The primary purpose of this CPS display is to inform pedestrians of the remaining time for crossing a road controlled by the signal, to discourage them from starting, and to inform those who are already on the way of the remaining time before the beginning of the DON'T WALK (DW) interval. The general literature on CPS is conclusive that CPS is better understood than the conventional pedestrian signals. In the District of Columbia the CPS display starts at the onset of the Steady WALK (SW) interval and continues through the FDW interval. It is not certain whether this CPS display has any advantage over the standard display as prescribed by the MUTCD. In this research a comparative field study of both types of countdown displays at twenty-five (25) intersections in the District of Columbia was conducted. The results of the evaluation showed that at the majority of the intersections studied, there were no statistically significant differences in pedestrian crossing behaviors (using 5% significance level) due to the type of CPS display.","PeriodicalId":186596,"journal":{"name":"2011 14th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC)","volume":"384 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116006635","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An effective simulation must elicit the same responses from drivers as a real car. Several factors contribute to this realism including a good physics engine, a realistic environment, and expected behavior from simulated traffic and drivers. In this paper, we present a novel method of generating a wide variety of realistic roads called Layered Semi-Markov Model. These roads are tested on five drivers with a driver distraction detection experiment. The results of this experiment matched the expected behavior and subjective feedback showed a favorable response.","PeriodicalId":186596,"journal":{"name":"2011 14th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC)","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116491063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Traffic speed forecasting by mixture of experts","authors":"Vladimir Coric, Zhuang Wang, S. Vucetic","doi":"10.1109/ITSC.2011.6083118","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ITSC.2011.6083118","url":null,"abstract":"Traffic speed is one of the most important quantities for travel information systems. Accurate speed forecasting can help in trip planning by allowing travelers to avoid the congested routes, either by choosing the alternative routes or by changing the departure time. It is also helpful for traffic monitoring, control, and planning. An important feature of traffic is that it consists of free flow and congested regimes, which have significantly different properties. Training a single traffic speed predictor for both regimes typically results in suboptimal accuracy. To address this problem, a mixture of experts algorithm which consists of two regime-specific linear predictors and a decision tree gating function was developed. A generalized expectation maximization algorithm was used to train the linear predictors and the decision tree. The proposed algorithm was evaluated on a 5-mile stretch of I35 highway in Minneapolis containing 10 single loop detector stations, with prediction horizons ranging from 5 minutes to one hour ahead. Experimental results showed that mixture of experts approach outperforms several popular benchmark approaches.","PeriodicalId":186596,"journal":{"name":"2011 14th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC)","volume":"186 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125840726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An investigation of proportionally fair ramp metering 比例公平匝道计量的研究

{"title":"An investigation of proportionally fair ramp metering","authors":"R. Gibbens, F. Kelly","doi":"10.1109/ITSC.2011.6082812","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ITSC.2011.6082812","url":null,"abstract":"This paper concerns ramp metering which is one important approach to dealing with congestion on motorways. Congestion occurs when demand exceeds available resources and can significantly reduce the capacity of the motorway network at peak times. Reduced capacity results in additional delays, increased environmental pollution and hinders passenger safety. Congestion is observed to cause low but highly volatile speeds resulting in more uncertain journey times (referred to as flow breakdown or stop-and-go behaviour). Ramp metering is intended to control the entry of new flow in such a way as to maintain steady flow on the motorway and to avoid the loss of capacity associated with congestion. The rate of entry of flow is set according to the particular ramp metering strategy. Such strategies have been the subject of much attention in the transport literature. One of the key issues is the trade-off between efficiency and fair use of resources. This is a trade-off that has been considered extensively in the modelling and control of communication networks. This paper adds to recent work on a ramp metering strategy, proportionally fair metering, inspired by rate control mechanisms developed for the Internet. Specifically, we use simulation results to compare proportionally fair metering with a greedy strategy for a linear network with a series of entry points leading towards a single common destination for all the traffic, such as a radial route towards a city centre. Under our modelling assumptions, the greedy strategy is provably optimal for exogenously