Unlike traditional Workforce Management problems such as shift scheduling, highly-skilled employees are professionally distinguishable from each other and hence non-interchangeable. Our work specifically focuses on the services industry, where much of the revenue comes from the assignment of highly professional workers. Here, non-accurate matches may result in significant monetary losses and other negative effects. We deal with very large pools of both positions and employees, where optimal decisions should be made rapidly in a dynamic environment. Since traditional Operations Research (OR) methods fail to answer this problem, we employ Constraint Programming (CP), a subfield of Artificial Intelligence with strong algorithmic foundations. Our CP model builds on new constraint propagators designed for this problem (but applicable elsewhere), as well as on information retrieval methods used for analyzing the complex text describing high-end professionals and positions. Optimatch, which is based on this technology and is being used by IBM services organizations, provides strong experimental results.","PeriodicalId":154053,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Conference on Service Operations and Logistics, and Informatics","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116618205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Business services define the way service centers interact and exchange information and assets to achieve business goals. BSC modeling offers many advantages over traditional techniques, such as reuse, simplicity, implementation autonomy, and responsiveness. On the other hand, defining and modeling business processes (BP) is a critical factor in improving business performance. We propose a top-down approach from the business level to the operational level, taking advantages of both BSC and BP approaches. Using the guidelines described in this framework, business designers can use both BSC and BP techniques to provide an end-to-end view of business operations. In a climate of constant and unpredictable change, synergy between process thinking and service center thinking becomes essential to the success of enterprises.","PeriodicalId":154053,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Conference on Service Operations and Logistics, and Informatics","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133715276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper investigates a practical approach to deploying just-in-time assistive information services on the Internet. As a preliminary exploration, the RSS technology is used to assure that the information service is up-to-date. When combined with one-time Rocchio feedback and many-times Rocchio feedback, information services can be well filtered and aggregated to meet the needs of personalization, and become more just-in-time assistive. A prototyped news service system is built to validate the applicability of the proposed methodology.","PeriodicalId":154053,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Conference on Service Operations and Logistics, and Informatics","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127889964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on formulating demand rate as a function of time, promotion and shelf-space, a joint decision model of variants selection, shelf-space allocation and inventory control is established to maximize total profits, subject to given stocking space constraints and service level constraints. Also a numerical solving algorithm for this model is given. Finally, numerical results and conclusions are presented, which show that this joint decision model could evidently increase 115 percent profit higher than the policies applied by retailer before.","PeriodicalId":154053,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Conference on Service Operations and Logistics, and Informatics","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116660363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The outbound logistics deals with the transportation and storage of finished goods from the end of the manufacturing to the customers. It is one of the most complex and expensive logistical activity and is decisive for the Quality of Service (QoS). This paper proposes the use of pre-defined Petri nets components to model and evaluate this activity. The model that represents an outbound logistics scenario is obtained with a bottom-up approach, guaranteeing some expected Petri nets properties. It is oriented towards the \"Security & safety-related services and management\" and deals more precisely with the Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA) practiced in high risk industrial fields. nuclear, chemical, military, and among others, guided transport. The PHA was developed at the beginning of the sixties in the aeronautical and military fields. Almost five decades later, the practice of the PHA remains not less problematic and completely far from any harmonization optics. Moreover, the European lawful and international normative contexts remain very pragmatic in that sense. In order to meet the ceaseless needs of generic methodologies allowing to harmonize the PHA, we consider that the divergences between the various actors are rather of a semantic nature then syntactic and that it wouldn't be enough to write and than distribute a glossary of concepts, but to model them in a dedicated ontology. Indeed, our objective is to conceive a \"systemic ontology based generic methodology\" in order to exploit efficiently the exchange of PHA know-how, of course without concession on results' coherence and completeness.","PeriodicalId":154053,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Conference on Service Operations and Logistics, and Informatics","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127366786","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
