The RF MEMS switch, however, has not yet made it to “prime time” due to its perceived limitations in both performance (i.e. stable electrical contact resistance) and reliability (i.e. lifetime). Let me explain the perceived limitations and how I see a way forward to commercialization. First, the original specifications for RF MEMS switches were < 1dB insertion loss and >1×1012 switching cycles. I believe these specifications were originally based on using RF MEMS switches to replace transistor switches onboard satellites. Unfortunately, this original specification has become the “gold standard” for all applications. Next, the majority of RF MEMS switch researchers have primarily focused on either searching for the “holy grail” electrical contact material or on designing innovative, high contact force, mechanical switch designs (i.e. actuators). Both of these approaches are attempts to “engineer away” poor performance and reliability with either a special contact material or a better actuator. Unfortunately, most of these efforts have done little to actually improve micro-switch performance and/or reliability. As of today, I am aware of only one viable company that is pursuing the manufacture of microswitches and several companies that have gone out of business.3 There are, however, a few companies that have in-house research projects to develop micro-switches for their own products.3 I believe the way forward to commercialization MEMS switches is to first study the fundamentals of micro-contact physics and thin film metallurgy in a meaningful way. What does this mean? First, as a community MEMS switch researchers need to focus on the root causes of device failure not just avoiding failures. For example, when studying the electrical contact it should be decoupled from the mechanical switch design so that the micro-contact physics can be studied directly. The results of these fundamental studies could then be used to design micro-contacts suitable for micro-switches.","PeriodicalId":15247,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Biosensors and Bioelectronics","volume":"25 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86430200","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The recent studies have demonstrated that the abnormality due to the disease impacts the voice production system to a significant extent, researchers also studied the wide spectrum of voice pathologies.1–5 A significant deviation is observed in speaking voice due to emotions, confidence, feelings and etc.6,7 Moreover, analysis of the acoustic parameters of speaking voice can be used for understanding mental and health status.8 The focus of the paper was to compare the disease specific variations in acoustic parameter values of the speaking voice and corresponding upper respiratory diseases. Large number studies have been carried out for objective analysis of voice. But most of these studies are focused on analysing the acoustic features which are highly person specific like jitter, pitch, tone using mathematical signal processing techniques.9–11 There are various frameworks of voice signal analysis being used by researchers like for mood identification, emotion recognition, disease classification etc,12–15 however, many of frameworks that are in practice today, are based on Jitter, Shimmer, Pitch Tone which are highly user specific due to which it cannot be generalised for analysis of individuals.16","PeriodicalId":15247,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Biosensors and Bioelectronics","volume":"370 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77798106","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite of recent technological advancements, late diagnosis and poor prognosis are leading reasons for poor survival rate of cancer patients. The conventional methods, including magnetic resonance imaging, biopsy and ultrasound are not efficient for early stage cancer detection, due to their dependence on the phenotypic properties of the tumor [1]. Cancer is a multistage disease, and a complex range of genetic and epigenetic alterations which disturb the cellular signaling are associated with its onset and progression and result in tumorigenic malignancy and transformation [2]. The biomarkers are molecules which undergo important alterations during cancer and carry high clinical significance. Biomarkers may be proteins, isoenzymes, nucleic acids, metabolites or hormones and are classified as prognostic, predictive and diagnostic [3]. Diagnostic biomarkers are used for the detection of the disease, whereas the information about course of recurrence of the disease is given by prognostic biomarkers. On the other hand, the response to treatment is estimated by predictive biomarkers [4,5]. The change in the level or presence or absence of specific biomarkers in a cell often is an indication of cancer development. Cancerspecific detection and identification of these biomarkers could help in early monitoring and diagnosis of disease progression [6]. The traditional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based methods for biomarkers detection; suffer technological limitations such as consumption of expensive reagents in every assay and slow detection [7]. Also, being manual techniques, these methods are not proficient in the continuous monitoring of the patient during treatment. Besides, within the cell multiple events are associated with all cancers involving more then one molecule. Thus simultaneous detection of multiple biomarkers for correct diagnosis and prognosis is required [8,9].","PeriodicalId":15247,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Biosensors and Bioelectronics","volume":"99 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91454929","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ultimate goal is to provide a general ordered cutting method to greatly simplify the assembly process. DNA was stretched onto PMMA (Poly methyl methacrylate) coated silicon by withdrawing the substrate from a DNA solution (a process termed “combing”). The stretched lambda DNA could be linearly cut with a soft lithography stamp used to selectively apply DNase I. After cutting the DNA on the substrate, the DNA fragments are removed from the surface by incubating PMMA in the commercial NEBuffer 3.1 at 75°C. The recovered fragments desorbed into the buffer and were sequenced using the PacBio RS II sequencer without an amplification step. The mean coverage was 2870X for the approximately 11 kbp fragmented sample and 