As these bridges are getting old, there is an urging need to assess their remaining capacity with the aim of prolonging their service lives. The limited literature on the topic has pointed out that there is a significant difference between the capacity predicted by available codes and that obtained experimentally. In this paper, a review of the Bridge and Tunnel Management database (BaTMan) of railway infrastructure in Sweden, is carried out to gain an overview of the current state of the Swedish railway bridge, with focus on trough bridges. Then, a non-linear finite element model is calibrated using the experimental results of the previous testing of a decommissioned trough bridge. The model is used in a parametric study where the effect of key mechanical parameters on the capacity of trough bridges is studied.","PeriodicalId":168532,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Prague 2022: Challenges for Existing and Oncoming Structures","volume":"176 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115438606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The methods of modelling can also be harnessed to create digital twins of structures with the help of data from the structural health management systems. With 10 pilot bridges, the workflow was studied and key parameters for the modelling specified. Semi-automated modelling process made it possible to create models from bridges that were designed and built before the BIM era.","PeriodicalId":168532,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Prague 2022: Challenges for Existing and Oncoming Structures","volume":"133 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114668532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is generally known that in the triangle’s corner large stress concentrations may appear. Therefore curved transitions are provided at these locations. To determine these stress concentrations the use of highly dense FE-models and indeed also engineering judgement, is needed. The latter applies to most software packages. On the other hand, one might consider to use simple beam elements, the axes coinciding with the real pier axes. In doing this, the stress concentrations will be missed and unsafe design is the result. The main aim of the research is to compare the results of an equivalent beam model to elaborate shell element models, which include the necessary transition curves. For each type of external force and rounding parameters the stress concentration factor for the undisturbed cross-sections is established. The work is presently in progress and the first results show definitely plausible factors. However, for small stress magnitude, the results are less convincing.","PeriodicalId":168532,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Prague 2022: Challenges for Existing and Oncoming Structures","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125447418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This steel truss structure has recently been refurbished and stands out because of its historical, patrimonial, architectural and sentimental value. It will be used as a greenway, while the Quisi bridge will carry the new vehicles of the railway line. In this context, on top of the technical and budget constraints, the design team is aware of the importance of finding a correlation of the structures to enhance both civil constructions, that are to be found necessarily close one to each other. Finally, the solution for the new bridge consists of a 370 metres long post-tensioned concrete box girder divided into eight spans (35+6x50+35) and 8 metres wide, with a single fixed point to longitudinal actions located at the third pier with a distinctive A-shape.","PeriodicalId":168532,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Prague 2022: Challenges for Existing and Oncoming Structures","volume":"84 11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125924230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This loss can be associated to immediate or time dependent factors such as elastic shortening, creep, relaxation, loading, and cracking, among others. In addition, environmental factors can lead to corrosion of the strands with the subsequent reduction of their area, loss of bond with the concrete and additional cracking which in turn will influence the value of the residual prestress force and the bridge capacity. Therefore, the evaluation of such losses is critical in the decision-making process of defining a financial and environmental cost optimized intervention strategies (e.g., strengthening or replacement). In this paper, a detailed literature review regarding destructive and non-destructive methods for measuring the residual force in prestressed concrete bridges is carried out and used to develop a database of existing experimental tests.","PeriodicalId":168532,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Prague 2022: Challenges for Existing and Oncoming Structures","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124858419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has three spans and a total length of 134.8 m. Due to mining activities the bridge was loaded with trucks with a total weight of 90 ton during 2012-2014 and from 2019. Crack development has been monitored manually and from 2020 with strain gauges and LVDTs. Cracks normally vary between 0.1 to 0.3 mm in width and grow in length with time. In November 2020 some of the strain gauges on the concrete showed alarming growth and the bridge was closed for traffic. Additional strain gauges were installed on vertical reinforcement bars and an assessment was carried out of the fatigue capacity of the bridge. It was found that the new strain gauges did not indicate any growth in strain and that the fatigue capacity was sufficient. The bridge could be opened again for traffic after being closed for five weeks. Monitoring drift in the strain gauges and fatigue are discussed.","PeriodicalId":168532,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Prague 2022: Challenges for Existing and Oncoming Structures","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124869175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The consequences of not adequately considering the potential impact of noise on a community can be substantial, with public relations difficulties and high adaptation or replacement costs. This paper explores the subject of noise associated with bridge expansion joints, including an assessment of what types of joint may be considered quiet, and how noisier types – such as modular or single-gap joints – may be made quieter. Approaches to evaluating noise and what should be considered are discussed, with reference to findings from illustrative noise measurement studies.","PeriodicalId":168532,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Prague 2022: Challenges for Existing and Oncoming Structures","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124956257","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Every infrastructure has to be inspected regularly, so it can be classified according to its condition. Furthermore, the infrastructure has to be recalculated and evaluated. On the basis of these two criteria – the results of the inspection and the evaluation of the recalculation, as well as aspects of sustainability – the structure will be retrofitted or renewed. This strategy has been applied in Germany for many years with great success. This procedure is explained in the paper using two examples.","PeriodicalId":168532,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Prague 2022: Challenges for Existing and Oncoming Structures","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125116937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the first case, capacity design is the basis of structural dimensioning; both strength and ductility verifications are required. In the second case, structural elements are designed to remain in the elastic field under the assigned design seismic input; ductility verifications are not enforced. In steel structures, these two design approaches might lead to very different seismic structural performances, depending on the role that the non-ductile elements and connections have in the non-dissipative design. This situation might represent a source of weakness and lead to premature failures. In the present work, with reference to a single- storey steel industrial building with moment-resisting frames in the transverse direction and con- centric braces in the longitudinal direction, the critical issues encountered when modelling the post- elastic behaviour of a non-dissipative steel structure are discussed. Subsequently, a comparison is made with a structure with the same geometry, designed with dissipative structural behaviour.","PeriodicalId":168532,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Prague 2022: Challenges for Existing and Oncoming Structures","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124265390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To give better bondage between the fibers and the matrices, surface enhancements for natural fibers can be induced through chemical treatments. In the current study, fibers are extracted from Bambusa Blumeana, an abundant local species of bamboo plant from the Philippines. Bamboo slats are pre-treated with varying concentration of 5%, 10% and 15% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and extracted fibers are treated with 10% aluminium sulfate (Al2(SO4)3) solution. Extracted bamboo fibers are subjected to Single Strand Tensile test. It is observed that bamboo slats submerged in 5% NaOH provides better mean tensile peak load. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images shows however that the fibers submerged in higher concentrations has developed rougher surface enhancements. The results can be used for developing bamboo fiber reinforced fly-ash based geopolymer composites and with further studies, can be applied as textile reinforcement for structural strengthening or retrofitting.","PeriodicalId":168532,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Prague 2022: Challenges for Existing and Oncoming Structures","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125011688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
