The lamp driver is based on the integration of a flyback PFC input stage and a buck-boost inverter stage. The resulting circuit supplies the lamps properly, operating from the mains facility. The main feature of the proposed ballast is that through an adequate integration of the stages, the ballast operates with only one controlled switch. This switch is shared by the active PFC input stage, by the output high-frequency inverter stage as well as by the igniter. The control of the ballast is carried out by adjusting the maximum current through the switch and by fixing the duty ratio. Thus, the resulting output characteristic is suitable for a proper operation of these discharge lamps, including ignition, warm-up stage and steady- state operation. The obtained high frequency square waveforms in the lamp avoid the apparition of acoustic resonances. A complete prototype has been built and tested, and experimental results are shown.","PeriodicalId":178685,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123586753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The developed strategy is based on the Modified Synchronous Reference Frame Controller. The initial structure of the passive filter was chosen to be tuned for the fifth harmonic. The performance of the system is compared with and without the active compensation. The ability of the hybrid topology in changing the resonant frequency is shown. The active hybrid structure is first tuned for the fifth harmonic, further it is electronically re-tuned to the third and finally to the seventh harmonic. Practical results exhibits these tuning changes showing as close as the passive filter can approach the absolutely compensation for a chosen frequency. The algorithm of the HASPF is executed in the DSP TMS320F2812 and the inverter switching frequency is 20 kHz.","PeriodicalId":178685,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"408 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114003758","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Deficiencies in design, affect all aspects of data center maintenance and operation and are increasingly more expensive to correct. Consequently, proper and failure-free design concept, has a crucial impact throughout the life of the data center. It is essential that suitable design processes being followed to minimize the possibility of operation failure and allow the design deficiencies being detected before the facility goes to live operation. One of the most important design decisions in any data center is the level of redundancy for its infrastructure systems. It is customary that \"external redundancy\", such as 2N systems, being treated as a superior type of redundancy, however, this may not be true for all systems, and there are cases that embedded redundancy provides greater reliability over redundancy at system level. The objective of this paper is reviewing those cases starting with mathematical proof along with detailed overview and two case studies.","PeriodicalId":178685,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114736289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Low frequency current sub and inter-harmonics generated by cycloconverters are eliminated with an active power filter connected in series to a C type passive filter. Current frequency harmonics associated with cycloconverter topology are eliminated with passive filter units. With the proposed filter topology compensation effectiveness is significantly improved and allows the elimination of passive filter units, reducing cost and space required as compared with traditional passive schemes. This paper presents the principles of operation and design requirements of the proposed hybrid filter scheme. Simulated results based in the compensation of a real grinding mill plant prove the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed scheme.","PeriodicalId":178685,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"253 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123357350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A tungsten wire in the middle of the porous ceramic tube and a stainless steel mesh outside the ceramic tube attached to the inner wall of the reactor vessel were constructed as discharge electrode and ground electrode, respectively. The porous ceramic tube made gas phase and liquid phase separated. Oxygen, as the gas phase, was bubbled into phenol solution through the porous ceramic tube. The radicals, such as O3, O - , ·O, generated by pulse discharge in the oxygen atmosphere, dissolved in the solution through the pores of the tube and phenol can be degraded by these radicals. The effects of discharge energy, gas bubbling rate, solution conductivity and solution pH on the decomposition efficiency of phenol were investigated. The results showed that increased discharge energy could enhance the decomposition efficiency; the gas bubbling rate and solution conductivity had little effects on the decomposition efficiency of phenol, indicating that the new pulse discharge reactor had good feasibility for the wastewater treatment in a large range of conductivity; the discharge electrode located in oxygen atmosphere could prevent the erosion of the electrode, which was in favor of the industrialization of pulse discharge for treating organic contaminant.","PeriodicalId":178685,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116213369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The loss minimization algorithm is developed based on the motor model. In order to minimize the controllable electrical losses of the motor and thereby maximize the operating efficiency the d-axis armature current is controlled optimally according to the operating speed and load conditions. For vector control purpose, a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is used as a speed controller which enables the utilization of the reluctance torque to achieve high dynamic performance as well as to operate the motor over a wide speed range. In order to test the performance of the proposed drive in real-time, the complete drive is experimentally implemented using DSP board DS1104 for a prototype laboratory 5 hp motor. The performance of the proposed loss minimization based FLC for IPMSM drive is tested in both simulation and experiment at different operating conditions. A performance comparison of the drive with and without the proposed LMA based FLC is also provided. It is found from the results that the proposed LMA and FLC based drive demonstrates higher efficiency and better dynamic responses over FLC based IPMSM drive without LMA.","PeriodicalId":178685,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132018644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Congress responded to these tragedies by enacting the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act), which resulted in the most significant change to mine-safety laws in 30 years. To help meet the requirements of the MINER Act and to help eliminate future tragedies, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health initiated aggressive research programs for developing new, and enhancing existing, mine-safety technologies. A major research emphasis addressed the lack of postaccident communications, which surfaced as a critical deficiency in some disasters. As a result, three communications approaches emerged as viable technologies-enhanced leaky-feeder, wireless-mesh, and medium-frequency systems. This paper describes the operation, application, advantages, and disadvantages of each system, as well as the challenges associated with underground wireless communications.","PeriodicalId":178685,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129272033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To drive two motors (IMs or PMSMs) independently, the system connected one motor to one three-phase voltage source inverter (three-VSI) is generally used and is required two three- VSIs. Therefore, twelve and ten-switching devices are necessary in the three-VSIs and FLI respectively. Finally, the FLI can decrease two-switches and will be expected for saving space and reduction of inverter losses.
