The relationships between different configuration parameters, including the tilt angle and height of modules, the distance between PV rows, the albedo of ground, and the total available solar radiation energy of the array are studied. A model is first developed for evaluating the total available solar radiation energy of a bifacial PV module, where the front-side irradiance of the module is calculated based on the Perez diffuse model, and the backside irradiance of the module is estimated based on the AOI (angle of incidence) correction factors. The effects of the configuration parameters on the solar radiation energy incident on the modules are investigated in detail. Based on the developed model, an optimal set of configuration parameters can be obtained for a given array in any location to achieve maximum energy generation.","PeriodicalId":175719,"journal":{"name":"2019 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125846086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, designing these compensators is not a straightforward task. Alternatively, a control scheme elaborated in dq reference frame offers the possibility to track dc control signals. It also allows the design of compensators with simpler structures and low dynamic orders. The purpose of this work is to propose a control scheme in the dq reference frame for Hexverter-based systems. Considering the Hexverter's operating principle and its characteristic waveforms, a frequency decoupled branch current control model in the dq reference frame is synthesized. It can be considered as an extension of the control model developed for the two-level voltage source inverter. A feature of the proposed control is to allow independent regulation of the Hexverter's active and reactive power flows. The former control is then integrated to a modulator and a voltage balancing algorithm when the Hexverter-based system is functioning as an intertie. The effectiveness of the characterized system is validated via a detailed PSCAD/EMTDC computer simulation.","PeriodicalId":175719,"journal":{"name":"2019 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126685320","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the maximum loading condition the cost of power is high, hence conservation voltage reduction (CVR) is a useful technique in reducing power demand of the distribution system. Further, by installing battery energy storage system (BESS) in the distribution system, power can be stored in the BESS when the price is low and can be utilize to supply the demand when the price is high. In this paper, power conserving and cost saving problems are investigated. As we consider loads in distribution system as voltage dependent loads, the CVR objective is obtained by optimizing the nodal voltages of a feeder towards the lower limit of the ANSI value using legacy devices and smart inverter. In order to solve introduced problems, a MPC-based algorithm is proposed for optimal usage of future information prediction such as load energy consumption profile, PVs generation profiles and TOU electricity tariffs. Moreover, effect of depreciation cost of the BESS is in cost saving is investigated. The proposed method is validated using IEEE-123 node system. It is demonstrated form the results that the proposed method is able to reduce the power consumption and cost of purchased power from substation.","PeriodicalId":175719,"journal":{"name":"2019 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129121806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The charging and vehicle-to-building dispatch of the electric school buses were optimized to evaluate the potential to reduce the impact of the bus charging on the school's electric utility bill. Distributed energy resources and flexible building loads were also considered with the school bus electrification to evaluate the further reductions in energy costs with enhanced systems integration and optimized dispatch. The effect of degradation on the school bus batteries was analyzed to determine if the smart-charging and vehicle-to-building battery operation decreases the life of the battery. The results show that there is an opportunity to mitigate the increase in electric utility bill with improved charging controls and bi-directionally operating the school bus batteries. The battery degradation analysis using dispatch with optimized charging and discharging shows that acceptable battery life remains.","PeriodicalId":175719,"journal":{"name":"2019 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"107 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132402426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result, the ramp rate constraints of generators are binding more often than before. Ramp rate constraints cause uplift in some market designs, which distorts the price signal. This paper studies the relationship between ramp rate constraints and uplift from two aspects: market design and the convexity of ramp rate constraints. The market designs compared are real-time market with single-period model and price clearing, multi-interval realtime market (MIRTM) with only the first interval financially binding, and MIRTM with all intervals financially binding. Using a simplified multi-interval economic dispatch model, it was proved that with the last market design, constant ramp rates neither cause lost opportunity cost nor make-whole payments. It was shown that dispatch-dependent ramp rates could cause uplift with a numerical example.","PeriodicalId":175719,"journal":{"name":"2019 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132630044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In recent years, load growth in developed countries has not been at high levels, and the utilization of some renewable generation resources have exacerbated this issue. In this paper, a new market for large scale seawater desalination is proposed and discussed. The main elements of the discussion center on power system load factor improvement, the improvement of net present value, and also the coordination of desalination activity with system unit commitment. As a background, added water resources are noted as an important worldwide priority. The focus is on reverse osmosis as the desalination method.","PeriodicalId":175719,"journal":{"name":"2019 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116572646","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Line outages may also result in voltage instabilities which may finally lead to partial or complete blackout in the grid. Modification in the bus connection reduces the system loss and improves the bus voltages as well. Major intricacy for reconfiguring distribution system lies in the development of a convex optimization model constituting voltage-dependent loads. This paper models mixed integer second order conic program for Network Reconfiguration of a Distribution System (NRDS), where binary variables depict the branch connections between the buses. A ZIP load model composed of constant impedance, constant current, and constant power type loads, has been deployed for voltage-dependent load study. Proposed ZIP load model based NRDS has been tested on 33-bus, and 69-bus distribution system. Results are compared with the existing model given in literature incorporating only constant power loads that establishes the case for adaptation of the proposed model. Simulated results of constant power and voltage-dependent load model are also validated by performing load flow for evaluated branch connections.","PeriodicalId":175719,"journal":{"name":"2019 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"131 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131685602","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes a new impedance-based fault location algorithm using sparse voltage measurements to identify the location of a fault. Depending on the availability of source currents at substations and distributed generations (DG), the algorithm has three variants. It is assumed that the network topology and parameters are known. Information of fault types, fault resistances, source impedances, and prefault measurements is not needed to determine the fault location. The proposed algorithm is validated by evaluation studies performed on the modified IEEE 34 Node Test Feeder with over 45% DG penetration.","PeriodicalId":175719,"journal":{"name":"2019 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134316832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since microgrids consist of distributed generators, it is imperative for these generators to communicate seamlessly with each other without any losses and to ensure secure operation of the microgrid. With the use of distributed generators, noise is inherent in the system. This paper focuses on including noises as a constraint in an islanded microgrid to find a better economic dispatch solution. It also introduces a STATCOM controller for reactive power management. The controller will help provide stability to the microgrid's voltage, output power and phase angle. This will enhance the microgrid's performance and make it a more resilient system.","PeriodicalId":175719,"journal":{"name":"2019 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132928529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
