The author of the article observes the peculiarities of her relations with modernist writers and her literary position, expressed largely in opposition to modernists. Despite the fact that nowadays Chyumina is almost forgotten, at the turn of the 20th century she was a famous writer who achieved both the attention of critics and high fees. The article examines the beginning of her creative career, the relationship with the critic V.P. Burenin, the first publications dedicated to the memory of General M.D. Skobelev. The author quotes from letters stored in archives, in which Chyumina writes about herself and subjects the role and place of women in literature to reflection. Chyumina wrote from a male person before women writers of the modern era began to resort to this technique. Critics have noted this feature, at the same time in the reviews she was advised not to raise serious topics, which corresponds to the traditional attitude towards women writers. Goncharov’s service activity in the Foreign Trade Department of the Ministry of Finance as an official, but not as a translator and a secretary of Admiral E.V. Putyatin aboard the frigate Pallada. The time period is from May 1835 to November 1838, from 1843 to October 1852 and from the spring of 1855 to early 1856, when Goncharov took the post of censor. The character of Goncharov's service in 1843 –1845 is emphasized. The author investigates the case of the Foreign Trade Department on the construction of furniture in 1846 –1849, in which, in addition to the already known list of documents (for depositing in the archives), compiled and signed by Goncharov, his notes on separate sheets were revealed. The documents allow to make a reasonable conclusion that Goncharov, in addition to his official duties as a translator, participated in other affairs of the department. It is possible that, at the request of his superiors, he sometimes performed some errands when his colleagues were on vacation. But his officially undisclosed return to the duties of a clerical worker on a permanent basis is also possible. {"title":"“Let it be Empty”: “The Curse of Eudokia” and its Reception in Russian Culture of the 19th – Early 20th Centuries.","authors":"","doi":"10.22455/2541-8297-2023-27-173-194","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.22455/2541-8297-2023-27-173-194","url":null,"abstract":"Since the beginning of the 20th century, the leitmotif of the theme of the end of St. Petersburg is the so-called “curse of Evdokia”: “Petersburg to be empty.” This is a contamination of two quotes from the Petrine era. Both of them, when they appeared, did not have any distinct eschatological sound, and both were not known in the era of romanticism. From the 1860s to the beginning of the 20th century the prophecy “Let it be empty” was cited as a formula of the retrograde of the reign of Peter the Great, moreover as a prediction or threat, but not a curse. Actual eschatological sound was given to him by Merezhkovsky in the novels “Peter and Alexei” (1904–1905), “Alexander I” (1911–1912) and the article “Petersburg to be empty” (1908). The formula “St. Petersburg to be empty” entered the political agenda on the eve and after the February Revolution, in connection with rumors about the surrender of Petrograd to the Germans and the government moving to Moscow. Afterwards the 19th centuries prophecies were perceived by the eyes of the creators of the Russian symbolism. Gippius’s formation as a prose writer. Her position in literature was ambivalent: she published her prose in “thick” magazines, was a friend of some old generation writers and at the same time was associated with decadence and new directions in literature. It was important for her to get support of respectable writers and at the same time she criticized their outdated positivistic world perception from her modernist point of view. She also published her prose in thin illustrated magazines just to provide the Merezhkovskys’ financial position. All of these items are reflected in her letters of this period and as well in her prose, in which she represented various types of writers and showed her attitude to them. Gogol’s story “The Old World Landowners” — the earliest edition of the text — for the first time. This is the only handwritten source, which is different mainly stylistically from the printed version of “Mirgorod” (1835). At the same time, numerous amendments, corrections and additions made in the process of text transformation clearly demonstrate the nature of Gogol's work. The memoirs of E.A. Gilyarova represent one of the most interesting periods of the Soviet press, i. e. the 1930s. The introductory article to the publication examines the significance of the censors’ memoirs for the history of literature. A brief biographical note is given about Gilyarova, who, being a prominent Bolshevik, an employee of the People’s Commissariat of Education, was repressed in the 1930s. Subsequently, she contributed to the study of the Bolshevik movement’s history by publishing her memoirs and compiling several collections about the participants of the Revolution and the Civil War. In the being publishing memoirs, Gilyarova describes the internal routine of work in Gorlit, (the General Directorate for Literature and Publishing which carried out censorship in USSR), direct interactions with writers. The above episode with the B.A. Lavrenev’novel “The World in a Piece of Glass” shows how censorship changed the text: subsequently it was reproduced without the final author’s conclusion. Also, Gilyarova remembers how she took off an obscene poem from Nekrasov’s poetry collection. In the narrative about her work at the GIHL, Gilyarova pays the greatest attention to the figure of K.I. Chukovsky. She describes the editorial work on his book about N.A. Nekrasov, tells about the prohibition of Chukovsky’s works at the turn of the 1920s — 1930s. It studies five poems that present different images of Calvary. Analyzing A.S. Pushkin’s “Worldly power” we discover a lexical connection of the poem to prayers and liturgical texts. The poem “When rowan leaves are dank and rusting…” by A.A. Blok requires consideration from two angles: among his other Christological poems and in the light of a general among symbologists tendency of eroticizing Christian images. We demonstrate that the subject of co-crucifixion is natural for Blok, that it was slowly emerging in his lyric poetry of the 1900s. The article analyzes O.E. Mandelstam’s poem “The implacable words…” in the context of his lyric poetry of the 1910s, as well as in comparison to the later variation of the image (“Like chiaroscuro’s martyr Rembrandt…”). The research reveals “maternal projection” of the subject of Calvary on the example of the poem “Mother” by V.V. Nabokov, passages from A.A. Akhmatova’s poem \"Requiem” and I.A. Gogol and M.A. Maksimovich (1804–1873), his fellow countryman from the Poltava region. In his family there were writers and professors, they were proud of it, and Maksimovich himself from childhood dreamed of becoming a professor of botany in Moscow, but became a professor of Russian literature in Kiev and as a philologist and historian lived a fruitful scientific life. With Gogol he was brought together by his love for Little Russian songs. For the famous collection of songs by Maksimovich, Gogol offered several of his recordings and took part in its publication. Both were enthusiastic about the unrealized project to occupy university departments in Kiev together and turn it into a “new Athens,” launching an extensive educational program there. Their relations, invariably warm, were almost in absentia, until the autumn of 1849, when at the end of October Maksimovich arrived in Moscow, where Gogol then lived, and remained there for more than six months. In June they went together to their native lands, and in August 1850 Maksimovich visited Gogol in his village of Vasilyevka. Lozinsky, Maria Nikitichna Ryzhkina (married Petersen; 1998–1984), the first translator of M. Proust’s novel Towards Swann. Special attention is paid to her activities in the publishing house “World Literature” (“Vsemirnaya Literatura”), where she is under her own name and under the pseudonym “M. Elagina” published, in addition to excerpts from M. Proust’s novel Towards Swann, the novels of R. Rolland Cola Brunion, The Enchanted Soul, A. Bero The Sufferings of a Fat Man and M. Marx The Woman, collections of short stories The Man is Kind by L. Frank and Timur by K. Edschmid, plays by G. Buchner The Death of Danton and Woyzeck. The authors of the article examine archival documents from the collections of the Russian National Library: the personal file of M.N. Ryzhkina (Petersen) and her diary (1920–1921); as well as her memoirs written in the 1980s and covering almost the entire life path, from the Archival Collection of the House of the Russian Abroad. The article gives numerous fragments from these sources. The information significantly complements the already known facts (according to other sources) about the work of M.L. Lozinsky’s Translation Studio, about his method of “collective translation,” about the relationship of students. The appendix contains archival documents from the personal file of M.N.
