Classical \"teaching aid\" service for faculty members of the university used to (1) design and print either single or multiple copies of overhead transparencies, slides, photos course materials, handouts, etc; and (2) design illustrations for textbooks and articles. The audio-visual service offered lending, maintenance, repair and installation of audio-visual equipment and assistance with its use both in the classrooms and at the conferences, workshops, organised in the University.","PeriodicalId":169895,"journal":{"name":"European University Information Systems","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-03-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131887850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The technique of user-space communication reduced the overhead caused by the Operating System protocol stacks. Although being successful in terms of achieved performance (latency as well as throughput), the proposed communication models often use nonstandard programming interfaces and sometimes also nonstandard communication semantics. But application development relies on standardized and well defined programming interfaces such as Unix sockets or programming environments such as PVM and MPI, to ensure portability and maintainability.","PeriodicalId":169895,"journal":{"name":"European University Information Systems","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-03-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128040504","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two challenges are encountered especially often: support for a company’s evolving business processes and the ability to build better quality software faster. It is clear that information systems are part of business processes. The more the software supports a company’s business processes, the more valuable it is. Accordingly, changes in business processes and strategies must be reflected in the supporting software and systems. This is becoming one of the key issues in integrating IT infrastructure development with business development. It argues that users take in messages from an online system’s structure, layout and navigation alongside more direct methods of information uptake such as reading or scanning. If this subliminal absorption is harnessed and exploited by developers, it can be used to encourage learning in overlooked or excluded target user groups. The principle can be developed using other models of information uptake such as gaming and cartoon-reading to encourage learning to take place beyond the ubiquitous textbook paradigm. User groups of materials ranging from online support to e-commerce websites can also benefit from developer awareness of invisible learning principles at the design stage of online systems.","PeriodicalId":169895,"journal":{"name":"European University Information Systems","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-03-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126689502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
