We studied a sample of eight international novice professors in the program to demonstrate its effectiveness. What distinguishes this program from others is that it offers mentoring to help professors both improve the quality of their instruction and adapt to the culture of the country and of the university. The methodology used was that of case study with a design of pre-test, intervention, post-test. The professors who participated in the mentoring program demonstrated an improvement of 0.95 points (on a scale of five points) in their student evaluations. The principal causes of deficient teaching performance in the novice international faculty were: the absence of pedagogical knowledge and the lack of teaching experience, as well as lack of familiarity with the country culture and the organizational culture of the university. Our study shows that a mentoring program can help improve low student evaluations of novice professors who come from another culture and are recent graduates of a doctoral program.","PeriodicalId":170914,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 15th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114121856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We collected a large number of operation logs from e-textbooks to analyze the process of learning. In addition, we conducted a quiz to check the level of understanding. In our study, we especially focus on an analysis of the relationship between learning behavior in informal learning and its effectiveness in the corresponding quiz. We apply a machine learning and classification methodology for behavior analysis. Our experimental results demonstrate that students who undertake good informal learning achieve better scores in quizzes.","PeriodicalId":170914,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 15th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"52 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121227841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A high level of satisfaction can increase the motivation of students, their engagement and experience, and therefore improve their learning. This paper is concerned with the investigation of the effect of adaptation based on learning style on students' satisfaction. An adaptive approach, which involves the construction of personalised learning paths based on learning style, was implemented in an adaptive e-learning system. A controlled experiment in this learning environment was conducted with sixty undergraduate students to evaluate their level of satisfaction with the system. The results indicate that the students were generally satisfied with their learning experience. It can be concluded that adaptation of learning content according to learning style can improve student satisfaction and enhance their experience and motivation.","PeriodicalId":170914,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 15th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123293593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Teachers attach or embed NFC tags into answer choices and students answer each question by bringing their mobile phone close to the answer that they think is the correct one. A four-week experiment shows that this assessment method takes more time than a traditional one. Also, the grades differ from those using traditional assessment. Analysis of the experiment results and subsequent tester survey and interviews show that this assessment method can help students incorporate what they have learned in the classroom into real life, as well as reflects how well students comprehend what is taught to them in a classroom setting.","PeriodicalId":170914,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 15th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124968831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various attempts have been made to develop models and guides for video games which allow students to practice and/or learn certain curricular content while still meeting their expectations for the game to be fun. Achieving such a balance between teaching and gaming objectives in no easy task. With this in mind, using the \"Integrative Learning Design Framework\" and considering the school system requirements, this presentation describes how to develop video games.","PeriodicalId":170914,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 15th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"2004 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125807360","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Explanatory analogies are often used by good teachers to explain complex concepts in a sticky manner. Such analogies explain an unfamiliar target concept by mapping it onto a more familiar source concept. However, the use of analogies in teaching and learning often relies on the imagination of individual teachers or the initiative taken by students in finding them. In this paper, we present Stickipedia, an analogy search engine that automatically retrieves analogies populated on the internet for a searched target concept. Based on a student survey, we also suggest attributes of analogies which could aid students in choosing the analogies they prefer. We populate some of these attributes in Stickipedia for the retrieved analogies.","PeriodicalId":170914,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 15th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126039650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the launch of this curriculum reform in 2008, more than 100 members of the faculty and staff have collaborated to design and deliver novel instructional activities for first and second year medical students. To date, five iterative processes of analysis, development, evaluation, and revision have been completed with large classes of medical students, with each class enrolling over 150 students. The 18-month Pre-Clerkship curriculum is supported by newly created system and technological infrastructure, and is continuously evaluated to assess the impact on students' learning. Lessons learned from each iteration inform revisions to curricular practices and infrastructure for subsequent iterations of the curriculum. As implementation of this innovative curriculum has progressed over several years, emergent issues have also stimulated medical education research projects that explore the implementation of Flipped Classroom Model and Team-Based Learning. In summary, the curriculum reform described in this paper provides valuable lessons for educators interested in implementing large-scale curricular innovations.","PeriodicalId":170914,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 15th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124716129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The underlying pedagogical approach, inquiry-based learning, is often criticized for the lack in teaching learning content and for overburden novice learners. To fill this gap, we developed the Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) tool which is used by teachers to define a knowledge domain, i.e. The objects, attributes and their relations to each other. Learning resources can be assigned to subsets of objects and attributes. By navigating through the concept lattice students get an overview of the topic. They learn by consuming learning resources, either in a self-regulated way, by interacting with the nodes of the lattice, or when following a recommender system which suggests learning resources based on the domain model and defined pedagogical rules. The paper describes the FCA tool and how it is used by teachers and students, and the recommendation strategy that supports students when browsing the knowledge domain.","PeriodicalId":170914,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 15th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"153 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129152178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
