L and C band HH, HV, and VV polarized images were used in the study. Band ratio and DEM data were used to reduce the topographic effects on radar images. Classification accuracy was estimated for both training and testing sites. The correlation between forest biomass and radar backscattering (LHV) were investigated. A model-based slope correction was applied to LHV backscattering image, and then biomass map was produced from this image using a regression model. The results indicate that multi-channel and multi-polarization SAR data can be used to detect different forest types and logged areas, and provide estimation of total above-ground biomass of forest stands.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. This study investigates the use of remotely sensed data for the mapping of archaeological features in the territory and as a means to monitor urban encroachment and coastal erosion that threaten this historic monument. Historic aerial photography and Corona photography are being analyzed to map archeological features. A digital elevation model (DEM) created via repeat pass interferometry from the European Remote Sensing (ERS) satellite is being used in conjunction with the multispectral imagery and geophysical and geomorphological in situ data to study the ancient settlement of the area and identify and monitor vulnerable parts of the chora. Preliminary results from classification of Landsat multispectral data and comparisons of Corona photography and the Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellite panchromatic data indicate a massive increase in the urban land cover in the study area during the last few decades. A geographical information system (GIS), for which the remotely sensed data provides the spatial framework for integrating site specific and regional information, is being developed for the site as an aid in land use planning, site protection, and development of an archaeological park.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. The authors demonstrated that process of deforestation have strong dependence on human population in an explicit form of a mathematical model. Relative appropriateness to real data of the relation was compared with other possible relations by Akaike's information criterion (AIC). Due to its high radiometric sensitivity and spectral resolution capabilities a large number of middle atmospheric constituents can be detected that are of primary interest in the various disciplines of atmospheric research. The ENVISAT ground segment concept foresees generation and near real time dissemination of MIPAS data products up to the level of pressure (p), temperature (T) and volume-mixing-ratio (VMR) profiles for the high priority target species O/sub 3/, H/sub 2/O, CH/sub 4/, N/sub 2/O, HNO/sub 3/. The basic algorithms have been defined and are currently being verified in various ESA supported studies. End-to-end tests based on simulated instrument raw data have been carried out, using prototype versions of the Level 1B (processing from raw data up to calibrated radiance spectra) and Level 2 algorithm components (retrieval of vertical p, T and VMR profiles). Runtime checks have been performed for the critical profile retrieval modules. For a reference scenario (p, T plus five trace gas retrievals for a single, 16 heights elevation sequence; one iteration per retrieval), a total runtime of /spl sim/150 s has been achieved on an IBM RS/6000 model 397.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. The VV second-iteration scattering proves accurate at all incidence angles with slightly rough surfaces and up to 85/spl deg/ with large-scale rough surfaces. At HH the second-iteration scattering loses accuracy at 75/spl deg/ with small scale rough surfaces and 50/spl deg/ with large-scale roughness. Scattering models based on the second-iteration IKA actually give better results at HH than would be suggested by the numerical evaluation of the IKA. The numerical results show that these models can be accurately applied to surfaces that include moderate large-scale roughness without first separating the roughness spectrum into large- and small-scale components.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Due to the heterogeneity of surface covers and the high variability of environmental conditions separability of spectral classes is rendered very difficult. To overcome these difficulties in the land use classification of a mountainous watershed, a fuzzy logic classification algorithm is applied. The spectral probabilities of the ML classifier are combined with the terrain properties altitude and slope, that in a fuzzy manner are responsible for the spatial distribution of landcover types. It is shown, that the incorporation of such additional fuzzy geographic information can substantially improve the results of land use classification in complex mountainous terrain.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Tracking of fresh-water plumes in Dutch coastal waters by means of HF radar 用高频雷达追踪荷兰沿海水域的淡水羽流

WERA (Wellen Radar) is a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar which, when linked to a linear array of receive antennae, simultaneously measures surface currents and ocean waves. Operating at 27 MHz, the highest spatial resolution is 0.3 km. The area covered in this mode is about 40 km/spl times/40 km. Results from an experiment at the Dutch coast in boreal fall 1996 are presented. Occasionally, a high-velocity jet has been observed which travels northwards along the coast. At the edge of the jet, some 15 km to 30 km off the coast, the high-resolution mode of WERA revealed current shears of up to 0.002 s/sup -1/. It is assumed that the jet carries fresh water plumes which originate from the Rhine and Ijssel outflow into the North Sea. In addition to the surface currents, the spatial distribution of backscatter strength is investigated. Some evidence is found that, during phases of low wind, fresh water plumes become visible as areas of reduced backscatter. This finding is in accordance with the dependence of HF ground-wave attenuation on sea-water conductivity.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. The basic idea is to filter targets in a side looking radar according to their Doppler history in azimuth and by pulse or FM modulation compression in range. Since this time SAR systems have been, from a technical point of view, considerably refined to the state of the art where resolution and accuracy are close to the theoretical limits. This paper presents a new system idea for a single frequency SAR, where resolution is achieved by phase comparison. The system configuration becomes extremely simple and is suited for groundbased and airborne high resolution SAR.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium.
