Micro-finance group processes entail economic and psychological costs to members. We defined these costs in terms of a given financial loss and reputation loss, perceived by members as economic and psychological threats. Participants responded to the measures of joint liability, fear of reprisal and peer pressure. The results show that members are able to make the subtle distinction between different types of peer pressure and joint liability. We also show that psychological threats perceived by borrowers are key to understanding MFI group processes, especially as triggers to a repayment crisis.","PeriodicalId":170603,"journal":{"name":"Social Entrepreneurship eJournal","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127660377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Kew","doi":"10.2139/SSRN.2786949","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2139/SSRN.2786949","url":null,"abstract":"The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor’s (GEM) social entrepreneurship activity research is based on interviews with 167,793 adults in 58 economies in 2015, and is thus the largest comparative study of social entrepreneurship in the world. This report presents a broad measure of social entrepreneurship activity as well as a narrow measure. The broad measure considers individuals who are starting or currently leading any kind of activity, organization or initiative that has a particularly social, environmental or community objective. The narrow measure imposes the following restrictions: that this activity, organization or initiative (i) prioritizes social and environmental value over financial value; and (ii) operates in the market by producing goods and services. The narrow definition is available for 31 economies. The main findings from this report include:• The average prevalence rate of broad social entrepreneurial activity among nascent entrepreneurs in the start-up phase (SEA-SU-BRD) – that is, individuals who are currently trying to start social entrepreneurial activity – across all 58 GEM economies is 3.2%, but ranges from 0.3% (South Korea) to 10.1% (Peru). By comparison, the rate of start-up commercial entrepreneurship averages 7.6% in the world, and ranges from 13.7% in Vietnam to a high of 22.2% in Peru.• The average prevalence rate of individuals who are currently leading an operating social entrepreneurial activity (SEA-OP-BRD) across all 58 GEM economies is 3.7%, but ranges from 0.4% in Iran to 14.0% in Senegal.• Narrowing down the definition of social entrepreneurship makes a considerable difference to the prevalence of social entrepreneurial activity. In terms of the narrow definition, organizations must be driven by social value creation rather than value capture, and be market- rather than non-market-based. The average prevalence rate of narrow social entrepreneurial activity among nascent entrepreneurs in the start-up phase (SEA-SU-NRW) across 31 GEM economies is 1.1%. The average prevalence rate of narrow currently operating social entrepreneurial activity (SEA-OP-NRW) is 1.2%. • One of the emerging themes in social entrepreneurship is measuring social impact. About half of those individuals who fit the broad definition of social entrepreneurs (SEA-OP-BRD) report that they put substantial effort into measuring the social and environmental impact of their social venturing activities.• About five in every ten individuals involved in broad social entrepreneurship activity that is currently operational (SEA-OP-BRD) reinvest profits towards the social goals set by the activity, organization or initiative.• Of the world’s social entrepreneurs, an estimated 55% are male and 45% are female. The gender gap in social entrepreneurial activity is significantly smaller than the roughly 2:1 gender gap in commercial entrepreneurial activity found in some economies. For the Middle East and North Africa, the difference between women’s involvemen","PeriodicalId":170603,"journal":{"name":"Social Entrepreneurship eJournal","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117122956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this measure was to examine the relationship between entrepreneurs’ personality traits and their perceived SE performance. The results indicated that SE performance can be assessed using four dimensions: personal issues, social aspects, business elements, and service programmes. Extraversion positively influenced service programmes, and openness negatively affected service programmes. Neuroticism and conscientiousness positively predicted personal issues and service programmes, and agreeableness positively predicted all dimensions of perceived SE performance. The results also demonstrated the curvilinear relationship of the U-shaped curve between neuroticism and personal issues and the social aspects of SE performance. Furthermore, the results showed the curvilinear relationship of the inverted U-shaped curve between agreeableness and the four dimensions of SE performance.","PeriodicalId":170603,"journal":{"name":"Social Entrepreneurship eJournal","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122307207","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Microfinance as a tool of corporate social responsibility provides small loans with some sort of repayment criteria, savings and other financial services to the impoverished over the world. So it has dual advantages - first it aids emerging entrepreneurs to become socially responsible and second it encourages economic development. With increasing importance of social responsibility, many big corporations have made partnership with major microfinance institutions by providing financial aid, management skills and employee training. As credit lines are easily opened because of microfinance, people who struggle to grow during the time of financial hardship or natural disaster can access small loans to survive till their financial status improves. The strong idea behind microfinance is to offer independency and economic stability to every class of society, which helps to recover their communities from social and economic downfall and thus empowers Socio-Economic status. So the paper deals to evaluate the increased level of Social and economic development because of micro-finance and CSR partnership. At the end some suggestions are incorporated to give new directions to MF-CSR program to fulfill new aspirations of people.","PeriodicalId":170603,"journal":{"name":"Social Entrepreneurship eJournal","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131141899","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This chapter summarizes a study of Diamond Cab, perhaps Hong Kong’s (China’s) first and most successful social enterprise, that has created a specialty taxi market from the ground up and quickly gained legitimacy in the new market. The study proposes several factors that explain the success of the social enterprise: a focused strategy, social design orientation, social bricolage, and informal and formal advice networks, as well as biographical variables including personal values, traits, and distress. It concludes with implications for theory, practice and policy making.","PeriodicalId":170603,"journal":{"name":"Social Entrepreneurship eJournal","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126099339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Social enterprises are hybrid companies that combine both non-profit and for-profit missions into one organization. There is limited literature on these nascent organizations, and the hybrid nature of these companies makes their management much more complicated. This case study research looked at the start-up phase of Lion’s Thread, a social enterprise with production operations in Uganda and sales in the United States (U.S.), to determine factors for progress. Collective action is seen as instrumental in the development of this social enterprise, as many individuals worked together to achieve the company’s progress. Effectuation was strongly present in this case where the solution is shaped based on the resources available in the local environment. Leaders of this social enterprise as they became embedded in the local environment and determined resource availability, recognized opportunities, worked with and restructured systems, and through a collective action approach, created social value. Lastly, we found in this bi-cultural context, adapting the performance goals and expectations of the social enterprise was needed.","PeriodicalId":170603,"journal":{"name":"Social Entrepreneurship eJournal","volume":"18 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133318722","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper also explores social entrepreneurship as a new area of business that takes the problem solving skills of commercial entrepreneurship and combines it with the social concerns of charities and non-profits. The paper concludes that in order for social entrepreneurship to be successful, a paradigm shift of new metrics (beyond the traditional single bottom line metric of profitability) is required.","PeriodicalId":170603,"journal":{"name":"Social Entrepreneurship eJournal","volume":"118 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123303427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
