{"title":"Mākslinieciski eksperimenti ar imaginārām rakstībām","authors":"Gundega Strautmane","doi":"10.37384/sm.2022.14.062","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.37384/sm.2022.14.062","url":null,"abstract":"The main undertaking of this article is to study imaginary writing in the field of visual arts, classify and introduce new terminology, and use the tools of imaginary writing to work with art projects relevant to the new media field. It also aims to inform the public about the existence of artists and their works in the field of imaginary writing and the author’s work and findings in the new media field. The article proposes to introduce new terms in Latvian, kodējummālsla (codification art) and imaginārā rakstība (imaginary writing) on the basis of Albani and Buonarroti’s Classification of Artificial Languages (1994). The text uses these terms to describe new applications of imaginary writing in art. Although linguistic signs are common in contemporary art, authors rarely invent their writing systems. Thus, it emerges as a new field or art genre, and no previous studies or terminology have been devoted to this field. To define the practice, the article’s author proposes a new term, kodējummāksla ‘codification art’. Its relevance and applicability were studied using expert interviews and viewer surveys. The expert interviews gave positive results, and the necessity for a new term was confirmed in most of the cases. The experts have different opinions regarding the question of how many and what practices should be included in the field defined by kodējummāksla. The surveys consisted of questionnaires that teachers from Latvian art schools filled out after attending a lecture on the research subject. The surveys also reflect positive results. Most of the respondents do recognize a need for a new term. The theoretical part of the research consists of a contextual review of literature on imaginary languages and writing and Polish linguist Ida Stria’s work “Inventing languages, inventing worlds. Towards a linguistic worldview for artificial languages” (2016) in particular. Stria focuses on artificial languages and their origins; she also suggests a system for classifying imaginary languages so necessary to the field. The article’s author has reached certain conclusions regarding imaginary languages as a practising artist working with various codes and techniques and developing imaginary alphabets over 20 years. The author has also developed typefaces that cannot be compared to any of the existing designs in use. There is a reference to works created by artists who have created their unique alphabets, including Allyson Gray (b. 1953) and Ryan Gander (b. 1976).","PeriodicalId":173630,"journal":{"name":"Scriptus Manet: humanitāro un mākslas zinātņu žurnāls = Scriptus Manet: Journal of Humanities and Arts","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126734855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Redzamās skaņas – mākslinieciski pētījumi fotoakustikā

{"title":"Redzamās skaņas – mākslinieciski pētījumi fotoakustikā","authors":"Paula Vītola","doi":"10.37384/sm.2022.14.041","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.37384/sm.2022.14.041","url":null,"abstract":"Since 2015, the author of the article has been researching the photoacoustic effect in her artistic work, experimenting, and developing various prototypes and artworks that allow visitors to experience the effect and understand some of its principles. The photoacoustic effect is a process where sound is generated, recorded, or transmitted using photosensitive material. The article describes the author’s creative process, methods, and practical research and draws conclusions about the role of the artistic experience in producing knowledge and informing audiences about the working principles of immaterial energies and invisible processes. The research was inspired by the discovery of the photoacoustic effect by Alexander Graham Bell (1847–1922). In 1880, he invented the photophone, also known as the sun telephone. The invention was met with public criticism, but the nature of the phenomenon inspired Bell, so he continued his research, believing in its potential and possible artistic use. The first experiments by the author on recording sound using light were done using simple and available materials and technology. A simple microphone was built with a mirror and a solar cell to record sounds with the sunlight. The mirror picks up voice and environmental sounds, and the reflected light is modulated accordingly. The research continued with building an interface that enables us to record voice and other sounds on paper visually. The next steps in the practical research concentrated on finding objects or phenomena that can be heard directly rather than using a mirror to pick up environmental sounds. The author discovered that it’s possible to hear the sound of insects moving their wings if their shadow is cast over the solar panel. This discovery was the basis for further research into finding methods of generating and amplifying sounds visually using vibrating strings, various rotating mechanisms, and flickering lights. The author developed instruments, created artworks, and did demonstrations, workshops, and performances that allowed visitors to participate in the process. Instruments were easy to use and allowed participants to understand their working principles in a way that allowed them to experiment and discover new sounds. The instruments and experiments demonstrate peculiarities of our perception – the flickering lights and the shadows of moving objects create the stroboscopic effect. The stroboscopic effect creates the illusion of the light being continuously on by visually slowing down the motion of the objects by dividing them into separate ‘frames’. The photoacoustic effect allows us to hear the connection between the flickering light and the slowed motion. Media art researchers such as Armin Medosch (1962–2017) and Douglas Kahn (b. 1951) and others have analysed artworks that use electricity, electromagnetic waves, and other forms of energy that allow visitors to experience their presence and working principles. Khan refers to this type o","PeriodicalId":173630,"journal":{"name":"Scriptus Manet: humanitāro un mākslas zinātņu žurnāls = Scriptus Manet: Journal of Humanities and Arts","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131222878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose, the article’s author created a survey and asked users of various social networks (Twitter.com, Facebook.com, Draugiem.lv) to participate from February 1st to 9th, 2022. The questionnaire was filled by 419 respondents, of whom 305 were women, and 114 were men. The respondents were Latvians living in Latvia or abroad. The respondents had to evaluate 15 different concepts to assess whether the connotation (a