A flooding index FI defined by the difference of horizontally-polarized brightness temperature at 37 and 85 GHz channels is proposed to detect flooding. Spatial and temporal variation of the FI index during flooding July-August is demonstrated. The Getis statistics, as a local autocorrelation function, is discussed to show spatial clustering pattern and correlation of high value FI, and is applied to monitoring and evaluation of flooding extent and temporal evolution.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Conventional techniques get ScanSAR focusing by exploiting the SAR matched reference, and compensate scalloping by an inverse antenna weighting. Yet, this approach introduces a space-variant distortion in the focused impulse response (IRF). A rather different focusing technique is then proposed, where the set of space-variant focusing kernels is computed by means of Wiener deconvolution. They perform ScanSAR focusing and descalloping at one time, achieving the finest resolution and without distorting the impulse response.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. The 3 dimensional histogram technique is a method of displaying the brightness of the three different channels of NOAA AVHRR images. They assigned the X, Y and Z-axes of the 3 dimensional space to the brightness of three different channels respectively. This can visualize the same properties of images as a mass in the 3 dimensional space, so it is useful to classify the different categories such as the land, the sea, and the cloud. The 3 dimensional histogram has correspondence to the images and it is possible to rotate the 3 dimensional histogram interactively. So, this method assists a nonexpert to extract his interest categories in a short time.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. This study is carried out on twelve sites of Acer saccharum M. in the Algoma Region, Ontario (Canada), where field measurements and hyperspectral CASI imagery have been collected in 1997 and 1998 deployments. Individual tree samples were collected at each site for biochemical analysis and measurement of leaf chlorophyll, chlorophyll fluorescence and carotenoid concentrations, as well as leaf reflectance and transmittance. Physiological indices and derivative analysis indices extracted from leaf spectral reflectance have been tested at canopy level using CASI data of 72 channels and 2 m spatial resolution at 3 simulation scales which progressively more closely represent the observed above-canopy reflectance spectra from the sites: single leaf reflectance data, infinite reflectance calculated from optically-thick leaf simulation formulae, and canopy reflectance models using nominal site canopy architecture data. This study shows that selected algorithms connecting leaf reflectance and transmittance data to corresponding bioindicators at the leaf level can be expressed at canopy level through canopy models yielding predictions of bioindicators in airborne imaging spectrometer with coefficients of determination as high as 0.91.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. In the summer of 1998, the authors have participated in the Inner Mongolia Grassland-Atmosphere Surface Study (IMGRASS) campaign. Apart from many other measurements (tower, eddy correlation, tethered-balloon, total and spectral radiation, soil temperature gradients, etc.), intensive measurements were carried out for directional radiative temperatures. Preliminary analysis of the data indicates that the difference in radiative temperature between different view angles is primarily caused by the vegetation fraction viewed. The difference between nadir and 23 degree is around 0.5 K, and that between nadir and 52 degree reaches 1.5 to 2 K dependent on the time of the measurements. This finding is similar for two independent measurement set-ups at two separate locations, both having similar sparse grass covers of around 10 cm high, and a leaf area index of 0.5.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. As browsing is mainly for visual inspection of imageries for checking area coverage of interest and cloud cover, more emphasis has been given on visual quality of image. So transformations like RGB-YUV and YUV-RGB coupled with compression have also been considered. Various compression techniques like JPEG, Wavelet based Set Partitioning In Hierarchical Trees (SPIHT) technique on Independent bands, KLT-SPIHT, RGB-YUV-SPIHT have been considered. The experiment has been done on a urban area image as well as on a hilly area image. Various results are tabulated and plotted.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. IGARSS'99 (Cat.
