Agglutination of erythrocytes and platelets, as well as hemolysis, can lead to “wrong” values when automatically enumerated with haematology analysers. Purpose: We present a case of in vitro erythrocyte agglutination caused by cold agglutinins as a result of viral pneumonia with the etiologic agent influenza B. Material and methods : This is a man entering a pulmonary ward with pneumonia. The examined blood picture shows abnormal values of the red blood row. The analysis was performed on a Sysmex XN1000 haematology analyzer. The flags and cell cytograms of the apparatus were examined. The morphology of the cellular elements (erythrocytes, leukocytes-DCL and platelets) of stained blood smear was examined microscopically. A saline test was applied to differentiate the in vitro agglutination. We determined the biochemical markers for hemolysis (free haemoglobin in plasma, LDH, Haptoglobin of Olympus AU 640 analyser), the titer of cold agglutinins. Virological serological studies have been appointed. Results: CPC values were monitored from admission to patient discharge and at the end of the first month. The biochemical markers for hemolysis are poorly expressed. The saline test and the erythrocyte morphology give direction to in vitro agglutination. A virological examination found antibodies against influenza type B and Coxiella burnetii (Q fever). Conclusion: A good knowledge of artificially occurring in vitro phenomena resulting from erythrocyte agglutination can avoid a number of misunderstandings or misinterpretations .","PeriodicalId":163225,"journal":{"name":"MOJ Gerontology & Geriatrics","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127814154","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

PC is based on knowledge inherent to the various specialties, possibilities of clinical and therapeutic intervention in the various areas of medical science knowledge and specific knowledge. The practice of PC should be adapted to each country or region according to relevant aspects such as availability of material and human resources, type of existing health planning, cultural and social aspects of the population served. PC has received very little attention in the field of public health. The probable reasons are that public health’s primary focuses are to prevent illness and premature deaths, and public health professionals may also believe that end-of-life issues are a health system problem rather than a priority to be addressed through population health efforts. With the rapidly aging world population and the associated increase of multiple ‘‘noncommunicable’’ diseases, the need for palliative care will increase dramatically over the next 50 years. Although palliative care services may start in one or more health care organizations that will become centers of PC excellence, it is always important to keep in mind the vision that the process to implement palliative care within a country is striving to integrate palliative care into all levels of the society from the community level upward and from the palliative care expert in the health care system downward. Given this, the creation of Palliative Care teams should be among the priorities of managers, due to the demographic transition and the high demand for palliative care due to the growth of morbidities secondary to chronic degenerative diseases.","PeriodicalId":163225,"journal":{"name":"MOJ Gerontology & Geriatrics","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133682633","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eighty-seven patients, males and females, were selected from elderly and adults in the city of Ponto dos Volantes. The data collection was done by students of the Faculty of Medicine of the UFMG, allocated in outpatient clinics in the urban and rural area, during the visits, from July 24th to 29th, 2017. It was verified the adherence through the 8-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8). Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS 18, Shapiro-Wilk, Student's T and Mann-Whitney tests. According to the national literature, arterial hypertension (75.3%) and diabetes mellitus (27.1%) are the most prevalent morbidities in the sample. Regarding the knowledge of the prescription and the meaning of the disease, 40.2% of patients did not understand the prescription and 49.4% of them did not understand the disease itself. Although there was no statistically significant difference, we identified low adherence in 24.4% of the elderly and in 14.3% of adults. The study was useful to evaluate the sociodemographic and comorbid profile of the population of Ponto dos Volantes, besides promoting health education and volunteering among students.","PeriodicalId":163225,"journal":{"name":"MOJ Gerontology & Geriatrics","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125136520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
