However, developing and emerging markets have been slow in adopting cloud technologies. We report on the results of a study on the state of adoption of cloud computing services in Ecuador. We analyze the results and identify challenges and opportunities that arise from the current state of adoption. Our results can be leveraged by cloud providers to design better strategies to increase their participation in developing and emerging markets, as well as by IT companies to better market their cloud solutions.","PeriodicalId":151973,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Colombian Conference on Communications and Computing (COLCOM)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121121407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This project has two main parts. The first is responsible of monitoring in real time of the process variables voltage, current, temperature and water level in this one, the measurements are used to do the correct current and water level control. The second part is in charge of the process variables visualization and recording on a mobile device through a app which was designed for Android OS. This two parts are comunicated by bluetooth technology which provides wide range of movement and therefore greater comfort to the user. The result of this, is a system that supplies a remote monitoring of process variables, and a recording on mobile device where the app is installed. This, for the purpose of a subsequent analysis about the behavior of the system over time, in addition, the system allows the current and water level control in the “generador flujo de electrones”.","PeriodicalId":151973,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Colombian Conference on Communications and Computing (COLCOM)","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130481644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the techniques used to build a referential compression is sequence alignment, which in turn requires a lot of computing. In this article we present UdeAlignC, a fast alignment algorithm for the compression of DNA reads. We demonstrate that our algorithm is 2× faster than prominent state of the art tools while optimality is only reduced by 5.6%. Due to its technological impact, its open source code and the possibility of installing applications from third parties without any central control, Android has recently become a malware target. Even if it includes security mechanisms, the last news about malicious activities and Android’s vulnerabilities point to the importance of continuing the development of methods and frameworks to improve its security. To prevent malware attacks, researches and developers have proposed different security solutions, applying static analysis, dynamic analysis and artificial intelligence. Indeed, data science has become a promising area in cybersecurity, since analytical models based on data allow for the discovery of insights that can help to predict malicious activities. In this article, we propose to consider Android application layer and network layer features as the basis for machine learning models that can successfully detect malware applications, using open datasets from the research community. Finally, our models show malware detection rates of 99% and 81%.","PeriodicalId":151973,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Colombian Conference on Communications and Computing (COLCOM)","volume":"298 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133794034","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The measurement campaign was conducted in an urban environment employing general purpose equipment which is commonly available in university labs. The measurement framework and experimental setup presented here are therefore easily replicable. The collected data was processed in order to obtain the relevant statistical moments of the DPS, namely the average Doppler shift and the Doppler spread. The obtained results can be used as a reference for the design and evaluation of robust transmission schemes in dedicated short range communications (DSRC) systems.","PeriodicalId":151973,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Colombian Conference on Communications and Computing (COLCOM)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125564529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The efficient and opportunistic use of the spectrum requires rapid coordination between the secondary users (SUs). Besides, future wireless networks demand even faster transmission rates, smaller end-to- end delay, and greater energy efficiency. In this work we propose two transmission strategies for SUs equipped with two radios, one of them uses both radios for data transfer while the other uses one radio for continuous detection of available channels. We evaluate the performance of the proposed strategies as a function of multiple system parameters. Our results indicate that both proposed strategies increase energy efficiency and decrease the delay between SUs. Besides, numerical results show that in scenarios with low primary activity the best choice is the strategy based on parallel transmission, while in scenarios with high primary activity the best choice is the strategy based on spectrum sensing.","PeriodicalId":151973,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Colombian Conference on Communications and Computing (COLCOM)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127098595","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes a novel unsuper- vised machine learning mechanism that consists of combining the X-Means and Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) clustering algorithms. It establishes features related to the QoS parameters for dataset composition as a way of mapping the flow information. The X- Means algorithm estimates the ideal number of clusters corre- sponding to the provided dataset. The FCM algorithm classifies all network traffic flow from their common features, allowing the system to allocate resources by following the defined order of clusters to which each traffic belongs. The proposed mecha- nism exhibits good performance for real-time video application, compared to some scheduling algorithms employed in the system.","PeriodicalId":151973,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Colombian Conference on Communications and Computing (COLCOM)","volume":"3 8","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114126855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
