The forest covers an area of 203 ha and it is owned by the Franciscan religious order. Since 1985 the “La Verna” forest has been managed by the “Casentino” Comunita montana. In 2008 a sector of about 36 ha was selected for an intensive study of the stand structure, and the quality and quantity of coarse woody debris (CWD). A regular network of 33 sampling point was established. The average stem density was 473 trees ha-1 (range 133-1283) and the growing stock of living trees was 657.1 m3ha-1 (299-1452.9). The average volume of CWD was 66.9 m3ha-1 ranging between 3.7 and 355.8 m3ha-1. Of the total volume of dead and living trees, CWD comprised 10.2%. Among the CWD the volume of logs (66.1%) was greater than the volume of snags (28.3%) and stumps (5.6%). The study has emphasized that the “La Verna” forest, besides the historical and cultural value, has an important naturalistic value. The past low-intensity silviculture, traditionally applied by the Franciscan monks, has allowed the development of the current mixed structure and the co-existence in a managed forest of some structural “old-growth” characteristics e.g. the multi-layered vertical structure, the high living biomass and the quantity and quality of CWD.","PeriodicalId":173092,"journal":{"name":"Italian Journal of Forest and Mountain Environments","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115453077","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Si evidenzia, peraltro, che diversi aspetti del funzionamento ecosistemico e delle interazioni fra i fattori del cambiamento globale, in primo piano la relazione fra i cicli del carbonio e dell’azoto, richiedono una migliore interpretazione, e che i modelli di circolazione generale rappresentano in modo ancora inadeguato alcuni processi che potrebbero essere decisivi nella regolazione degli scambi di materia ed energia fra biosfera e atmosfera. Per questi motivi esiste ancora incertezza sul ruolo che, negli anni a venire, le foreste e la biosfera svolgeranno nella mitigazione dell’effetto serra e del cambiamento climatico.","PeriodicalId":173092,"journal":{"name":"Italian Journal of Forest and Mountain Environments","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130669639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A silvicultural system aiming to the natural regeneration by means of canopy gaps (gap-based approach) has been applied in an experimental site in the Calabrian pine (Pinus nigra Arn. ssp. laricio Poiret var. Calabrica Delamare) stands in the Calabrian Apennine initiated in 2003: small (380 m 2), medium (855 m 2 ) and large gaps (1520 m 2 ) were compared. The main results after 7 years show that the most appropriate gap sizes for regeneration of Calabrian pine (shade-intolerant species) are those of 1500 m 2 with a d/h of 2.0. While for late-successional species (silver fir and beech) gaps of 380 m 2 with a d/h of 1.0 or slightly larger are recommended. This allows the forest manager to choose whether to maintain the pine or initiate a restoration action with native forest vegetation. The interval between cuttings is 7 years. Whereas any intervention removes the 30% of the forest, the cycle is complete in about 20 years. In this case (stands normally thinned) at the time of the first cutting from 15 up to 70 m 3 per gap, or 140 m3 per hectare can be obtained. This gap-based approach is a sustainable silvicultural treatment because of low environmental and aesthetic impact and also meets objectives for timber production.","PeriodicalId":173092,"journal":{"name":"Italian Journal of Forest and Mountain Environments","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123944781","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the first implementation has been computed the Forest Model into the regional Air Emission Inventory in order to assess and update the forest carbon stock and carbon sink of the region during the period 1990-2008. Carbon stock and carbon sink at municipal level were assigned in view of the share of municipal area of each forest type in the Region and the provincial estimated value was obtained from its municipal contributions while harvest and fire data set reported in the National Inventory Report 2011 were brought down to the NUTS2 level in order to be processed. Forest carbon stock in Lombardy has increased from 327 MtCO 2 in 1990 to 408 MtCO 2 in 2008, while carbon sink has been estimated 4.7 MtCO 2 in 2008 resulting in approximately 5.5% of regional GHGs emission level. Further analysis are in progress in order to refine the accounting at local level and to have a technical tool that allows to support decision making in the allocation of obligations for reducing emissions, as well as to enhance the forestry sector in the generation of carbon credits and in procedures of environmental impact assessment related to human settlements and infrastructure works.","PeriodicalId":173092,"journal":{"name":"Italian Journal of Forest and Mountain Environments","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132928152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In questo studio vengono esposte le caratteristiche strutturali di alcuni sistemi forestali fra quelli piu significativi dell’Appennino calabrese, con particolare riferimento ai boschi puri e misti di faggio e abete. Sono state prese in esame quattro tipologie strutturali: 1) faggeta monoplana; 2) faggeta pluristratificata; 3) fustaia mista faggio-abete pluristratificata; 4) abetina pluristratificata.Per la caratterizzazione dell’eterogeneita strutturale, oltre alla tradizionale descrizionedegli attributi selvicolturali e dendrometrici, sono stati utilizzati anche alcuni indici sintetici fra quelli piu largamente applicati in questo genere di analisi (sistema di indici NBSI, indice di Morisita e di Latham). Lo studio ha confermato come l’applicazione di forme di trattamento riconducibili a quelle della selvicoltura classica portano alla formazione di strutture semplificate, mentre il taglio a scelta consente la perpetuazione di strutture pluristratificate. Inoltre, gli indici di struttura sintetici presi in considerazione possonodare un contributo positivo per una piu efficace differenziazione della distribuzione spaziale orizzontale e verticale delle piante all’interno di un popolamento.","PeriodicalId":173092,"journal":{"name":"Italian Journal of Forest and Mountain Environments","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133423940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