determined arrival streams of traffic, but it is unfair, in a certain precise sense, between different entry points and may well have perverse and suboptimal consequences if it influences traffic demand. We further consider a network with parallel roads where flows of traffic may have route choice according to the levels of queueing at the individual entry points.","PeriodicalId":186596,"journal":{"name":"2011 14th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125893958","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, advanced driver assistance systems giving support during such maneuvers may be expected to significantly contribute to the goal of road safety. In this paper, a system for actively determining lateral maneuver recommendations is evaluated during an exemplary highway scene. The system is utilizing a unified Bayesian data fusion approach which covers the complete data processing chain including object, situation, and impact assessment. The schemes presented here is based on an extensive study of flow patterns that were collected from a densely used ring road of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The new prediction approach proposed here is based on a multiphase information extraction whose ultimate goal is to forecast traffic states at the boundary points of a network. With its simple architecture that makes the proposed approach of interest of practical application, a significant improvement is achieved in comparison with existing models. In its general form, the proposed approach could handle the curse of dimensionality, a common problem associated with the number of dimensions of input space.","PeriodicalId":186596,"journal":{"name":"2011 14th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129971540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the presented approach extends the configuration space with a time component. Based on an A∗ algorithm, it calculates collision free paths of multiple robots. Moreover, it is capable of replanning the path in dynamic environments without doing an iterated A∗ path planning from scratch. The correctness of the approach is proven, and experiments show the achieved improvement in computation time compared to an iterated path planning from scratch. A lattice type state space representation based on short motion sequences is applied to the approach, resulting in more realistic and traversable trajectories for vehicles. The feasibility is shown by letting a simulated convoy turn autonomously to the opposite direction.","PeriodicalId":186596,"journal":{"name":"2011 14th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130074490","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Occupancy, speed and classification are taken into account, the aim being to improve overall perception of an highly changing unstructured environment. Contrary to classical SLAM algorithms, no requisite is made on the amount of rigidity of the scene, and tracking do not rely on geometrical characteristics. We believe that this could have important applications in the automotive field, both from autonomous vehicle and driver assistance, in some areas difficult to address with current algorithms. This article begins with a general presentation of what we aim to do, along with considerations over traditional occupancy grids limits and their reasons. We will then present our proposition, and detail some of its key aspects, namely update rules and performance consequences. A second part will be more practical, and will begin with a brief presentation of the GPU implementation of the algorithm, before turning to sensor models and some results.","PeriodicalId":186596,"journal":{"name":"2011 14th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126970530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the algorithm does not take on-ramps into account in its current form, while on-ramp traffic may have an impact of the effectiveness of the algorithm. In this paper we extend the theory of SPECIALIST to include on-ramps and ramp metering. The theory of SPECIALIST is formulated in the framework of shock wave theory and it results in a control scheme that describes the propagation of the fronts (boundaries) between the various traffic states, and describes the time and location where the speed limits need to be active. Here we extend this with the traffic states describing the additional flow from an on-ramp (either metered or not), and develop the resulting control schemes. Since the location of the on-ramp relative to the moving jam and to the control scheme can be categorized into four cases, we develop four different control schemes. The developed control schemes can be used to analyze offline traffic data to assess the number of moving jams that can be resolved. Resolvability basically depends on (1) whether the traffic situation (speeds, flows, etc.) is such that a control scheme can be constructed, and (2) whether the control scheme physically fits on the freeway stretch equipped with variable speed limit displays. As an example, we analyze the data of a stretch on the A2 freeway in the Netherlands for various speed limit values and maximum on-ramp flows. The results show that for the number of resolvable moving jams the fact that the on-ramp flows are taken into account is more important than the metered value of the on-ramp flow.","PeriodicalId":186596,"journal":{"name":"2011 14th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133007917","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