feeling or idea that is suggested by a particular word, although it need not be a part of the word’s meaning, or something suggested by an object or situation) of their messages was positive, neutral, negative or difficult to determine. The article looks at 8 of the 15 presented concepts: žīds, ebrejs, nēģeris, melnādainais, čigāns, roms, krievs, krievvalodīgais. The object of research is the data obtained in the questionnaire. The method of data analysis used is quantitative content analysis. Although nowadays, Latvian linguists have indicated that the term nēģeris does not have a negative connotation, half of the respondents believe that this term has a negative message. Even though the term žīds has not had a negative connotation in the past, 71 % of respondents indicated that it has a negative connotation.","PeriodicalId":173630,"journal":{"name":"Scriptus Manet: humanitāro un mākslas zinātņu žurnāls = Scriptus Manet: Journal of Humanities and Arts","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132675227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result, theoreticians are facing various challenges. There is a lack of unified terminology, classification, and the attempts to define the field result in either over-generalisation or, quite the contrary, they focus on certain aspects that are not common to all forms of digital literature or digital poetry. The boundaries between digital literature, cinema, art, video games etc., are rather blurred as well; thus, the aim of this article is to 1) provide a comprehensive overview of the attempts to define digital literature and digital poetry by established theoreticians and the consequent arguments opposing these attempts; 2) analyse the various systems of the classification of digital poetry in order to arrive to a model that would incorporate the seemingly complementary approaches. The work consists of theoretical literature analysis referring to Giovanna Di Rosario, Noah Wardrip-Fruin, Roberto Simanowski, Astrid Ensslin, Katherine N. Hayles, Espen Aarseth, Scott Rottberg, Alvaro Seica, Mirona Magearu et al. As a result, the analysis of the classification of digital poetry introduced by Di Rosario leads to a realisation of certain deficiencies, which are resolved by integrating the model within the relatively widespread approach (hypertext; hypermedia / visual / kinetic poetry; ciberpoetry / computer generated poetry / programmable media poetry), which lack Di Rosario’s categories of digital poetry – time and interaction.","PeriodicalId":173630,"journal":{"name":"Scriptus Manet: humanitāro un mākslas zinātņu žurnāls = Scriptus Manet: Journal of Humanities and Arts","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131516188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, within the framework of the study, lexicographers and publishing representatives were interviewed – the editor Ieva Jansone (Zinātne Publishing House), the editor-in-chief Inta Kalniņa (Avots Publishing House), the chairman of the Terminology Commission of the Latvian Academy of Sciences and director of State Language Centre, Māris Baltiņš. The aim of the article is not only to highlight the main problems of Latvian terminography today (founded on the knowledge of publishers and editors with several years of experience in the field) and their possible solutions but also to shed light on the further development of the field. The opinions of publishers and terminologists were juxtaposed with the results of an online survey conducted among students regarding the use of dictionaries and their views on current issues in contemporary terminography. The article presents the main challenges of contemporary Latvian terminology and terminography: lack of financial resources; time-consuming work in creating a terminological dictionary; incomplete understanding of the status of the Terminology Commission of the Latvian Academy of Sciences; prevailing method of taking the term directly from a foreign language; development of specialised terminology is not recognised as a scientific work; publication of dictionaries not approved by the Terminology Commission; the future of printed dictionaries and their competitiveness with electronic resources. Lexicographers and publishers confirm that, for the existence and development of Latvian terminography, fundamental changes should be made related to financial funding, the role of the Terminology Commission, and the recognition of terminology development as scientific work. Despite the shortcomings of electronic terminological resources, online accessibility and convenience seem to outweigh dictionary users’ concerns about the reliability and quality of the source. Therefore, the importance of the Latvian National Terminology Portal, established with a status of national importance, to make the latest official terminology easily accessible and usable by everyone is crucial. Although some fundamental current problems in Latvian terminography require significant changes, moving towards a solution will ensure the development of the field, its research, the development of new terminological resources, and public access to the latest specialised terminology.","PeriodicalId":173630,"journal":{"name":"Scriptus Manet: humanitāro un mākslas zinātņu žurnāls = Scriptus Manet: Journal of Humanities and Arts","volume":"178 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120980470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Covid-19 crisis changed the work of regional media. The ways of obtaining media information diversified, mutual communication and the created content changed, and interaction with the audience increased. The number of subscribers and advertisers decreased significantly (up to 50 %), and therefore the total revenue, creating a serious threat to the existence of the media. The financial situation forced several media executives to reorganise the media – to reduce the number of employees and their salaries, decide on reducing the periodicity of newspapers, and raise prices. Several regional media leaders predict that the media will be shut down if the situation does not improve. The public appreciates and trusts the work of the regional media, they are happy to consume them as well, but more and more often, they cannot afford to pay for them. The results of the survey confirm that with each decade of life achieved, people’s interest in local events (news in the municipality and region, culture and sports) and, consequently, the intensity of regional media consumption increase. Local proximity increases mutual trust between regional media workers (their content) and local community residents (audience). Interactions (seeking advice and assistance, participating in content creation, recording violations of restrictions) were particularly active during the Covid-19 crisis when the doors of state and local authorities were closed (the