Until now the Law was rather concise and schematic leaving the Government to regulate most of the practical issues related to the organization of studies and functioning of higher education institutions. On the other hand, after providing that ”institutions of higher education are to be granted autonomy” such institutions interpret the concept of autonomy rather broadly.","PeriodicalId":169895,"journal":{"name":"European University Information Systems","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-03-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123102911","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mass of information dealt with and the number of users relying daily on this support require a reliable and performing infrastructure. Although they were the object of a moderate interest at the start, the problems resulting from how to make secure the information circulating between the users have been largely taken into account for the last four years at the highest level of the university. This growing awareness of the leading executives of the university has removed a lot of obstacles and has directed the security objectives very close to the needs of the users. However, one should not hide the problems that have been run into: most of the times they were net of a technical order. Indeed, it is necessary to define correctly the role played by the actors of the securisation and have it accepted and respected by all.","PeriodicalId":169895,"journal":{"name":"European University Information Systems","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-03-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127222219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More than 56 countries were represented. It is thought that education business will approach 90 billions of US dollars in 2005. In North America as well as in Australia Higher Education is now considered as one of the most important business for the new century and a number of universities, either public or private, are very active in this field. These universities try to extend their business not only in their traditional territory but also in other continents. The industry is also coming into this business, not only because they need permanent education for their own employees but also because the job market now requires more skills than diploma. Who would have thought a few years ago that CISCO, Microsoft, General Electrics and other major brands would deliver their own education and diploma? Is education becoming a business as others? What will become of universities? The new technologies are causing a big turmoil and universities will not go through without trouble.","PeriodicalId":169895,"journal":{"name":"European University Information Systems","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-03-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130302158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This was just before the days of e-learning . The new Library opened in 1998, but we have learned almost as much since then as before the opening. The Library has been noteworthy for the way in which it has drawn together staff from different disciplines within the Arts Institute to work together, especially within the fields of library and IT. The conjunction has been of the nature of collaboration rather than merger.","PeriodicalId":169895,"journal":{"name":"European University Information Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-03-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130359590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In fact, Bush’s vision concerns the organization of information much more than the technical means and instruments used for that goal. Bush has often been quoted, because some of the technical ideas developed in that context seem to be excellent guesses at what later architectures for information automation turned out to be and this especially concerns the famous Memex metaphor, prefiguring to some extent some of the basic technical principles underlying the information architecture of the WWW. Still, the article actually is mainly concerned with the organization of information, with modes of accumulation, aggregation and selection of information.","PeriodicalId":169895,"journal":{"name":"European University Information Systems","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-03-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114458749","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The absence of global views and management reports as well as slowness of certain procedures complicate considerably, on all the levels, the decision-makings which often are based only on partial data. It is in particular the case in management of the students and in financial management, both procedures, the most significant on which leans a whole of procedures derived like management from the grants, welfare, the management of the building and the university canteens, the salary of the personnel, the management of the inheritance, the inventory control, .... Even if the administrative model has to advance, it does not remain less true than the management of the data and the organisation of the information exchanges between the Rector of university, the faculties and the services remain the key problems; the setting of a structural coherent frame and an internal communication system constitutes without any doubt a basic mean to decentralize effectively some responsibilities.","PeriodicalId":169895,"journal":{"name":"European University Information Systems","volume":"157 1-2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-03-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123500837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
