group (change in clinical practice). No statistically significant between-group difference was found in the disease recurrence rate [6/73 (8.2%) laparotomy group vs. 2/60 (3.3%) laparoscopy group (P = 0.238)] or in the disease-free survival during at least 5-year follow-up (P = 0.180). \u0000Conclusion: No statistically significant difference was found in oncological outcomes during a 5-year follow-up of women with early-stage endometrial cancer treated using laparotomy or laparoscopy. This finding was an important retrospective overview, but future prospective randomized trials should validate this. The clinical presentation develops in 10%–20% of their children. This study aimed to present a case of a newborn with transient myasthenia gravis (MG) born to a mother diagnosed with MG. \u0000Case presentation: The disease manifested itself as generalized hypotonia, weak cry, respiratory distress, poor sucking, and facial diplegia. The symptoms were usually self-limiting, and transient supportive treatment was required. A diagnostic test was a good clinical response of the child to the administration of an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. After the clearance of antibodies from the child's blood, long-term therapy was not necessary and the disease resolved. Treatment was supportive and included the administration of smaller and more frequent meals via a tube, noninvasive or invasive support of respiratory function, and use of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (neostigmine and pyridostigmine). \u0000Conclusion: Pediatric patients diagnosed with transient NMG are extremely rare in everyday clinical practice, and hence it is important to be familiar with it.","PeriodicalId":186880,"journal":{"name":"Acta Medico-Biotechnica","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123217264","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Alpha cells play a significant role in glucose homeostasis due to their communication with other cells within the islets of Langerhans and tissues like the liver through glucagon action. Although a concise model of their physiology is still lacking, new approaches provide more insight into the pathways of glucagon secretion and processes regulating it, which gives insight into alpha cell function in health and disease, with potential implications for type 2 diabetes management.","PeriodicalId":186880,"journal":{"name":"Acta Medico-Biotechnica","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125001381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Guidelines have recommended transfemoral transcutaneous aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for a wider patient population, because of technical improvements and increased experience among physicians. Peripheral artery disease often accompanies aortic stenosis and is an important contraindication for transfemoral TAVI. Currently, new access sites for TAVI are used in cases with high surgical risk. We performed the first two axillary TAVI procedures at our institution. Nowadays, various wound dressings are developed containing different active ingredients, often drugs from different pharmacodynamic groups. Considering the variable and changing environment in each wound type, it is important that the experimental design for evaluating the in vitro drug release of such materials takes into account these different conditions. \u0000Methods: For this purpose, Franz diffusion cells for in vitro drug release testing are the method of choice, as they are not only able to simulate different conditions during wound healing but also allow for a certain degree of possible changes in the experimental design (e.g., diffusion cell size). \u0000Results: In this study, we aimed to compare two Franz diffusion cells with different volumes of receptor medium to evaluate naproxen release from an alginate-based model wound dressing. We confirmed that the volume of the receptor medium not only affects the amount of drug released in the selected time but also significantly influences the release mechanism. \u0000Conclusion: The different volumes of the Franz diffusion cell receptor compartments allow the simulation of wounds with a higher and a lower degree of exudation. The experimental design for in vitro drug release testing based on Franz diffusion cells must be based on a thorough consideration of the targeted wound type for which the dressings are being developed.","PeriodicalId":186880,"journal":{"name":"Acta Medico-Biotechnica","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126272540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
