The steel roof structure is supported by solid masonry walls around the building perimeter and on slender cast-iron columns along two interior longitudinal lines. The south part of the building was severely damaged during the bombing raids over Sofia in WWII. The building underwent a major refurbishment within the 1995-2000 period accompanied by detailed survey and condition assessment of the steel roof structure. In 2020 the authors carried out a survey for condition assessment of the steel roof structure including checks of riveted connections, analysis of chemical composition by OES metal analyser and inspection of the roof cladding components by endoscopic device.","PeriodicalId":168532,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Prague 2022: Challenges for Existing and Oncoming Structures","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121545705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This raises stability and failure issues. This paper examines numerically a glass one-storey pavilion in high seismicity zone. The stability, seismic and temperature resistance of the structure depend heavily on the brittle nature and the type of glass. The structural body of the pavilion consists of moment frames assembled by columns and beams, assuming a glass diaphragm roof at the top level of the building. For each structural member a combination of different glass types is assumed in order to achieve an optimization of performance and failure pattern. A base isolation system is also considered. Proper finite element models were used to represent the composite cross sections. The combination of the different glass types, permits forming stable and resistant hybrid composite structures reaching the EC’s target safety levels, avoiding immediate collapse.","PeriodicalId":168532,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Prague 2022: Challenges for Existing and Oncoming Structures","volume":"208 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127602299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Located at the heart of Drammen, the bridge will be a pivotal link in the local infrastructure network, improving connectivity for public transportation (bus lanes) and cycle networks while providing a safe and enjoyable route for pedestrians. Once finished, the bridge will significantly improve the quality of the public realm, providing direct access to the platforms of the local main station as well as tying into two new urban plazas at both ends of the bridge including the barrier free access to the re-developed riverbank. The design stage faced several technical challenges, including the spanning of a 170m-wide river with poor bedding conditions as well as the construction above live railway of the Drammen Station. Concerns over ice loading, temperature extremes and the impact of a marine climate had to be addressed and new concepts for pedestrian and road safety on deck were developed. Located in a prominent spot, great diligence has been given to developing a modern architectural language that is both elegant and functional and defines the bridge as a new landmark for the city. The paper explores the development of the design from concept to tender stage and discusses the technical and architectural challenges and how they have been addressed by the interdisciplinary team of engineers, architects, landscape architects and designers.","PeriodicalId":168532,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Prague 2022: Challenges for Existing and Oncoming Structures","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125997446","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Grouted connections rely on welded shear keys to ensure sufficient interlocking of the grout-steel interface. These shear keys lead to stress concentrations, which in turn lead to fatigue cracks, and local damage of the grout. The hybrid grouted joint is a newly developed connection that is characterised by a multi-layered composition. In contrast to state-of-the-art grouted joints, hybrid grouted joints include thin adhesive layers, which are applied on the steel surfaces prior to grouting. The new connection type is in the focus of a recently finished research project. This paper presents selected results concerning the quasi-static load-bearing capacity under axial loading. The experimental campaign aimed at identifying and quantifying various aspects that influence the connection's performance. Different adherent combinations, varying overlap lengths, load directions and systematically induced imperfections were evaluated.","PeriodicalId":168532,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Prague 2022: Challenges for Existing and Oncoming Structures","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115891311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Activation of retrofit prestressing system in confined places is usually a difficult task. Instead of space-demanding hydraulic actuators, prestressing system of thermally activated shape memory alloys was used under low filler beam bridge to act against the creep inflicted deflection. Method of thermal activation of Fe-SMA with use of heating ceramic pads with resistance wire was performed on all of 17 filler beams. This method was proven as most suitable for field activation in previous application. Strengthening was done in February 2021 without any intervention into the traffic on the bridge. It is the first permanent Fe-SMA application of its kind in the world. Wireless monitoring of the bridge started before the prestress activation and continued for several months. Static load test with use of 32-ton trucks was conducted. Based on the long-term monitoring, the relaxation of Fe-SMA is evaluated and compared with the results from the experimental analysis conducted in laboratory conditions on the same retrofit system.","PeriodicalId":168532,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Prague 2022: Challenges for Existing and Oncoming Structures","volume":"207 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132207946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite all regular maintenance measures, these structures are strongly subjected to ageing and degradation, because of their exposure. Thus, leading to high maintenance expenditures. In Austria strong winters are obligatory and, therefore, de-icing measures are used for thawing. These substances contain chlorides, which are dissolved in water. Several elements of the bridges – especially the columns – are severely exposed. The exposure over many years leads to serious concrete degradation, depassivation of the rebars and pitting corrosion.The LA-ICP-MS (Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) method presented in this paper is a fast and reliable analysis strategy for determination of the chloride content in the cement phase of existing concrete structures. The high accuracy and depth resolution of the chloride profiles enable a more precise data assessment for forecast models.For this purpose, chloride profiles were taken from a retaining wall at different heights. The analysis shows significant deviations comparing traditional and new method concerning chloride contend. The challenges associated with such deviations in relation with the optimal time for remediation are shown in an example investigation.","PeriodicalId":168532,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Prague 2022: Challenges for Existing and Oncoming Structures","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130033517","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It can act either as a complement to conventional bar reinforcement or, for specific cases, even as a substitute to it. Fibres are added to concrete firstly to enhance its tensile behaviour but can bring other substantial benefits. In particular, high-strength steel fibres have a considerable impact even when added in moderate quantities to the concrete mix, therefor with reduced additional cost.This paper will investigate the potential of steel fibre reinforced concrete in the field of steel- concrete composite structure, a combination which is still vastly unexplored. The case of encased composite bridge sections (filler beam decks according to Eurocode 4) will be analysed by numerical simulations. The results show benefits in term of ultimate limit state, serviceability limit state as well as durability. This preliminary study serves as guidance for future experimental campaign.","PeriodicalId":168532,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Prague 2022: Challenges for Existing and Oncoming Structures","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130128900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After the accident, both bridges were blocked and the traffic was diverted to secondary roads, leading to major inconvenience to the users and roads administration. Initially a new structure construction was considered, given the apparent damage caused by the large fire. After inspections, laboratory tests and structural analysis, it was concluded that it would be possible to recover the existing structure with the strengthening in specific regions and conduct a load test on the most affected areas. The collaborative work between the Highway operations, inspection team, contractors and structural engineers has reduced the expected reopening time of both bridges from 6 to less than 2 months.","PeriodicalId":168532,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Symposium, Prague 2022: Challenges for Existing and Oncoming Structures","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133943987","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