100% of the lambda genome was sequenced. Methods to extend of the technique to ordered fragmentation are discussed.","PeriodicalId":15247,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Biosensors and Bioelectronics","volume":"1 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88737647","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To meet this challenge continuing efforts have been invested to design easy, rapid, sensitive and selective biosensing platforms.1–14 However, efforts mostly remain confined to the diagnostic labs, because such diagnostics require use of expensive devices. Due to which diagnosis of infectious disease becomes costly and unaffordable to majority of population. Therefore, serious efforts are being put to device easy, rapid and cost effective methods affordable to all sectors of population. On the other hand, advances in cell phone technology especially in the area of camera and processor has provided good opportunity for integration with biosensing platform where simple, use and throw, inexpensive, rapid, sensitive, selective and reproducible biosensors could be designed and integrated to the cell phones. Integration of such point of care diagnostics to cell phones will allow accessibility of such systems to majority of population. For the successful design of Biosensor Integrated Point of Care Diagnostic Device (BIPOCD), following features will be desired: (i) Compatibility to maximum cellphone platforms, (ii) minimum intervention from user, (iii) sensitive and selective enough to provide reliable and reproducible results, and (iv) affordable cost.15 To meet these requirements, seamless integration of biosensors and cell phone is highly desired which is a very complex problem and requires detailed analysis. BICPOCD constitutes of two parts(i) Biosensing platform and (ii) Cell phone platform (Figure 1). This article will in detail cover challenges in the development of biosensor platform and to some extent cell phone platform.","PeriodicalId":15247,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Biosensors and Bioelectronics","volume":"25 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84981275","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to this history, this phrase was introduced with one of the first reports published in the twentieth century,4 at which time electrocardiography data was transmitted over telephone wires.5 Commercial equipment for the development of telemedicine in the 1960s was used by the military and space technology departments as well as private individuals.6 The use of TV to facilitate relationship between specialists at a psychiatric institute and general practitioners at a state mental hospital,7 and providing medical advice from a major teaching hospital to an airport medical center can be noted as some examples of early technological milestones in telemedicine.8 Many parameters have been described as drivers of telemedicine over the past decade, the biggest ones include recent advancements in, and increasing availability and utilization of, ICTs by the general population, rapidly creating new possibilities for health care service and delivery. Developing countries and disadvantaged areas of industrialized nations follows this.9 The use of telemedicine among health-care providers has been increased due to the replacement of analogue forms of communication with digital methods, combined with a rapid drop in the cost of ICTs. These have made health care organizations enable to imagine as a future possibility and use new and more efficient methods of providing care. The speed of the advancement of communication and information technology has increased with the introduction of the Internet, after which the telemedicine domain has expanded into web based applications and multimedia approaches. The creation of a tapestry rich in telemedicine programs is the result of these advances that can be used in various parts of the world.","PeriodicalId":15247,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Biosensors and Bioelectronics","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74903345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cardiac failure happens when the heart cannot pump enough blood and oxygen to support other organs [2]. In USA about 5.7 million adult patients are diagnosed with heart failure and one in 9 deaths in 2009 included heart failure as contributing cause [3]. The European Society of Cardiology represents countries with a population of more than 900 million, and in their last guidelines they reported that there are at least 26 million patients suffering this disease in those 51 countries [4] Heart failure is a serious condition, but it does not mean that the heart has stopped beating. At present time, cardiac transplantation remains the gold standard of cardiac replacement therapy. However, the supply of donor hearts is limited and therefore is not an option for many patients because of age and other conditions. Alternative forms of cardiac replacement therapy include cell therapy, xenotransplantation, ventricle assist devices implantation and total artificial heart. Left ventricle assist device is more and more reliable, efficient and its size is becoming smaller with technology development.","PeriodicalId":15247,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Biosensors and Bioelectronics","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78571404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, if this disease turns out to be cancerous, the situation can be quite threatening for the patient, since the manifestation of such a disease occurs with the development of the tumor to stages, when the life-time of the patient is already shortened. For example, the five-year survival rate of patients with stage IV breast cancer does not exceed 10% of the number of cases, and if breast cancer is detected in stage I, 90 to 95% of patients experience a 5-year period after surgery.1 The time from the appearance of the preclinical stage to the stage when the tumor disease manifests about three-fourths of the total time of the disease cycle before the lethal stage.2 The duration of the cycle itself is determined by the degree of malignancy of the tumor, estimated by the time of doubling cancer cells.","PeriodicalId":15247,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Biosensors and Bioelectronics","volume":"8 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83142751","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
