One such advertisement is the focus of the current study: Maybelline’s Make It Happen advertisement which conveys strong feministic values via the use of verbal and nonverbal signs. Being a product of mainly women’s interest, the advertisers bank upon the prevalent geopolitics to convey a dominant ideology: Women are equal competitors to men, and they can achieve this without having to forego all that they identify with their ‘being’. The study set out to (1) identify verbal and nonverbal signs in the Maybelline Make it Happen advertisement and (2) examine how the verbal and nonverbal signs present feminism values. The study uses a qualitative method and two theories in analyzing the data: Semiotic Theory by Saussure as cited by Daniel (2002), and Theory of Feminism by Abramovitz (1996). The finding shows that the verbal signs in this advertisement typically use motivating sentences which represent feminism values, while the nonverbal signs use colors, body language, outfits of the models, and the circumstance around the models, all of which play an important role in portraying feminism values.","PeriodicalId":16272,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Language and Linguistic Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71007510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Content analysis undertaken by the researchers brought to light the need to develop a framework and thereby embark upon evolving appropriate strategies for teaching-learning of EFL to the secondary school students in Saudi Arabia. The results also show that there is no explicit presentation of LLS. However, some vocabulary and most reading and writing strategies searched for are implicitly used in the instructions in the language activities in the analyzed books. The study concludes that the books need to be modified by adding explicit instruction of learning strategies and including more vocabulary strategies. It is suggested that teachers should be given orientation training programmes for proper appreciation of the teaching-learning strategies. The paper ends with suggestions for further research.","PeriodicalId":16272,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Language and Linguistic Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48213924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With growing complexity in decision making, vagueness and uncertainty often exist in human judgement. To manage conflicting criteria, a hierarchy structure in TOPSIS is proposed where the main criteria, sub-criteria, and alternatives are arranged in multi-level. To rate each alternatives, the weight of each criterion is evaluated using linguistic value before converted into fuzzy number as a way to measure the experts opinion. In this paper, we demonstrates our general framework for the development of hierarchal fuzzy TOPSIS. We also highlighted our initial finding on the criteria and alternatives in our case study i.e. selection of decomposition technology for food waste management. Among other things, movies entertain, educate, and inspire us, giving us role models or themes to follow. Accordingly, the ingredients that go into the making of a movie need to agree with and appeal to the cultural ethos of the viewers it is intended for. In book adaptations of movies, the very multiplicity of readings renders a variety of meanings to a text, giving it dimensions that were perhaps not envisaged by the original writer. This paper is an extended discussion and examination of kinds of alterations seen in two adaptations of Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest: The Forbidden Planet in (1956) as directed by Fred Wilcox, and The Tempest in (2010) as directed by Julie Taymor. These two versions are set apart by almost six decades, yet what brings them in close proximity is their interest with gender roles and their portrayal. These are tackled very differently as where the former tends to stay close to the mores of a male centric American society of 1950s while at the same time giving the viewers a good dose of a newfound love of science fiction, the latter indulges in completely feministic fantasy with a central figure like Prospero being portrayed as a female. Although the two versions can be compared and contrasted on many counts apart from this centrality, for ease of inquiry the current discussion was more focused on the representations of the main characters, Caliban, Ariel, and Prospero and their varied physical characteristics from one film to the other. This study examined the verbal and physical adaptations of these characters as mediums of interaction with the viewers throughout the showing mode. The study finally shines the spotlight on the contemporary political issues that are represented in yet another version of the same play, Prospero’s Books (1991). The study argues that The Tempest, in each of these film versions, represents different cultural agendas.","PeriodicalId":16272,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Language and Linguistic Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49574974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Translation shifts, especially category shifts, are very common in simultaneous interpreting from English into Arabic. The four types of category shifts, i.e., structure shifts, unit shifts, class shifts and intrasystem shifts, are investigated and analyzed in this study. The interpreting is done from English which is Trudeau’s native language into Arabic. After analyzing Trudeau's speech both in his native language, English, and the target language, Arabic, the study comes up with some interesting results. For example, structure shift is shown to be the most common and widely used one; whereas intra-system shift is the least common one. However, this does not mean that the latter rarely occurs. All of the four shifts regularly occur in simultaneous interpreting but in different degrees. No one can say that those shifts undermine or belittle the interpreting process. On the contrary, they suggest that the interpreter is well qualified in both languages that he can smoothy shift between structures, units, classes and intra-systems of both source and target languages without affecting the quality of the interpreting.","PeriodicalId":16272,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Language and Linguistic Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49317813","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The newly proposed model contributes to extend the current literature of the V-K-A model (Visual, Kinaesthetic and Auditory) for active learning. Three activities are implemented at three stages of the research, with each one involves in different approaches and methods to active learning. The impact of the newly proposed O-P-A model in overcoming passive learners in the Media and Society course is also investigated. Preliminary survey were carried out prior to implementation of approach to get a feel of the existing class delivery problem and post implementation survey is carried out to obtained feedback on the implementation of the new approaches Positive findings about the interactive classrooms are often confounded with active learning pedagogy. Our findings confirm that the interactive and active learning approaches create a positive learning environment which induces great outcomes.","PeriodicalId":16272,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Language and Linguistic Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43978358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tweeter is one of the best social networking websites now. This type of social media, people create an online profile through enlisting personal facts and interests, connect with other users, and sharing updates of information that is posted daily (Hargittai and Hsieh, 2011: 47). Besides the positive sides that such media have, there are some negative issues that these media may reflect. Bulling is one of these negatives. Pragmatically, this paper concerns itself with studying cyberbullying in Trump’s tweeters. Consequently, the data will be analyzed according to some pragmatic theories like politeness, implicature, and pragmatic metaphor. The questions that the paper tries to answer are: (1) Does Trump use a direct bully or indirect one? (2) What are the polite strategies that Trump tries to use in order to minimize the effect of bullying? (3) Are there any implied meanings in Trump’s tweeters that he wants to convey? To answer these questions, the following aims are put: (1) showing whether Trump uses an explicit bullying or an implicit one, (2) clarifying the polite strategies that Trump may use in his tweeters, (3) shedding light on the implied meanings in Trump’s tweeters. Working on these aims, the following hypotheses are suggested: (1) Trump uses explicit and implicit bullying in his tweeters, (2) there are certain strategies that Trump follows in his bullying, and (3) there are some implied meanings (implicature) that Trump is behind.","PeriodicalId":16272,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Language and Linguistic Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41748557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
