The antioxidants are believed to check the loss of hair. Therefore, the present study deals with the assessment of antioxidant and hair growth promotion activity of some Himalayan medicinal plants for exploring the correlation between the activities. The present work deals with three plants - Trigonella foenumgraecum (seeds), Trigonella corniculata(seeds) and Geranium wallichianum (roots). Aloe vera gel based herbal formulations were prepared with extracts of each plant. Hair growth activity of the formulations was studied in comparison of 2 % minoxidil suspension (standard) in denuded area of albino rats for 30 days. The antioxidant activity of ethanolic extract were investigated by measuring and comparing the free radical (DPPH) scavenging activity of the plant extracts with the activity of butylated hydroxy anisole (BHA). It was concluded that Trigonella showed the best hair growth activity. The order of hair growth initiation time was found to be as followed- T. corniculata (6 d) = T. foenumgraceum (6 d) T. corniculata (90.24 %) > T. foenumgraceum (84.65 %) > G. wallichianum (35.62 %). As the hair growth activity of the plants was found to be in the same order as that of their antioxidant activity, it was concluded that antioxidant activity is associated with the hair growth activity also.","PeriodicalId":15889,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Pharma Technology","volume":"22 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84038683","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is traditionally used as a diuretic, galactagogue, anthelmintic and antiperiodic. It is also used ethnomedicinally in throat infections, skin diseases and jaundice. Aim: The present investigation deals with detailed pharmacognostic study of the stems of the plant and establishment of its quality parameters. Materials and Methods: This involved macroscopic and microsopcic studies followed by phytochemical screening, using the established chemical tests. Results: The young and old stems of O. esculentum showed significant morphological and microscopical differences. Microscopy of the powdered stems revealed the presence of parenchymatous tissue filled with numerous rosette crystals and laticiferous vessels. Various quantitative microscopic and physico-chemical parameters were established. Both young and old stems were found to contain cardenolides, flavonoids, phenolics, coumarins, steroids and triterpenoids. Conclusion: Such detailed study can be helpful in standardizing the formulations of O. esculentum as well as serve as a guide for isolating novel phytoconstituents from it.","PeriodicalId":15889,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Pharma Technology","volume":"26 1","pages":"11-16"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75590168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bryophytes are known to posses antifungal metabolites. These plants have widely been used as medicinal plants since ancient times and are not infected by bacteria and fungi as they use chemical weapons in the form of secondary metabolites. In order to evaluate the antifungal activity of bryophytes, the present study was performed which deals with phytochemical screening to find out the presence of potent antifungal substances and its effect in crude form against Curvularia lunata the causal organism of leaf spot of wheat. In this study the preliminary tests showed that flavonoids, phenols, terpenoids, sterols etc. are present in test plant. Different types of extracts were tested against selected test fungi as antimicrobial assay through hanging drop method. The results showed that all the extracts possess good antifungal activity but the highest inhibition in spore germination per cent was observed in methanolic extract. The percentage of germination was 57.78 to 22.22 from 10 to 100 per cent concentrations of the extract.","PeriodicalId":15889,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Pharma Technology","volume":"51 1","pages":"7-10"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72901906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The efficacy of the extracts, probably due to the identified secondary metabolites, further confirm its use as an antibacterial agent in folkloric medicine and may thus be useful in the treatment of urinary tract infections. The plant can be used as a source for oral antibacterial drugs that can treat infections caused by susceptible gram-negative bacteria. Although Ricinus communis Linn (red and green variety) were found to contain some bioactive compounds with pronounced antibacterial activities, further phytochemical and pharmacological studies will be needed to isolate the active constituents and evaluate the antimicrobial activities against a wide range of microbial pathogens.","PeriodicalId":15889,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Pharma Technology","volume":"13 1","pages":"4-11"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85881586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
