Reporting and data gathering applications used by ITS rely on the reliability of vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle to vehicle (V2V) communications to reach the gateways, called Road-Side Units (RSUs), in the fixed network. A key factor in the performance of this kind of applications is the adequate location of access points in the city. In this paper, we present an integer linear optimization model, employed for locating the infrastructure points in the network, considering V2I communications only for avoiding the multi-hop complexity. Our objective is to find the most valuable positions for the RSUs deployment. Simulation results carried out with NS-2 and SUMO simulation software, over a real city layout, show that the proposed model detects the best positions to locate RSUs. In particular, vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) provide scenarios where context-aware systems could be critical to enhance the performance of protocols that depend on network and traffic conditions, to detect hostile environments as well as to offer a novel way to make decisions in real-time. In this paper, we present CaSSaM, a context-aware system that combines information in a decentralized way, from the state of the communications network and the vehicular traffic, with the aim at classifying the scenario in which the VANET is operating. With information about the operation scenario, it will be possible for protocols, for example, a dissemination mechanism, to adequate its parameters with the values that work best in such a context, improving in this way the general performance of the protocol. Our initial results show the evaluation of a well-known dissemination mechanism, namely the “Slotted 1-persistence”, with different values of parameters according to different operation scenarios. Therefore, the increase and high consumption of non-renewable resources by vehicles is shocking. Which leads to the search for solutions based on vehicular energy efficiency, through the application of intelligent transport systems (ITS) that in turn provide reduce greenhouse gases (GHG). Considering that Valle del Cauca is in 4th place in the ranking of the departments with the most emissions, that more than 90% are due to the energy use of fossil fuels, this proposal presents an opportunity for mitigation actions to achieve GHG reductions, contribute to achieving vehicle transport development objectives, as well as generating economic, social and environmental co-benefits. The research problem addressed in this thesis allows us to obtain a reduction in fuel consumption can be optimized in the city of Cali, through the implementation of a Green Wave ITS application. This decrease can be verified and validated thanks to the quantification a key performance indicator such as: fuel consumption, CO2 emission, number of stops and average speed of the route, considering the type of fuel used by the vehicle. Anthracnose is combated in two ways, on the one hand, the use of highly toxic fungicides combats the disease. Nonetheless, these fungicides affect the health of farmers and consumers. On the other hand, the continuous monitoring of crop conditions prevents the appearance of the disease. However, the prevention of diseases in crops presents an incomplete implementation (i.e., lack of data processing and sending alerts to farmers). Recently, precision agriculture and decision support systems (DSS) are concepts applied to crops to improve their production. In this paper, we propose a DSS to prevent the development of anthracnose in tomato crops (DSSAT). Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools commonly used in the industry are based on different techniques such as Finite Element, Finite Differences, Moments and Mode-Matching methods. The aim of this paper is to compare the processing performance required by some of the commercially available CAD tools against an in-house software tool based on the Mode-Matching method, for the design of different structures of directional couplers with large number of ports. This disease reduces the quality of life of patients and their families due to the constant danger of sudden convulsions or loss of consciousness. Thus, it is important to have automated seizure prediction systems that alert to patients about this risk. Many methods and techniques have been proposed in the last years to address this problem. However, further research is needed to improve the efficiency and adaptability of current systems. Hence, this work analyzes several configurations for a seizure prediction system based on spectral wavelet decomposition of electroencephalogram signals. The evaluation of this systems shows that a few electrodes can predict seizures with an accuracy of 99.9% and a sensitivity of 99.8%. This paper proposes the implementation of a low cost system to identify and classify vehicles using an Embedded ARM based platform (ODROID XU-4) with Ubuntu operating system. The algorithms used are based on the Open-source library (Intel OpenCV) and implemented in Python programming language. Several operations are tested to determine the possible uses of the Android OS in an Internet of Things (IoT)’ architecture, where participative sensing is being done. In this architecture, the transmission of data is essential for analysis and visualization in a cloud platform. Hence, different types of protocols exist for the above-mentioned such as HTTPS, AMQP, and MQTT. Additionally, this paper presents the design and implementation of a participatory sensing IoT based system solution for Smart Campus applications. Our solution employs smartphone sensors, as sensors embedded into IoT devices, and the Android API to extract the data from them (e.g., GPS data).
