These machines are characterized by cyclic loads consisting of high peak power demands as well as regenerative energy. The regenerated energy is as high as 60 % of the peak motoring power. This regenerated energy can be stored temporarily and then reused. The recent development in the field of ultracapacitors has led to commercial availability of high power ultracapacitor modules rated for reasonably high voltages. The paper proposes the use of ultracapacitors for regenerative energy storage to provide control power source for medium voltage gas insulated switchgear. Energy calculation and design of the ultracapacitor system into the existing converter system is presented.","PeriodicalId":178685,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129360580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such a power demand from the shore-to-ship requires multiple parallel feeds at medium voltage to match with the ship’s connection point voltage. The cruise ship authority required installation of a neutral grounding disconnect switch (DS) and insulated ground conductor (IG) at the shore power transformer neutral grounding resistor (NGR) such that during cold ironing the DS will be opened to complete the shore-side, line-to-ground fault current path through the equipment grounding conductor to reach the ship hull first before it returns to the transformer neutral via IG and NGR. Such an installation of the DS appears to violate National Electrical Code (NEC) [1] requirements of a power system grounding. For clarification of this issue, this paper provide example of a ground fault at the shore and a ground fault at the ship using DS and IG in the system. The need to know the ship’s on-board homo-polar grounding-equipment ratings and the ship’s system-charging current in designing shore-power-system grounding is discussed. This paper will provide input for the present IEEE and IEC draft standards on Cold Ironing [2] [12]. In this paper, the performance of SOI devices and circuits were evaluated under extreme temperatures and thermal cycling. Two oscillator circuits were constructed using a new SOI 555 timer chip and used as temperature sensors in harsh environments encompassing jet engines and space mission applications. The circuits, were evaluated between -190degC and +200degC. The output of each circuit produced a stream of square pulses whose frequency was a function of the sensed temperature. The results indicate that both circuits performed relatively well over the entire test temperature range. In addition, the performance of either circuit did not undergo any change after subjecting the circuits to limited thermal cycling over the temperature regime of -190degC and +200degC, and the circuits were able to cold start at -195degC.","PeriodicalId":178685,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123671523","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the present time, in addition, the emerging energy crisis resulting from an uncertainty price of crude-oil and the emerging global warming crisis results from carbon dioxide emission have drawn an attention about renewable energy all over the world including Thailand (1-2). One of the most effective solutions for Thailand is to promote the renewable energy usage in the rural area especially from solar energy and wind generation system. However, with the fast growing in wind power technologies, many concerns and focuses pay to this type of renewable energy in the country. Unfortunately, Thailand is considered as a country of low to medium wind speed profile with approximately wind capacity factor close to 30 percent. Therefore, in order to obtain the most efficient and effective wind generation system for rural household usage, the optimal design for a household scale wind generation should be governmentally supported and implemented. This paper, therefore, addresses to this issue and study result shows that the optimal scale of household wind generation system is 5 kW. with a proposed cut-in speed at 2.5 m/s while the suggested rated power at wind speed of 8 m/s. This proposed wind generation system can offer an Optimal Annual Capacity Factor (OACF) close to 30 percent.","PeriodicalId":178685,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125929659","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Readability of the TFT-LCD with backlight of white LED matrices was highest among the others from the viewpoint of flicker and luminance unevenness. The efficiency of VDT operations contiguously carried out for up to 90 minutes for the TFT-LCD with backlight of white LED matrices was higher than the other two types of displays by a factor of 10 to 20 %, since the readability for up to 30 minutes was greatly improved by TFT-LCD with backlight of white LED matrices. This paper presents the theory, simulation, and lab results of a new type of fully magnetically levitated bearingless motor. The motors are wound without internally connecting the pole pairs, and force is controlled by varying rotor reference frame d-axis current to each pole pair. This in turn raises or lowers the flux caused by the permanent magnets, creating a flux imbalance on the periphery of the rotor [1], which in turn creates a net force on the rotor. The conical shape of the motor allows forces to be created in both radial and axial directions, allowing these motors full 5-axis levitation. The feed-forward controller compensates interference phenomenon generated by switching converter in parallel. As the secondary leakage inductance in transformer is changed by operating conditions of the trans- former, the gain value of feed-forward controller is calculated by estimating the changed leakage inductance. The estimation procedure of the boost inductance is only based on the variation of input current and the input AC voltage measurement. The estimated boost inductance is optimized by the least square method. Then the controller with gain value can exactly compensate the interference phenomenon. The validity of proposed technique is verified through the MATLAB Simulink simulation results.","PeriodicalId":178685,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121104351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
