We motivate a holistic approach which equally takes into account top-down strategic considerations and bottom-up evaluation of training needs, seen from an individual or Organisational Unit perspective. The respective subprocesses for Assessment of Training Needs, Training Program Planning and Personnel Development Planning are centered around an ontology-based modelling of (required, and available) competencies in the company, and an ontology-based matching component for skill profiles. The elaborated processes are embedded into a comprehensive framework for integrated design and support of Human Resource Management as currently under work in a Ph.D. thesis realized as action research within the HR department of a big international car manufacturer. The whole landscape of interacting software modules currently under development, shall be supported by a new IT infrastructure built around a so-called HR Data Warehouse which integrates all HR related information from existing dispersed software systems.","PeriodicalId":186243,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127390052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To establish a network cooperation between these partners there is a need for a flexible product data structure through which work packages containing design tasks can be exchanged. For this exchange a suitable communication structure hosted by a communication platform is needed. This paper describes an approach for the exchange of product data which integrates a structural view to a shipbuilding project as well as a work package structure represented through XML documents forming a practical product data model. The work packages are formed by predefined data objects representing particular views to the shipbuilding project which are relevant for the individual design task.","PeriodicalId":186243,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130502662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Information system tracing the history is generally referred to Traceability System. Traceability system has gradually obtained much attention, especially on food industries. Since the purpose of the existing traceability system is focused mainly on the consumer service, the system itself is generally independent of main management system and, therefore, the obtained traceability information may not be a contributing factor to the solution of production and distribution management problems. In this paper, we propose a three-layered traceability system, which consists of Application Service Provider, ASP, layer, Enterprise Resource Planning, ERP, layer and Physical logistics layer. Partner overlapping engineering teams have to be organized, common data and processes have to be managed, an integration of a heterogeneous system landscape across the networked companies has to be supported. The one system strategy forced in the last years from a lot of OEMs will not work any more. This requires building up a Collaborative Engineering Environment across company and system borders along the whole product life cycle. IT is important to do this in a standardized way. The OMG PLM Services provide the first definition of an international standard that is able to establish a basis for integrating and managing this heterogeneous partner overlapping system landscape on a standardized way. Based on the Model Driven Architecture (MDA) approach, it defines services for the management of product structure and documents including positioning information for geometric models, for classification and description of configuration and change management and for process planning. Thus, PLM Services enable real collaboration within worldwide distributed engineering based on Web Services.","PeriodicalId":186243,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128511289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each day on a typical construction site brings forth a new problem for which where possible, a new solution is devised on the site. This is rarely, if at all documented. In simple terms, valuable knowledge and experience gained is lost. What remains is stored in the minds of those who were a part of the problem and the solution. The most appropriate means of capturing this knowledge has been identified to be through a set of well defined “social processes” such as action evaluations, internal interest groups, etc. A set of critical “intervention points” were identified where these social processes would be triggered. Recent experience from YIT Construction Ltd. reveals that social processes form an effective means for the capture of experience and knowledge in project based businesses such as construction.","PeriodicalId":186243,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134478391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The globalization, the continuous reduction of the product life cycles and the awareness of environmental aspects are interesting the SMEs more and more, pushing towards radical redesign of their structure and boundaries. On one side, the internal process optimization is not sufficient anymore to preserve the competitive advantages, since the competitive challenge is becoming more and more an “extended challenge”, moving from the field of single companies to that of networks of companies, composed by a multitude of collaborative partners which collaborate under a number of different business paradigms (B2B networks, Virtual Enterprise, etc.). On the other side, more and more agility, flexibility and reconfigurability capabilities in the short time are needed to manufacture extended products as well as manage more and more complex business networks. The knowledge support, the consideration of the all product life cycle (from preliminary design to reutilization and disposal), the analysis of the network as a whole and the optimization of each link, should be the main priorities of modern companies. The methodology proposed in this paper starts from these assumptions and dwells on the need of identifying the critical relationships of a basic Customer/Supplier (C/S) interaction, with an exhaustive and objective method, so to be applied independently of the modality as well as the complexity of the business collaboration. Awareness of critical relationships is indispensable to identify a complete set of Performance Indicators (PIs) and the right corrective actions for the improvement and control of a complex business network.","PeriodicalId":186243,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133414604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper reviews the relevance of the topic for ICE, which generally advances knowledge on the collaboration of engineers across functional boundaries inside the organization or across organizations. The paper reviews the achieved research results in this domain, which are reported in 73 papers at the ICE conference since 1999 and that cover three main topics tools & technology, methods, and working or organising principles. The review shows that collaboration systems research advanced in the community first, as moving from modular technology to encompassing systems, second as moving from predominantly describing tools to the main focus on the methods and the processes that they support. The third and most recent trend is to understanding the rational for collaboration systems as increasing engineering productivity. The track title collaboration systems points to the available body of system knowledge of the interrelationship of technologies and tools, methods and processes, and principles and rationale. This year's papers are in line with the trend. The ICE community has experience in systems research methodologies and a track record in developing collaboration gaming and simulation systems, which can be a valuable contribution to emerging systems research approaches like “living laboratories”. The paper concludes with suggestions for future research directions.","PeriodicalId":186243,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132976918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Distributed production emphasises human influenced complex networks as well as planning and execution of processes in networks. Network properties or network abilities become crucial issues, while the available design approaches in production, mostly based on systems theories, have not been transferred into the domain of networks. The paper intends to contribute to the production systems theory's extension to the field of networks, motivated by mathematical systems theory and topology. Derived sets of models in total cover relevant aspects and/or sub-problems constituting model systems. The relations within the model systems link the different planning aspects and sub-problems for concurrent and distributed solution design, turning sequential procedures into planning processes, verifiable by VR planning.","PeriodicalId":186243,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128458321","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
