The idea is evolved from the universal droop controller that can be applied to inverters considering output impedance. The architecture has two control loops: the primary inverter control topology is based on the d-q frame active and reactive power control and the secondary control generate virtual active and reactive powers references using voltage deviations and power unbalance obtained from the ADMM identified transfer functions. The advantages and capabilities of the architecture is evaluated on IEEE 123-bus system for regulating voltage deviations during load changes and other adverse conditions.","PeriodicalId":175719,"journal":{"name":"2019 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133242998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This will lead to increased interaction of transmission and distribution system operators, as well as the control actions at LV/MV grid in aggregation will have significant impact on the operations of bulk transmission systems. Therefore, lately, there has been some advancements to developing co-simulation platform for solving transmission and distribution (T&D) systems simultaneously for dynamic and power flow type of studies. However, the existing co-simulation platforms base mainly on decoupled approaches. Therefore, a unified approach of solving T&D (for solution benchmarking purpose) is largely missing in the literature. In this context, this paper shows initial results of a decoupled method applied for solving T&D power flow co-simulation and is benchmarked against a unified solution. The case studies based on augmented 14+33 bus T&D systems show that the decoupled approach is fairly accurate.","PeriodicalId":175719,"journal":{"name":"2019 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122891254","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The synthetic power networks can facilitate power systems research and development by providing thousands of realistic use cases. The location of substations is taken from recent efforts to develop synthetic transmission test cases, with underlying real and reactive power in the distribution network assigned using population information gathered from United States 2010 Census block data. The methods illustrate how to create individual synthetic distribution feeders, and groups of feeders across entire ZIP Code, with minimal input data for any location in the United States. The framework also has the capability to output data in OpenDSS format to allow further simulation and analysis.","PeriodicalId":175719,"journal":{"name":"2019 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122913576","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently, a common industry practice for preventive operation is to turn on all the units in a system during extreme weather. In this study, a preventive unit commitment (UC) model is presented to reduce transmission-induced outages during hurricanes. In this model, transmission contingency scenarios are generated based on wind speed, and then these scenarios are used in a stochastic UC model to obtain UC results with a goal of reducing outages in the system. The presented preventive operations method is compared with the business-as-usual model and the turn-on-all-units method, and results show that the presented method can reduce outages from the business-as-usual model as effective as the turn-on-all-units method with a much lower operating cost.","PeriodicalId":175719,"journal":{"name":"2019 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121434110","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Driven by the variations of fuels costs, system loads and weathers, these market participants compete actively and behave variously in the power market. Although electricity markets tend to become more transparent, a large amount of market information is still not publicly available to market participants. Hence, data-driven analysis based on public data is crucial for market participants to better understand and model large-scale power markets, and ultimately to perform better in power trading. While most of the previous researches related to the large-scale power markets are based on the synthetic networks, a data-driven approach utilizing the real power market data is proposed in this paper. First, the power plants' monthly net generation and capacity data are obtained from U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) and aggregated to figure out the monthly regional capacity factors which are used to characterize the market's regional behaviors for market participants. Then, the regional capacity factors are analyzed against the metered system loads and natural gas prices to study the generation behaviors in the power market. The analysis reveals the impacts of regional natural gas prices on capacity factors and the responses of generating behaviors to the system loads. The analysis results present the solid evidence and rational references for market participants to model and validate the large-scale power market in the future.","PeriodicalId":175719,"journal":{"name":"2019 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128580392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a proof-of-concept system was built to introduce, motivate and validate the idea of a cable detach mechanism that protects electrical poles by detaching the cables from the pole when excess physical stress is present on the lines. In said event an ad-hoc network is deployed and serves as a means for communications to first responders in the event of cellular tower failures. The benefits of the smart detach cable system include increased grid resiliency, reduced grid recovery time and costs, improved sensing of grid state, and rapid maintenance deployment. The system was built and modeled as a small-scale, one line, power grid. The modeled system demonstrated and confirmed some of the clear benefits of the proposed detach mechanism and communication network.","PeriodicalId":175719,"journal":{"name":"2019 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117085712","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, this paper presents a two-stage Stochastic Programming (SP) optimization technique in order to find the optimal configuration of a hybrid wind-solar grid-connected distribution system. The proposed procedure use time correlated stochastic distribution models for system uncertainties in wind speed, solar radiation, energy market price, and load. The objective function of the optimization problem measures the total annual cost of the system. Various problem constraints are considered as well. A case study for a hybrid wind-PV grid-connected distribution system in North Texas is presented to illustrate the suggested optimization technique. Results of the SP give the optimal size for the wind farm, solar farm, and energy storage needed to meet the load, reliability requirements, and minimize the system annual cost.","PeriodicalId":175719,"journal":{"name":"2019 North American Power Symposium (NAPS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114273956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study is a step towards cyber-physical analysis for grid with HVDC system by analyzing: 1) the cyber system vulnerabilities of the HVDC system, 2) the integrated cyber-physical system model developement with HVDC technology, 3) the effect of cyber-attacks on the HVDC and impact on the dynamic voltage stability of the power system, and 4) the cyber-attack detection and mitigation.
