First, an application-free description of the image content is generated at data insertion. This description should globally capture the structures in the image data. Then, in an interactive step, users of different application fields can define their specific semantic labels based on the application-free representation and use them for later database queries. Such a system might help users of all levels of expertise-both experts and novice users-to find images in the archive that are useful for their particular remote sensing application. We briefly review a hierarchical description of the image content and then sketch the basic step of Bayesian inference used for interactive learning. We present one example of this interactive learning taken from our test database consisting of about 1000 small 1024/spl times/1024 images derived from 11 geocoded Landsat TM scenes.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. The filters were tested on various types of bright and dark features in observed images instead of simulated images. The filters were required to preserve contrast between the feature and its immediate background, as well as reduce speckle in the image. Based on the results of the tests, the authors found that the Small Feature Preserving (SFP) filter was best for extracting bright features, and that the Sigma filter was best for extracting dark features.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. The reflectances can be disturbed by the bottom influence in shallow water areas depending on the water depth, the transmission of the water column, the reflectance of the water, the reflectivity of the bottom materials and the spectral range of the different sensor channels. The influence of the sea bottom on the spectral reflectances is studied for the example of the shallow Oder Bank in the Pomeranian Bight of the south-western Baltic Sea. The conditions of strong bottom influence are discussed on the basis of reflectance model calculations in the studied area. The procedure for the identification and elimination of bottom disturbed pixels is presented and explained with the example of one Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) scene.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. The studies are based on C-band data from ERS SAR and Radarsat SAR from 1996 to 1998 and on polarimetric SIR-C/X-SAR data from April and October 1994. An algorithm for mapping wet snow is described which applies change detection technique to repeat pass SAR images. Effects of different look angles are studied using ERS SAR data (look angle 19/spl deg/) and Radarsat SAR Beam Mode S7 (look angle 40/spl deg/) data. In a case study the temporal change of the snow extent during the melting season 1998 is derived for a drainage basin in the Alps. Time series of C-band backscatter of alpine surface classes are studied to investigate the capabilities for monitoring soil moisture changes.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. During the period 1979-1995 sea ice was exported from the Laptev Sea with maximum export occuring in February and minimum in August. The average winter ice outflow during this period was equal to 482700 km/sup 2/. Estimates of ice exchange between the northern and southern parts of the Laptev Sea during the period 1936 to 1996 exhibited a strong interannual variability, but did not reveal significant trends.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. The authrs have designed a 1.4 GHz direct-sampling digital radiometer (DSDR) to verify the discrete-time statistical model of the receiver and to evaluate current analog-to-digital converter technology. Several tests characterize the dynamic range and noise-equivalent sensitivity (NE/spl Delta/T) caused by quantization, finite data sampling, and variations in signal bias. The results of a benchmark case study suggest that, with DSDR configured in a total power mode, a sensitivity of 0.2 K is attainable for Earth remote sensing applications like soil moisture retrieval.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. In this paper the two effective parameters are derived as a function of the Doppler centroid and the Doppler rate. Therefore, the classical clutterlock and autofocus methods can be used in CSA to get precise estimates of the effective parameters. Simulation results show that CSA using the effective velocity and closest slant range is suitable for L-band large beamwidth spaceborne SAR processing.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. To arrive at the solution, a concept of 'polarization and spatial phase' vectors for antennae and waves, different from complex antenna heights and complex wave amplitudes, has been applied. For Sinclair and Jones matrices, describing the same physical phenomenon of nondepolarizing scattering, two different Poincare/spl acute/ sphere models have been proposed based on decomposition of a Sinclair matrix into two transformations of inversion and rotation of the Poincare sphere of incident polarizations. For the Jones matrix model another Sinclair matrix has been determined followed by an additional orthogonality transformation. Such a difference in construction of the two models can explain diverse physical interpretations of their operation. Limited number of simple formulae describing scattering will be obtained when applying to radar polarimetry a special 'engineering approach' introduced in the paper.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium.
