This research identifies the leadership skills and responsibilities necessary for the management of academic social work departments and examines the willingness of faculty to advance into leadership positions. The preparedness of administrators to assume such positions is also assessed. Findings indicate a willingness to serve among faculty and administrators. Faculty and academic leaders agree on the importance of a variety of leadership skills and responsibilities. Although most leaders felt they possessed good leadership skills, many reported needing five or more years to acquire the necessary leadership skills for their jobs. Additional preparation in the areas of governance policy interpretation, human resources, financial management, confronting colleagues, and resource acquisition is needed. A pretest and posttest, self-report measures, the State-Trait Anxiety Scale (Y1), and subscales of the Research Process Survey were used to track the thoughts. feelings, and actions of 111 social work research students during a fifteen-week semester. Results of paired sample t-tests revealed that although social work students experienced a decrease in negative thoughts and feelings (e.g., anxiety) about the research process, they were not satisfied with it. These findings have important implications for social work education. Helping students increase not only their positive thoughts and feelings about research but also their satisfaction level can assist with the long-term educational goal to educate social work professionals who can provide high-quality services, evaluate practice, and improve practice, policy, and social servi...","PeriodicalId":152526,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of Baccalaureate Social Work","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121789963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the social work literature cites examples of content that should be taught, there is little information on whether safety education is covered in academic programs and, if so, what exactly is taught. This study focused on nineteen baccalaureate programs and determined the extent to which they teach safety education. The study also identified the minimum safety education content that should be taught in baccalaureate social work programs.","PeriodicalId":152526,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of Baccalaureate Social Work","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130512830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, the Ho'okele model, meaning “to navigate” in the Hawaiian language, focuses on two clusters of concepts: 1) intergenerational relationships, connections, and kinship care among Pacific Islander children, parents, grandparents, and ancestors; and 2) multiple systemic living involving the individual, family, culture, community, heaven, earth, and other systems. The model can be used as a visual depiction of an individual's place in the family and community. The article proposes the integration of this model into social work education curriculum and its use in informing culturally relevant social work practice, policy, and research.","PeriodicalId":152526,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of Baccalaureate Social Work","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129469060","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
