The first one is the well-known long-term variation caused by the connection and disconnection of electrical devices. The second one is a short-time variation, synchronous to the mains, whose origin is the dependence of the impedance presented by electrical devices on the mains voltage (Canete, FJ et al., 2005). The purpose of this paper is to assess the importance of this latter aspect in actual channels. To this end, a measurement procedure able to extract these short-time variations is described at first. Afterwards, a statistical analysis of the results obtained from a measurement campaign performed at different scenarios is given. Since, powerline channel has been designed to provide electricity, using it for broadband communication various issues have to be addressed. These include channel characterization, noise, modulation to be used, coding etc. The topology of powerline network affects the transfer characteristics of the channel. In this paper, the powerline channel problems have been modeled for utilization by broadband access. These two problems are considered as multi-objective optimization problems; therefore, they are solved through different possible multi-optimization algorithms (MOA). Besides these well-known residential applications, PLC is also applicable for special systems, such as airfield lighting control and ship power distribution network. Using PLC as transmission medium to realize switching and monitoring of airfield halogen lamps and other information exchange is an efficient and safe way to accelerate telematics in aviation. Applying PLC in ship environment can support provision of traditional and novel value-added services both for operators and customers. In this paper we present a laboratory trial to investigate applicability of PLC over an airfield lighting system and an in-vivo test to evaluate the applicability of PLC linked by ship's power distribution system. The focus is put on the short-term variation that channel exhibits due to the behavior of electrical devices, which is influenced by the presence of mains voltage. Devices high-frequency parameters are time-varying and this makes the channel varies as well. To characterize this behavior it is proposed a model with an LPTV system and cyclostationary noise. In addition, examples of measurements corresponding to actual channels that illustrate these features are shown. More quantitative measurements results performed according to this channel model are presented in JA Cortes, et al. Due to their availability at any working condition power supply networks are a potential transmission medium to employ for communication. They are even ideal to provide the necessary reliability for safety critical data transmission. The present paper studies the statistical properties of this mobile time-variant communication channel. As measurements on real installations are impractically laborious and costly, we derive them from a physically motivated model of the communication channel.
