Social work educators have historically struggled to identify learning opportunities for students in policy practice that are interesting and help reinforce its relevance to direct helping. It is imperative that new methods of policy engagement be implemented in social work curricula. This article describes an innovative model, based on an experiential statewide collaborative of all undergraduate social work education programs, to develop and assess student competency in policy practice. Evaluation results indicate that students found this model more effective in teaching about the importance of policy practice than traditional policy courses and in conveying the importance of policy to their work in the field.","PeriodicalId":152526,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of Baccalaureate Social Work","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116834394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Class attendance and timeliness can offer one opportunity to learn and demonstrate these skills. This teaching note describes the use of an attendance plan with a class of BSW students (N=17) taking a required early morning course. The attendance plan was an individualized, strengths-based intervention that prompted students to identify challenges that could result in absences and tardiness, as well as strategies and resources to mitigate the effects. The data include the content of students' attendance plans and their end-of-semester reflections about this tool. In addition to promoting attendance and professionalism, students reported that their plan helped to build rapport with the instructor and increase their sense of agency, empowerment, and collaboration. Connections to social work practice are also described.","PeriodicalId":152526,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of Baccalaureate Social Work","volume":"12 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120858829","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To meet the increasing need for qualified social work professionals, it is important to find evidence-based methods to help academically struggling social work students. Students Helping Students is a pilot program designed to increase academic and social-emotional skills of undergraduate social work students. MSW student interns delivered 12-week curricula to social work majors to improve study skills, writing skills, and reading fluency and decrease perceived stress. Pre- and posttest results were analyzed using single subject design and dependent samples t-tests. Study participants significantly improved on three of the four measures: study skills (t=−2.23, p=.046), writing skills (t=−3.15, p=.007), and stress (t=5.17, p=.001). Study participants improved, but not significantly, on reading fluency (t=−.95, p=.361).","PeriodicalId":152526,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of Baccalaureate Social Work","volume":"352 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115778533","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The strategy described here, the Power of Three, is an ethical, effective, and sustainable method for engaging undergraduate students early in their BSW careers in voter outreach. The case study described assigned BSW students the task of engaging members of the community in voting and registering a minimum of three people to vote. Findings indicate that this strategy was effective in increasing students' involvement in various voter engagement activities and increasing students' understanding of the importance of voting to social work practice.","PeriodicalId":152526,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of Baccalaureate Social Work","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127403477","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
