The amplitude functions of non-spherical particles with randomly spatial orientation are derived by the generalized Rayleigh-Gans approximation. The nondiagonal extinction matrix and the Mueller matrix solution are constructed. Numerical solutions of polarimetric scattering of four Stokes parameters from random, non-spherical scatterers are obtained. To physically identify polarimetric scattering of the Mueller matrix solution, the coherency matrix and its eigen-analysis are discussed. Functional dependence of the coherency matrix and entropy upon various parameters are obtained. As an application, analysis of AirSAR images at P-, L-, C-bands is discussed.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. This surprising vertical geometry has been proven to work properly for radar while enabling a cascade of other innovations converging into a radically new design of the whole satellite for an ultimate goal of simplification and cost reduction. This paper focuses on the antenna geometry and unveils new advantages which generalise the utilisation range and reinforce the merits of the SAIL concept but also justify the implementation of such antenna on a standard bus, at least for moderate antenna size.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. The authors examined seasonal and interannual variations in surface elevation using the first two years of the Geosat-ERM dataset (Nov. 1986 to Nov. 1988). In general, the amplitude of the seasonal signal is /spl plusmn/5 cm. In addition, there is no clear periodicity in the seasonal signal as has been observed in Greenland altimeter data. Interannual variations were determined by dividing each year of the Geosat-ERM data into four 3-month seasons. The results show year-to-year variations of about /spl plusmn/3 cm. Long-term elevation change estimates from 1978-88 were measured by comparing surface elevations from the Seasat and Geosat datasets. The results show that the rate of elevation change, in general, varies spatially from -10 to +10 cm/yr. A spatial average of more than 250,000 elevation-change measurements over an area of 1.8 million km/sup 2/ yields a -3.1/spl plusmn/0.95 cm/yr rate of elevation change.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Also it is desired to use remote sensing instruments in order to survey large area (volume) in a short time. Radar is the best method if it has the ability to observe several parameters such as dual-wavelength and/or dual-polarization capability. The DSD estimation method with dual-wavelength (X-band and Ka-band) radar (dual-wavelength method) using airborne radar data has been previously shown. ZDR value of polarimetric radar is also utilized for estimation of DSD (ZDR method), under an assumption of an exponential type DSD. The authors first explain these calculation methods for the ground based system and also a method to estimate DSD by using four-parameter radar (dual-wavelength and dual polarization). Radar data used in this study is dual-wavelength; dual-polarization radar owned by Communications Research Laboratory (CRL), Japan, which is located at NASA/GSFC. Frequencies of this radar are 10 GHz and 34.5 GHz. This radar uses a lens horn antenna with the beam width of 5 degrees. The data sampling rate is 0.2 /spl mu/sec (range resolution is 30m).","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. IGARSS'99 (Cat. The main purpose of implementing polarimetric interferometry is to extract scattering medium information that may be difficult to obtain from scalar interferometry. Even though the formulation and initial demonstrations appear to be very promising, potential applications of polarimetric interferometry can only be verified by comparing polarimetric interferometry signatures with ground truth data. In order to accomplish this, the NASA/JPL TOPSAR system was modified to collect polarimetric interferometry data at C-band. During the 1998 deployment, several data sets were collected in the single pass polarimetric interferometry mode. The authors discuss important issues related to polarimetric interferometry calibration. In addition, the authors briefly discuss the polarimetric interferometric signature using the TOPSAR data.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. The character of such dependence is determined by the stratigraphy of snow cover. Quantitative retrieval of snow cover physical parameters from remotely sensed data calls for an electrodynamic model of snow cover involving stratigraphy in the description of its emissivity. One of the reasons of the disagreement of experimental and theoretical data is the practised averaging of natural stratigraphy of snow cover. The use of snow characteristics averaged over the whole thickness can lead to wrong interpretation of data of remote sensing. In this sense, electrodynamic models of dry snow cover suggested by D. Boyarskii et al. (1993), and considering its structural and stratigraphic properties are more accurate. The main purpose of the present work is to develop a structure dependent model of emissivity of the snow cover. Snow cover is considered a medium consisting of ice and air, in the case of dry snow, and of ice, air and water, in the case of wet snow. Ice and water inclusions are assumed spherical with lognormal size distribution.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. A radiative transfer equation in a dense random medium has been derived from a wave equation with quasi-crystalline approximation with coherent potential (QCA-CP) and ladder approximation, L. Tsang et al. (1987). Under these approximations, a random medium is considered as a homogeneous medium with the effective permittivity, and the scattering and extinction coefficients are evaluated by QCA-CP in Rayleigh scattering region. The radiative transfer equation includes more scattering effects than the conventional one (CRTE), but does not include the effect of backscattering enhancement. This paper considers a three layered model, composed of air, moist soil layer and perfect conductor for developing a method for detecting water contents in soil by active remote sensing. The moist soil layer may be regarded as a homogeneous soil layer with densely distributed water particles. For this model, they used a dense medium radiative transfer equation (DMRTE) with the parameters evaluated by their method to calculate the bistatic scattering coefficients of the soil layer and the degree of polarization of scattered waves by changing the polarization of incident plane waves and the fractional volume of particles.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. These radars use four frequencies to observe near-surface currents at varying depths in the top three meters of the ocean. Observations, reported, were made over a one-week period in June, 1997 during which there was a strong land-sea breeze circulation over Monterey Bay. Wind measurements were made at the MBARI M1 buoy near the mouth of the bay. Analysis of these data show that a distinct coupling exists between the near-surface current and wind pattern with evidence of the time-dependent vertical transfer of momentum through the water column. These and other HF radar observations provide a basis for limited retrieval of both surface wind speed and direction.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Although in the geodynamical sense this region is referred to as a continental margin of active type, many scientists suppose that the Korean peninsula has not been exposed to any observable recent crustal movements as distinct from the situated more east Japanese islands. Morphostructural analysis of relief, carried out by authors on the base of remote sensing data interpretation, analysis of tectonic structure and fields of tension, based on material of geological studies coupled with results of satellite and overland geophysical (gravimetrical and seismological) studies, as well as analysis of recurrent triangulation material and determinations with the help of GPS on supporting geodetic and cadastral networks have shown that from Pliocene time Korean peninsula feels sufficiently intensive as vertical, and horizontal motion. Control for the position of network of supporting spots, executed as of satellite geodesies, has allowed the authors to give a quantitative evaluation to this motion on the modern stage.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium.
