DNA methylation has recently been found to be associated with alcoholism. Since 1986, we have been following up on the mental health conditions of four major aboriginal peoples of Taiwan. In the current study, we attempted to profile the effect of chronic alcohol exposure on the epigenome. Clinical interviews were performed on 993 aboriginal people at phase 1 (1986), and followed up through phase 2 (1990-1992), and phase 3 (2003-2009) with DNA preparations at phases 2 and 3. Selected individuals for the present study included males from the phase 1 normal cohort who remained normal at phase 2 and became dependent on alcohol by phase 3 (n=10) and control subjects that have not had any drinking problems throughout the study (n=10). We assessed changes in DNA methylation in the blood collected at phases 2 and 3. Preliminary data show that 201 and 254 genes contain sites that are differentially methylated between the two collection time points in the control and case subjects, respectively. Among the list of genes differentially methylated in the case group, the methylation levels of 6 genes were found to correlate with alcohol consumption. These include genes involved in neurogenesis (NPDC1) and inflammation (HERC5) as well as alcoholism-associated genes ADCY9, CKM, and PHOX2A. Our study identified genes that are associated with chronic alcohol consumption at the epigenetic level. The results offer a comprehensive epigenomic map that helps enhance our understanding of alcohol-induced damages.","PeriodicalId":163211,"journal":{"name":"2013 6th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129210935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The trace elements in the breast tissue of healthy, patients women with benign or malignant tumors are measured with X-ray fluorescence analysis based on synchrotron radiation at Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility, Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China. The relative contents of trace elements in three kinds of tissue are extremely different. The relative contents of Zn and Fe in the malign breast tissue are obvious higher than that of the normal and benign tissue, while the relative contents of Zn and Fe in the benign tissue is lower than that of the normal one. The relative content of Cu in normal tissue is lower than that of tumor tissue, which is equal. The contents of Ca and K in the healthy breast tissue are obvious higher than that of the diseased tissue. The content of S, Cr, Mn, Ni and Se in the normal tissue is lower than in malign tissue but highest in the benign tissue. There is negative correlation of relative content of P, which is the equal content in the normal and benign tissue is higher than that of malign tissue. Cu and Zn is a part of antagonism trace element in body, as well as Zn and Se. Their ratio can show the progress of tumor growth. Cu can adjust the metabolizability of Fe, which is related to tumor by promoting the translation and multiplication of free radical, so Cu/Fe can be the sign of tumor progress. The distribution of trace elements is centralization in malign tissue and diffuseness in benign tissue. Both the relative content and the relationship of the trace element are different in the tissue of normal, benign, malignant tumor of breast. Those changes can show the cancerous character of breast tissue.","PeriodicalId":163211,"journal":{"name":"2013 6th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127611456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The properties of proposed similarity metric are studied including the relationship with the distance. The phylogenetic trees of the genomes of 64 vertebrates are constructed by the method of composition vector and the distance based on similarity metric and mutual information or angle cosine. The results show that the distance of mutual information and angle cosine can be constructed by the improved definition of similarity metric, and the phylogenetic trees reconstructed by the constructed distance are agreement with the current known phylogenies of species.","PeriodicalId":163211,"journal":{"name":"2013 6th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"29 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120984072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we show a preliminary study on quantifying stage progress of cirrhotic liver based on statistical shape models (SSMs). We constructed not only the liver SSM, but also the spleen SSM and a joint SSM of the liver and the spleen for a morphologic analysis of the cirrhotic liver in CT images. The effective modes are selected based on both its accumulation contribution rate and its correlation with doctor's opinions (stage labels). Both normal and abnormal livers including temporal sequence data are projected to the subspace with the selected modes. Most of the normal data are located in the center, while abnormal data are scattered around the normal data. If the disease progresses, data will move outside. The distance to the center can be used to quantify the stage progress of the cirrhotic liver.","PeriodicalId":163211,"journal":{"name":"2013 6th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124339932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The small-world network contains 120 neurons. The ratio of excitatory neurons to the inhibitory ones is 5 to 1. The Izhikevich neuron model is adopted to be a single neuronal vertex in the network model. The coupling strengths of networks are set from 1.0 to 20.0. The simulation results are studied by spike trains inter-spike interval distances for measuring synchrony. When the network coupling strength enhanced, the networks firing patterns show asynchronous state, transition state, and synchronized-oscillation state in sequence. The averaged bivariate inter-spike interval distances of multi spike trains in networks are calculated as synchrony indexes. The synchronous indexes are reduced along with the coupling strengths are amplified. It is indicated that the synchronizations are enhanced along with amplified coupling strengths.","PeriodicalId":163211,"journal":{"name":"2013 6th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115654118","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main disadvantage associated with WCE is that the huge number of recorded images must be examined by clinicians. It is a tedious and time consuming task. Developing an automatic computer-aided detection system to alleviate the burden of clinicians is required. In this paper, we proposed a new hookworm image detection algorithm. A new gradient space, named Hybrid Color Gradient (HCG) for hookworm detection is developed by analyzing the characteristics of hookworm infection images. Contourlet transformation is introduced to construct the final features. Real experiments using SVM show that reasonable classification results can be obtained. Moreover, according to our literature survey, this is the first work on automatic hookworm detection of WCE images.","PeriodicalId":163211,"journal":{"name":"2013 6th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131054912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, palpated location of these landmarks can be the inaccuracy in establishing the pelvic coordinate system due to the substantial amount of the soft tissue and may increase the possibility of misalignment of the hip prostheses, resulting in the failure of THA. The objective of this study was to initially evaluate an alternative solution in palpating the bony landmarks using an ultrasound probe. Bony landmarks on pelvis were measured using 3 methods, manual palpating probe of the iCNS, two ultrasound modes (“surface” ultrasound mode, “point” ultrasound mode). The X (Right), Y (Anterior) and Z (Superior) coordinates of IASIS, RASIS, PS, and the acetabular Abduction and Anteversion of cup orientation were calculated in the pelvic coordinate system established on the bony landmarks to assess the potential effect on calculating the cup orientation using landmarks obtained from different methods. The results show the cup orientation did not generate significantly different values from two ultrasound modes and manual palpation, which approves these two ultrasound methods can be an alternative solution to digitizie bony landmarks in navigation assisted total hip arthroplasty.","PeriodicalId":163211,"journal":{"name":"2013 6th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"135 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127551128","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, BCIs have not become widely applied, most of them are still limited in the laboratory and off-line. One of the important reasons is that: EEG signal acquisition is completed by the professional medical equipments. They are expensive and the parameters of them cannot be flexiblely changed with the specific BCI experiment paradigm. In the paper, a single-channel low-cost circuit of EEG signal acquisition for the BCI system is designed. The circuit is composed of protection circuit, instrumentation amplifier, common mode rejection (CMR) circuit, gain adjustable amplifiers and filters. In order to test this circuit, the circuit simulation and the real-time EEG measurements are implemented. The experimental results show that the circuit is effective with good performance, it is very suitable for the online BCI system.","PeriodicalId":163211,"journal":{"name":"2013 6th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125255852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
