Moreover, these resources and activities can be considered as the “knowledge” of the educational communities, which should be managed, shared and reused effectively. Therefore, a number of international initiatives have emerged recently that recognize this potential and attempt to provide solutions for facilitating the sharing and the reuse of educational resources and activities. As a result a number of Learning Object Repositories (LORs) have been developed and are currently in operation. However, most of the existing LORs are designed more as “digital repositories of educational resources” rather than as “Knowledge Management” (KM) systems that support organizing and sharing of the educational communities’ knowledge. Within this framework, in this paper we study the design and the implementation of 12 existing LORs from a KM perspective. As a result, we propose a list of essential LORs’ operations that meet the current demands of web-facilitated educational communities and ultimately aim to facilitate the creation, sharing and application of “knowledge” among their members.","PeriodicalId":166491,"journal":{"name":"2010 10th IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116652405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The latter approach is that of Educational Modeling Languages, which structure learning processes as a flow of tasks that are assigned to a certain user/group. From an extensive literature review, the main drawback that is hindering the adoption of this approach is that of the adaptation: learning processes are previously designed to be posteriorly enacted by a process engine. A simple change in the process definition due to a non foreseen situation entails to stop and enact it again. This is a mayor flaw of this kind of approaches, because of its excessive rigidity. In this paper we make a review of current state-of-the-art in process engines that support learning processes, and we propose an execution semantics that supports exception handling in learning scenarios.","PeriodicalId":166491,"journal":{"name":"2010 10th IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125526862","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the field of education, we can apply this technology for learning contents and for developing skills in an engaging way. Engineering educators are aware of the need for spatial vision skills in order to project and interpret drawings and plans. We propose an educational kit for use at university-level with contents based on engineering graphics. Preliminary results of a validation study with first year Mechanical Engineering students indicate that this augmented reality training has a positive impact on students' spatial ability and learning for basic engineering graphics contents.","PeriodicalId":166491,"journal":{"name":"2010 10th IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127285128","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Generally described in the context of object-oriented programming, only a few contributions can be found in the domain of eLearning in general or Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) in particular. Based on several approaches to describe the systems’ underlying architecture into pattern collections, we have developed a component-based framework. This framework provides a foundation for the development of flexible and reusable ITS. It also provides a basis for development of other eLearning systems. Still, the complexity of the inter-modular communication requires experience and self-discipline from the programmer. Thus we investigated the framework for additional patterns. We extracted useful communication patterns and integrated them into an editor. Patterns and editor are presented in this paper as they already proved themselves very useful in regard to programming efficiency and consistency.","PeriodicalId":166491,"journal":{"name":"2010 10th IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129270697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, this study attempts to explore whether learners’ reflection levels can be improved when reflection teaching strategies fit with learners’ thinking styles in a web-based learning environment. Three reflection teaching strategies, namely constructive, guiding, and inductive, were designed to match with three thinking styles, namely legislative, executive, and judicial respectively. A web-based reflection learning system was subsequently developed for this purpose. An experiment was then conducted where the learners were classified into fit or non-fit group according to analyze whether there was a good fit between the given reflection teaching strategies and learners’ thinking styles. A total of 223 graduate and undergraduate students participated in the experiment. The results revealed that the reflection levels of the fit group had better improvement of reflection levels than the non-fit group.","PeriodicalId":166491,"journal":{"name":"2010 10th IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121446498","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The e-learning system is based on the PoEML specification and it supports the instructional design and development of learning experiences in accordance with different pedagogical approaches. A main issue in this model is to enable the integration with third party systems. We adopt some interfaces proposed in recent standardization initiatives and provide middleware to facilitate the integration of the e-learning system with specific tools that can be used to complement the functionality provided by the system (e.g., simulators, games). This system is being developed in the context of a project whose purpose is to enable the combination of Web-based and IPTV learning experiences. This development will allow us to assess the EaaS model for the support of ubiquitous learning places.","PeriodicalId":166491,"journal":{"name":"2010 10th IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122451727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
