In this paper, various kinds of experiments for modeling and control for large flexible manipulators are reviewed. Although most experiments are restricted to either vertical or horizontal planes, and control algorithms are applied to simplified examples, insight gained in this survey will be useful to the advancement of the state-of-the-art for accurate modeling and precision control of flexible multibody manipulators.","PeriodicalId":170527,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The guidance law is assumed to be in some feedback form with unknown gains. The gains are then parameterized and obtained by solving a finite-dimensional parameter optimization problem. The advantage of this approach is that the control law would be in a feedback form while maintaining optimality. Furthermore, the design parameters are exactly the guidance parameters for implementing a guidance law.","PeriodicalId":170527,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. However, the speed of a highly maneuverable modern missile varies considerably during flight, and the performance of PN is far from being satisfactory in that case. In this article we define a new guidance law that steers the heading of a variable-speed missile to a straight line collision course. The performance improvement of the missile using the new guidance law as compared to PN is demonstrated by simulation.","PeriodicalId":170527,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. A c x c real symmetric matrix A is relaxed negative definite if z 7 A z < 0 for any nonzero z E R;,+ C IR'. Based on this direct stability criterion, the task of local feedback stabilization problems for nonlinear control systems in the corresponding settings is reduced to constructing feedback laws such that the closed-loop stability characteristic matrix be relaxed negative definite. Moreover, it is shown tha t , depending on the number of controllable modes of the linearized system, there may exist a variety of design options for achieving stabilization. The approach involves maximum a posteriori (MAP) detection and nonlinear estimation using the Extended Kalman Filter. The problem is set up as a multiple hypothesis testing problem with uniform a priori probabilities. Each hypothesis is associated with a particular set of initial conditions that pertain to a given range of values of the signal parameters. The joint detection/estimation filter (JDEF) is then applied to detect the presence of the sinusoid and estimate its parameters. Experimental evaluation of this technique demonstrates accurate performance' in Gaussian noise.","PeriodicalId":170527,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. For effective design of a large-scale linear system with multiple flexible modes, the original model is block-decoupled into a multi-time scale structure using the fast and stable matrix sign algorithm. To enhance the robust stability and performance of the linear system, an optimal regional-pole placement technique is applied to design a continuous-time optimal state-feedback control law with regional-pole constraints for individual block-decoupled subsystems. For digital control of the continuous-time system, the designed continuous-time state-feedback control law needs to be converted into an equivalent discrete-time state-feedback control law, using the recently developed digital redesign technique. Since the states of the linear system are, in general, inaccessible, a digital observer needs to be constructed for practical digital implementation of the digitally redesigned discrete-time state-feedback control law. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is demonstrated through the design of the optimal digital controller for the X-ray Timing Explorer (XTE) spacecraft system. The designed results are demonstrated by the digital simulator of the XTE spacecraft system.","PeriodicalId":170527,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. In this case the JDEF is used to estimate the presence and location of a point target when the received signal is corrupted by multipath. In the formulation of the problem it was assumed that both the target and sensor were stationary and that there was an equal probability of the point target being present or absent along a center look direction. This implementation of the JDEF proved to be quite successful and can be easily expanded to estimate a larger number of unknown parameters.","PeriodicalId":170527,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
