This was manifested by the way they were able to identify, understand and contrive possible explanations of their context specific problems through the language and insight provided by the six complexity principles. These results show that the knowledge transformation process initiated through interdependent learning about the 6 complexity science principles had a significant impact for case companies in terms of improving and increasing their problem solving capabilities.","PeriodicalId":186243,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123296138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many nations have made substantial investments aimed at developing and retaining world-class aerospace design and manufacturing capabilities; if these resources are to be deployed to best effect, the aerospace industry needs a means of understanding, describing and analysing the future business environment, in order to formulate strategies that minimise risks. To address this need, the VIVACE (Value Improvement through a Virtual Aeronautical Collaborative Enterprise) programme, funded under the European Union's 6th Framework scheme, includes a work package that addresses business case modelling for the extended enterprise. The partnership for this task includes the University of Nottingham, Rolls-Royce and Volvo Aero Corporation. Based upon research conducted within the partnership, and taking into account supplier and customer needs at various stages in the supply network and the after-market sector, this paper presents a methodology to support and promote strategic thinking in the aerospace business environment, from a broad range of perspectives.","PeriodicalId":186243,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123844869","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research considers the challenges of developing strategic partnerships. This paper discusses the preliminary results of one case study conducted in a multi-case research project of leading collaboration in networked business. The research material of the study consists of interviews and other documented material of a new product development collaboration relationship between a Western and an Asian company. The focus is on people's experiences and perceptions on collaboration from the viewpoints of communication, knowledge sharing, trust and learning in multicultural relationship. The results show that successful relationship building requires clearly defined objectives for the collaboration, strong management commitment on both sides, transparency in processes and strong emphasis on direct communication relations and genuine willingness of mutual learning.","PeriodicalId":186243,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116257135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The possibilities and characteristics of communication such as face-to-face, telephone, or more recently e-mail, are strong factors determining processes and organisational structures in product development. As new communication technologies - most notably presence-based real-time communication and rich media conferencing - become increasingly available, we can expect that the organisation and management of product development will change considerably towards more “virtual” and distributed forms. However the principles and routines of virtual collaboration and their embedding in projects and multi-project, multi-company networks are so far ill understood leading to high risks. The paper proposes a layered research framework on routine, project and network level to support the development of a systematic body of knowledge for organising and leading concurrent product development utilising the new communication technologies. It understands managing product development as interdependent and dynamic system of organisational setup, working/management methods, and technology usage. Research methodologies must be adapted to the context and newness of the ICT. We propose using business experiments in a Living Lab setting as complementary research approach.","PeriodicalId":186243,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114466560","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, this question cannot be easily answered due to lack of methodical support. Conventional methods for the determination of the optimal degree of performance are not suitable for the assessment of contracting models, because these do not map the changes related to the contracting models. Consequently, there is an urgent need for action in determining the real potential of contracting models in workshops. For this reason, an assessment methodology is introduced in this paper for the comparison of contracting models and classical acquisition types, such as the in-plant production and external procurement. Thus, the assessment methodology supports the benchmarking of the available acquisition types and enables in individual cases to make well founded decisions for or against the use of contracting models.","PeriodicalId":186243,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125486556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has been accomplished through the development of flexible collaborative systems that support asymmetrical collaborative situations as well as symmetrical ones, for instance interaction between teams operating in a collaborative arena and one or more individuals using desktop-based systems. The Physual Designing Network provides a set of tools that increase the flexibility and level of interactivity, as well as increasing the feeling of presence, trust and control in complex, dispersed teams. The Physual Designing Network has been tested extensively with up to four locations engaged simultaneously, and a variety of symmetrical and asymmetrical collaborative situations are supported.","PeriodicalId":186243,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"31 6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114114334","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

V-CES is a European Project aiming to develop and deploy a set of services to the Cost Engineering Community: Training, a Cost Engineering Virtual Community, a Cost Estimating Tool, and a Cost Engineering Database. The access to such services will be done via Internet and a Web browser. This implies the possibility for the cost professionals of exercising a just-in time training, estimating and consulting related to their work. The use of these services implies interactions of the kind client-server and peer-to-peer, and their implementation demands the use of different software technologies, being the main ones: Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), database, multi-agent toolkit, and reasoning engine. A case study of a mass-market car manufacturer was conducted, through interviews, qualitative questionnaires and observation. The study revealed that decision making practices in trade-off situations follow a series of patterns, in the way that decision makers perceive the relative importance of the design targets and the criteria involved in the trade-off. These practices are not formalised and remain implicit in the larger mechanisms of car design and development and often contradict the technical guidelines for making trade-offs that exist in the company. These patterns have been formalised into a framework which explains the rationale of design trade-offs. The paper shows how this framework can be applied to the analysis of design trade-offs in a general design organisation and discusses its importance for practitioner designers and design researchers.","PeriodicalId":186243,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133186925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Much has been written about the structural characteristics and propositions of virtual organisations, but their inherent limitations remain largely unaddressed. Hence, there is a significant gap between the propositions in the literature and the number of successful VO examples in practice. We argue for a more realistic view of the VO, its goals, structural propositions, limitations and challenges. VO are flexible and volatile organisational arrangements with only little formal structures and management mechanisms. While this is a promising proposition on an organisational level, it challenges cooperation on the project and team level. Especially complex and innovative tasks need effective social structures to enable interpersonal cooperation in knowledge-intensive tasks. Based on a conceptual analysis of its structure and by applying social capital theory we are able to identify inherent contradictions and challenges of the VO, which result from a mismatch between task requirements on the project level and its characteristics on the organisational level. Organisational virtualisation in terms of inter-firm cooperation and technological virtualisation in terms of intensive usage of ICT challenge the emergence of social capital as a prerequisite for effective team-level collaboration. At the same time social capital can be seen as a solution to the problems of the VO, given that management finds ways to promote its emergence in the VO. We present some ideas of how to facilitate the emergence of social capital in the VO.","PeriodicalId":186243,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE International Technology Management Conference (ICE)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121851701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
