The study adopted a qualitative methodology with a phenomenological design. The study applied purposive and snowballing sampling methods, and in-depth interviews were conducted among six participants. Findings indicated that students' attitudes towards risk-taking behaviours were mainly positive due to the perception that they knew their limits and were able to restrain their use for social and recreational purposes. Those with negative attitudes had negative experiences due to obsessive engagement in the behaviour. This study suggests the importance of having an open discussion surrounding risk-taking behaviours and the need to educate university students and understand the thought process regarding their attitudes towards risk-taking behaviours.","PeriodicalId":170307,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127095459","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These percentile norms were derived from a suite of early reading assessments in Malay administered to 866 Primary One (Grade 1 equivalent) school children from multilingual and multi-ethnic backgrounds. During testing, the children (462 males and 404 females) were approximately seven years old. The early reading assessment battery included measures such as letter writing, letter name knowledge, letter name fluency, rapid automatised naming, phonological awareness comprising elision, phonological memory, spelling, word reading accuracy, word reading efficiency, oral reading fluency, reading comprehension, vocabulary comprising expressive vocabulary and receptive vocabulary, and listening comprehension. These percentile norms are useful for the early identification and intervention of young children with reading difficulties and reading disabilities from multilingual communities whose languages include Malay, a transparent orthography. The implications of using the norms data for the diagnosis and classification of children with reading difficulties are discussed.","PeriodicalId":170307,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133992900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study utilised open-access journals to cover environmental, public health, landscape, and urban planning databases from 2000 to 2021, focusing on specific keywords. Five major themes emerged from the research. Most studies from the early 2000s to 2014 focused on the negative consequences of a poorly constructed built environment on mental health. Since 2015, the focus has shifted to a broader context, primarily the urban environment, its relationship with mental health and how it contributes to positive mental health. Finally, evidence of changes in the context and circumstances may shed light on the research's future trajectory.","PeriodicalId":170307,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126269596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Electrodes were placed on the prefrontal cortex and at reference sites to conduct the experiment. The patient was asked to remain still and rest by sitting in a chair. The technology was then used to record the electrical waves emitted by brain activities. After ten cycles with a break interval, theta, alpha, and high beta brainwaves were discovered. There were statistically significant brainwaves in the prefrontal cortex. Remarkably, the ascending high beta oscillation range was the highest, while the alpha wave was the lowest, contradicting earlier results. Anxiety, excitement, and focus were thought to be associated with the highest range of high beta waves.","PeriodicalId":170307,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120963975","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This quantitative study explored the students' perceptions of online learning experiences, challenges, and strategies in implementing English speaking activities. 127 out of 315 students responded to the questionnaire, which involved asking for information on students' backgrounds, perceptions of online platforms, online learning adoption and difficulties in implementing speaking tasks via online learning. The findings reveal that while most students have positive perceptions of online learning platforms for English-speaking tasks, a small percentage of them still prefer physical classroom learning. Nevertheless, lecturers' strategies of prompting for ideas, asking questions, and exploring creative ideas for speaking activities have successfully met the students' online learning needs.","PeriodicalId":170307,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114975479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ability of perpetrators to initiate the personal growth initiative (PGI) process on their own is the topic of this research. Six sexual violence perpetrators who are now wards of penal institutions in Indonesia and have exhibited high PGI Scale-II scores, are the participants of the study. The convenience sample method was used to recruit six persons for a focus group discussion on PGI. Findings reveal that these wards have time to reflect on their actions and emotional blunders, prepare themselves for a better life, and plan what they will do after being freed from penal institutions. We suggest that violators explore various personal development activities that can aid in self-improvement.","PeriodicalId":170307,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130330396","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, despite the extensive use of CL in college English classes, there are still multiple issues and dilemmas. More research into its practical application is required to reap the benefits of CL and enhance students' holistic development. The key results of a review of CL include that teachers must comprehend students' genuine requirements and the issues they face in learning and give full play to the role of teachers' effective intervention in both online and offline CL.","PeriodicalId":170307,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128230179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Academic pressure, employment pressure, interpersonal relationship, emotional problems all impact students' bodies and minds. This paper aims to comb through relevant literature to identify the factors affecting mental health among college students in China. Five hundred forty-five articles were retrieved containing relevant keywords such as factors affecting mental health from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database. These articles were published from 1989 to the first half of 2021. A broad thematic analysis revealed that these factors could be grouped into four main categories: family, social, college-life, and individual factors. This paper has a significant contribution as it lays the foundation for further investigation into mental health issues among college students in China.","PeriodicalId":170307,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132384868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a critical part of the national education system and the development of human resources, vocational education in China plays a crucial role in the development of diverse talents, the transfer of technical skills, and the promotion of employment and entrepreneurship. This paper aims to explore the history, roles, challenges, and the way forward for vocational education in China. It is found that vocational education in China has gone through a series of name changes before settling on its current nomenclature. Although vocational education is essential to complement general academic education to build a nation, it faces an uphill battle to gain the same status and recognition bestowed on general education. These challenges include curriculum design, poor linkages with industries, public perception, and other structural issues. This paper also discusses how to overcome these challenges to improve vocational education in China.","PeriodicalId":170307,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122652253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