work took place from home) throughout the emergency. The rapid spread of Covid-19 changed the traditional agenda of regional media – methods of information gathering and mutual communication (remote interviews, video conferences, and meetings, virtual meetings on electronic communication platforms), as well as the content created. The results of the content analysis confirm the priority status of the Covid-19 topic (multiplicity, intensity, location) in the content of the regional newspaper Alūksnes un Malienas Ziņas. With the materials dedicated to Covid-19, journalists informed the audience about the latest events, explained the decisions made by the government, motivated them to act responsibly, appealed to conscience, called for mutual help, condemned, comforted, and also saved. Through an innovative format, UBUmaterial started as the attempt of three actors-narrators isolated due to pandemic to rehearse and somehow present Ubu Roi by Alfred Jarry. However, exploring the Instagram and play’s potentialities, the three actors soon would be transformed into narrators of their own effort, using their households and adopting a commenting stance on their everyday situation. Thus, the dramaturgy of UBUmaterial’s posts (videos) integrated most of the traditional popular theatre’s features and strategies. It was the first programme in Latvia that was developed based on topical ideas about art as research and practice-based artistic research. This approach to art education can be described as strongly critical to neoliberalist treatment of art and, particularly in Europe, was also a part of reaction from the side of art educators and practitioners to changes started by the Bologna process in the field of higher (art) education. The approach was integrated purposefully into the philosophy of New Media Art studies and research at Liepāja University, first of all by establishing MPLab – a Laboratory of Art Research as a space for creative growth where every student has more freedom and independence but is required to be able to mobilise independently and think critically and creatively. In this article, the basic assumptions for programme development, main events, and results are presented and analysed, based on inner planning and implementation documents of the study process, as well as research papers discussing the basic assumptions of the philosophy of the study programme. In the centre of philosophy and content development of the bachelor and later master and doctoral level study programmes at Liepāja University was the idea of art as a research activity. It is connected to the recognition of the dimension of science in art, more concretely, that art does not need commentary to become “scientific”. Similar to the science where the goal and the product of the actions is the new, emerging knowledge, the art can also be oriented toward the development of knowledge, in the process of artistic creativity, through experimentation, observation, reflection, and abstraction that influence the following process of art-making. The inquiry and experiment, as well as collecting and presenting data about materials and environment the artist works with, is an essential part of the artistic activity, especially in contemporary art. Based on practice, an artist is driven to the questions and hypotheses that later can change the course and result of his/her artistic work. The art based in practice is also becoming more and more interested in life and involvement in social processes, practical issues, and the critical discourse of the art. An element of the philosophy of artistic research is also an orientation to change and active action. Artistic research tends to the new, but it is planned not only as a performative but also transformative action; therefore, it is important to think about social responsibility and social engagement in the context of artistic research. Activity, engagement, orientation towards the change, and thought-through practice-based training are the most important elements of contemporary art to encourage social and cultural sustainability development. Its mission has always been to help mature a young person, to form valuable foundations of personality. The aim of the article is to reveal the work of early Lithuanian children’s literature, especially of the 19th century, playing an important role in the life of society, i. e. playing the role of a mechanism of cultural and social inclusion, changing society and human mentality. It is necessary to emphasise that the field of children’s literature discussed here also includes early Lithuanian writing, which cannot be directly considered children’s literature, but it undoubtedly integrated the care for children (in the form of catechisms, elementary publishing, etc.). What functions of cultural and social inclusion did the texts intended for children (or also for children) perform, and what impact did they have? Methods used: sociology of literature, cultural analysis, interpretation of the text. The phenomenon of inclusion is an important aspect of Lithuanian children’s literature and culture. This is also testified by the history of Lithuanian books for children and works of particular writers. It is significant that in the cultural situation of the 19th century, children’s literature contributed to overcoming children’s illiteracy and helped create and unite the readership community in the making. Children (and often youth) were getting used to the book, a completely new form of communication for them. Little by little, people became aware of the importance of reading, writing, and education in general. Some texts of educational type have been left by Lithuanian writers of the 18th–19th centuries, and their traditions were continued by the creators of the early 20th century, portraying the fate of the book smuggler, the wish of a country child to learn, the authority of a published book, and other similar aspects. The book and the ability to read decrease seclusion, include the child and the youth into community life, and open wider horizons for thinking. Different aspects of inclusion (and there are more of them than mentioned in this paper) can also be found in modern children’s literature. A book and literature dedicated to the child or young person help to survive social seclusion, isolation and show the ways and means of overcoming them. Finally, children’s literature adjusts to the social environment, participates in society modelling, change, and establishes itself as an integral part of an inclusive society. Today children’s literature is perceived as an integral part of an inclusive society.","PeriodicalId":173630,"journal":{"name":"Scriptus Manet: humanitāro un mākslas zinātņu žurnāls = Scriptus Manet: Journal of Humanities and Arts","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124469882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
