Content-based search and clustering of remote sensing imagery 基于内容的遥感图像搜索与聚类

{"title":"Content-based search and clustering of remote sensing imagery","authors":"G. Marchisio, J. Cornelison","doi":"10.1109/IGARSS.1999.773474","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/IGARSS.1999.773474","url":null,"abstract":"The increasing amount of imagery to be collected by the Earth Observing System Data Information System (EOSDIS) emphasizes the need for intelligent retrieval infrastructures which enable model fitting and hypothesis testing on a very large scale, rather than on a small subset of the available data. The authors' work addresses two strategic challenges: data streaming and organization. The first involves the reduction of raw multispectral image data into attribute terms, which quantify a number of parameters of scientific interest and their temporal evolution at different spatial scales. To this end, they are developing algorithms for feature extraction which hold great promise for the automatic categorization of large collections of images. The second challenge is to provide the technology which can organize the extracted features and turn them into information. The solution requires the customization and embedding of sophisticated statistical algorithms in a database management system. Examples are agglomerative or divisive clustering of database attributes, multivariate techniques for inspecting the dependence of any attribute on two or more other attributes, and classification and regression trees for discovering hidden relationships among attributes. The emerging field of knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) has spawned a renaissance in statistical computing and has much to offer to the remote sensing community, if they are to make the best use of the volume of the new measurements.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. According to this classification IWs which propagate with relatively low phase velocities (C/sub p//spl sim/0.5 m/s) display three different signatures depending on the parameters of surface-active films and wind speed. In particular, it is found that at very low wind speeds IWs display single positive backscatter signatures as a result of the image background falling to the noise floor at such low wind conditions. However, in different oceanic regions, the authors have observed predominant single positive signatures even when the background backscatter is well above the noise level. In this paper they report observations of IW signatures which mainly display positive backscatter variations on a background above the noise level. They seek for a common factor in the variety of observations from different oceanic regions, (such as the Strait of Gibraltar, Andaman Sea, Sulu Sea, Sea of Ball, Gulf of California, etc.) that may lead to an explanation of the phenomenon. One common factor associated with these SAR observations seems to be that they correspond to comparatively long IWs (their wavelength can be up to several kilometres) which are known to propagate with high phase velocities (C/sub p/>1 m/s).","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Correction for clipping of Doppler spectra from clouds and other atmospheric targets 对云层和其他大气目标的多普勒光谱剪切的校正

{"title":"Correction for clipping of Doppler spectra from clouds and other atmospheric targets","authors":"V. Venema, H. Russchenberg, L. Ligthart","doi":"10.1109/IGARSS.1999.774571","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/IGARSS.1999.774571","url":null,"abstract":"Computing a Doppler spectrum usually increases the radar signal to noise ratio (SNR) considerably. The noise is distributed over all Doppler cells and the signal from atmospheric targets is concentrated in a limited interval. Storing the entire Doppler spectrum is often not done to reduce data storage, instead the moments of the Doppler spectrum are computed: total power, average velocity and Doppler width. One way to prevent the signal to be drowned in noise again, when calculating the moments, is to apply clipping or thresholding. Clipping simply means ignoring Doppler cells that have a power close to the noise level per Doppler cell. A picture showing the idea of clipping is presented. Clipping is very effective in removing noise, however a drawback is that also some signal is removed. If the clip level is close to the peak power in some Doppler cell, most of the signal power will even be removed. The width of the Doppler spectra is even stronger affected. If the distribution is not symmetrical, also the average velocity will change due to clipping. The effect of clipping is studied on radar cloud measurements made with the Delft Atmospheric Research Radar, Darr. This is a sensitive 9-cm radar with a high Doppler resolution of 3.5 cm/s. Normally 256 Doppler cells make up one Doppler spectrum. This spectrum is clipped at 7 dB above the noise per Doppler cell. The Doppler width (standard deviation) for the clouds in this study is between 18 and 30 cm/s. When an accurate quantitative value for the signal power is needed the calculated average power must be corrected for the effect of clipping. To derive a function for the correction of the measured total power, the data processing of a Doppler radar has been simulated using a known signal.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. The observed surface velocity field, together with wind speed and direction measured in-situ during the experiment, were inserted into a radar imaging model to calculate theoretical radar signatures. Good agreement was found between model results and observations. Several numerical simulations performed with the radar imaging model using different wind directions indicate that the simulated radar signatures depend strongly on this parameter which, in general, is not known accurately over the ocean. Inserting the measured undisturbed density stratification into an internal wave model, theoretical density and velocity fields associated with an internal solitary wave having the same amplitude as the observed one were calculated. Also in this case, good agreement was found between model results and observations. To study the dependence of the surface velocity field associated with an internal solitary wave on strength of the pycnocline and internal wave amplitude, several numerical simulations were performed with the internal wave model using three different density stratifications. The obtained model results can be seen as a measure of the complexity related to the inversion of sea surface manifestations of internal solitary waves into characteristics of the interior ocean.","PeriodicalId":169541,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium.
