By placing the external coil near the line which supplies the current for the gradient coil in a certain way and inserting it into the circuit of shim coils, a induced voltage which has the same wave form with the induced voltage in the shim coil is generated and consequently the coupling between the shim coil and the gradient coil is eliminated. The proposed scheme first segments lungs in a chest image using an active shape model. Next, the scheme detects initial nodule candidates by using a method previously reported by the authors. After that, the proposed scheme classifies nodule candidates into nodules and false positives by using a two-stage classification method proposed in this paper. For performance evaluation of the proposed nodule detection scheme, we made experiments using 125 images with nodules in the JSRT database which is a public database. We created 40 data sets by 40 randomized selection of 80 training images and 45 test images from the 125 images. As the result of experiments using these 40 data sets, the proposed scheme gave 6.6, 7.6, and 9.1 false positives per image for sensitivity values of 60.1, 64.1, and 69.7% on the average of 40 data sets. The time needed by the proposed scheme was 8.2 seconds per image on the average of 40 data sets using 3.3GHz Intel PC.","PeriodicalId":163211,"journal":{"name":"2013 6th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114609765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its rupture has been known as a significant cause of mortality for adults older than sixty-five years of age. Screening and assessment of abdominal aortic aneurysms are currently performed by either ultrasound or computed tomography, with the latter technology being the current gold standard. Each abdominal aortic aneurysm is different having varying percentage of size, thrombus, and calcification. These imaging markers play a critical role in determining rupture risk and therefore management of treatment. We propose here a novel application of a nonlinear dynamical model and stochastic pattern classification of abdominal aortic aneurysm imaging markers for rupture risk prediction on computed tomography scans.","PeriodicalId":163211,"journal":{"name":"2013 6th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"80 7","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120858696","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are three main phases to detect the number of nuclei in this paper. First, the detection of the nuclei areas is based on a morphological image and segmentation of the nuclei boundaries. Second, the shape, the texture and the image intensity are extracted from the nuclei regions and selected with a feature selection scheme based on Feature Subset Selection with Backpropagation classifier for the elimination of false positive findings. At last, Fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm applied on the resulted centroids in order to distinguish the nuclei of cells with inflammatory cells. We evaluated the results by comparing the pathologist rating with respect to the sensitivity and specificity rates. Our proposed methodology is promising with the sensitivity rate of 95% and specificity rate of 98%.","PeriodicalId":163211,"journal":{"name":"2013 6th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123114358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It mainly includes two steps: feature extraction and classification. This study mainly focuses scene image recognition, where color information plays an important role. The conventional color representation of images mainly includes color distribution (histogram) and its statistical information based on uniformed quantization color bin. However, for a specific recognition application such several scene types, some quantized colors maybe never appear in any scene image, and at the same time the detail variation in other quantized colors include much discriminative features. Therefore, this study proposes to characterize the color information of scene images using a leaning strategy for producing adaptive color level, and extract the histogram of the learned color levels for image representation. With the proposed strategy, the compact (learned) color levels can represent the image in our application more faithful than the uniform quantized conventional RGB color. Experimental results show that the recognition rate with our proposed methods can be greatly improved compared to the conventional color histogram.","PeriodicalId":163211,"journal":{"name":"2013 6th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122932298","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a regression based joint subspace learning method (RJSL) for automatic multi-view facial shape synthesis. This method synthesizes multiview facial shapes from one input facial image. In conventional joint subspace learning based multi-view facial image synthesis, the coefficients estimated by using the input image is directly used for multi-view facial image synthesis. In our proposed method, the coefficients are estimated by a regression method based on the coefficients of the input facial image. We first construct a original multi-view facial database. The different view image pair (e.g. 0 degree and 15 degree, 0 degree and -15 degree) are connected as a joint vector for corresponding subspace learning. The training data are divided into two groups: one for joint subspace learning and another one for regression of coefficients. And our proposed method trains by shape information and texture information. In this paper, the shape information is expressed by feature points. And the texture information is expressed by luminosity values of normalized facial image. Our proposed method uses the luminosity value as depth information. In experimental step, this method trains pseudo 3-dimentional shape information (x, y-axises: feature points, z-axis: luminosity values). Our proposed method realizes accurate multi-view facial shape synthesis by these two contributions.","PeriodicalId":163211,"journal":{"name":"2013 6th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"111 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123152364","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The subjects were kept quiet with eyes closed during acupuncture. EEG nonlinear indices correlation dimension were calculated for all the subjects. Results showed that correlation dimension D2 decreased gradually during the processes of acupuncture, and it reached the minimum point after the power was on for 20 minutes. The values of D2 in needle-withdrawal also decreased in comparison to the quiet status of pre-acupuncture. With EEG nonlinear analysis, the changes in brain function could be captured at different status of acupuncture. The results are in accord with the principle of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Stimulation of Neiguan and Shenmen could regulate of both the peripheral and the central nervous systems, providing a potential way of solving emotional issues, such as insomnia and muddled thinking. It was found that EEG nonlinear analysis could characterize the changes of brain functions pre-during- and after acupuncture states and might have some value in exploring the mechanism of acupuncture.","PeriodicalId":163211,"journal":{"name":"2013 6th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128592682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the development of medical imaging devices, the medical image data can be achieved in higher and higher definitions, and then how to analyze and visualize the acquired large-amount and complex data is a desiring demand in medical education and clinical fields. Therefore, this paper develops a multi-touch based medical image analysis and visualization system for analyzing medical images, displaying the whole body's organs of a subject and the interested organ and region to explore more detailed structures. The designed system includes three modules: (1) Image analysis module, which can smooth the medical image, and detect the edges in medical image automatically; (2) Visualization module, which can manifest not only the detailed information and global structures of an organ in different view-points but also the correlated location relations between different organs; (3) Control module, which can enable the user to easily interact with the system by multi-touch based control. The designed system is able to achieve a detail visualization of the integrated components, and can be applied to education, doctor-training and clinical sites.","PeriodicalId":163211,"journal":{"name":"2013 6th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"1221 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124574147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In recent years, a series of biochemical analysis has been performed to gain insight into the mechanism of its strong antimicrobial and anticancer activity. With the development of microarray technology, the genetic analysis of the toxic effect of TP-I on embryo is originally considered in our recent study. Based on our microarray data of the embryonic samples treated with the different doses of TP-I, we perform a series of statistical data analysis to explore the biological process of TP-I on genomic level. In this paper, we employ the hexaMplot to illustrate the continuous variation of the gene expressions with the different dose. The hexaMplot was proved to be an intuitive and effective tool to illustrate the interrelations of genes within the different phenotypes. The strength of gradual alternation in gene expression can be implied in the modified hexaMplot by comparing the microarray data among the different doses of TP-I. The probabilistic model-based Hough transform (HT) is used to classify these co-expressed genes. Three line rays supported with the corresponding 174 genes are detected in our analysis. The feature genes identified on the same line ray of hexaMplot may show the similar expression patterns in varying the doses of TP-I. The functional groups of these genes, such as antigen processing, nuclear chromatin, structural constituent of eye lens, show the coherent biological function with the high significant as detected by Gene Ontology analysis.","PeriodicalId":163211,"journal":{"name":"2013 6th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116252926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
