Interactions Between Woolly Whiteflies and Their Parasitoid Wasp: Development, Competition, and Reproductive Potential 毛粉虱与寄生蜂的相互作用:发育、竞争和生殖潜能

We focus on the woolly whitefly, <i>Aleurothrixus floccosus</i>, and its parasitoid wasp, <i>Cales noacki</i>, used for biological control. This research is motivated by the challenges of managing whitefly populations, intensified by the limitations of pesticides and the increasing prevalence of whitefly infestations in new regions worldwide. Our findings reveal that parasitism by <i>Cales noacki</i> prolongs the development time of woolly whiteflies when the whitefly eventually overcomes the parasitoid. Wasps emerging from the fourth instar of the whitefly nymphs were larger and had higher reproductive potential than those emerging from earlier instars. We found a positive correlation between wasp size and the number of eggs in the ovary for wasps emerging from the third instar of the whitefly nymphs. However, no such correlation was found for wasps emerging from the fourth instar. Additionally, competition between whiteflies and other common pests, such as citrus mealybugs and citrus mites, seemed to hinder the emergence success of whiteflies, suggesting that multi-pest interactions could affect biological control strategies. These results demonstrate the complex life-history interactions between woolly whiteflies and their parasitoid wasps, pointing to the importance of integrating ecological considerations into pest management practices. However, a comprehensive overview of the bumblebee research field is lacking. This study delves into a bibliometric analysis of the recent 25 years of research with bumblebees from 1999 to 2024. Drawing data from 4119 publications in the Web of Science (WoS) database, it showed a steady increase in number of publications in the recent two decades. Countries in North America, Europe and China formed the three main forces. The hotspots and frontiers were related to decline and health of bumblebees, including combined effects related to climate change, agrochemicals, habitat loss and fragmentation, parasites and disease, and monotonous diets and competition. Additionally, based on co-cited references cluster analysis, it was concluded that climate change and pesticides will still be the focus research fields in the future. The mason bees <i>Osmia cornuta</i> and <i>Osmia bicornis</i> are increasingly used as alternative crop pollinators, but it is not clear how suitable these species are for fruit pollination. Here we assessed the suitability of <i>O. cornuta</i> and <i>O. bicornis</i> as managed pollinators in two cherry and four apple orchards. <i>O. cornuta</i> and <i>O. bicornis</i> were introduced in the orchards at the start of blooming. We assessed their time till emergence, nesting rate, abundance in orchards via transect walks, flower visitation rate in 20-min time counts and pollen composition on their bodies. <i>O. cornuta</i> emerged 4 ± 2 days earlier and had a minimum of 5-fold higher nesting rate than <i>O. bicornis</i> in cherry and apple orchards. Transect walks revealed that <i>O. cornuta</i> was more abundant in orchards than <i>O. bicornis</i> (21.2% ± 10.1% vs. 1.3% ± 1.8% of all observed pollinators) and more frequently observed visiting flowers (53 vs. 5 visits for <i>O. cornuta</i> and <i>O. bicornis</i>, respectively). Pollen loads of <i>O. cornuta</i> contained 95% of Rosacea plants (likely apple and cherry), whereas this was 30% for <i>O. bicornis</i>, indicating that <i>O. bicornis</i> mainly foraged outside the orchards. There are many nutrient sources in fertilisers, and different sources cause variation in plant defence and pest tolerance. Assessing how pests respond to different types of fertilisers is key to develop integrated pest management programs. Here, we assessed how two fertilisers applied to quinoa (<i>Chenopodium quinoa</i> Willd.) affected cowpea aphid (<i>Aphis craccivora</i> Koch<i>.</i>) and <i>Lygus spp.</i> survival and reproduction. Quinoa is a newly introduced crop in the USA, and fertiliser regimes using organic or synthetic nitrogen sources are being evaluated. We quantified growth and survival of each pest on organic- and synthetic-fertilised quinoa for two varieties in cages and the open field. We also quantified gene expression associated with three phytohormones involved in chemical defence to identify potential mechanisms of treatment effects. In cages, organic-fertilised quinoa had the fewest aphids and lowest <i>Lygus</i> survival. However, the effects were weaker in the open field, where aphids were marginally less abundant on organic-fertilised plants and no effects of fertiliser on <i>Lygus</i> were observed. There was also evidence for fertiliser altering defence gene expression, suggesting a possible mechanism impacting pest behaviour and fitness. Understanding how to incorporate LLIN into existing integrated pest management (IPM) programs, with other commonly used tactics like residual contact insecticides, can significantly enhance IPM programs at food facilities. In this study, we assessed whether LLIN (0.34% alpha-cypermethrin, BASF) may enhance the effects of residual contact insecticides such as Centanyl EC (Central Life Sciences), active ingredient (a.i.) deltamethrin and Evergreen (McLaughlin Gormley King Co.), a.i. natural pyrethrins against <i>Tribolium castaneum</i> and <i>Rhyzopertha dominica</i>. We recorded their dispersal and progeny production in treatments with LLIN alone, deltamethrin or pyrethrins alone, LLIN + insecticide, or no treatment (positive control). We demonstrated the use of both LLIN and residual insecticide with either deltamethrin or pyrethrins reduced adult insect dispersal to the food sources compared to the control, but only increased control of progeny production marginally by 8%–19%. LLIN alone was highly effective in reducing progeny production of <i>T. castaneum</i> by 40% compared to the positive control. Importantly, pyrethrins did not cause significant direct mortality or prevent progeny production when used alone against <i>T. castaneum</i>. However, the combined use of pyrethrins with LLIN showed an enhanced efficacy against the insect. This study includes effect of temperatures under laboratory (7°C, 12°C, 17°C, 22°C, 27°C and 32°C) and field (10°C–26°C) conditions on the life table parameters, total reactive oxygen species (ROS), hydrogen peroxide (H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>), malondialdehyde (MDA) content and activities of antioxidative [superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX)], detoxifying [acetylcholinesterase (AChE), β-glucosidase and glutathione-S-transferase (GST)] and oxidoreductive [peroxidase (POD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO)] enzymes of <i>Aphis craccivora</i> Koch and <i>A. gossypii</i> Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae) on <i>Lablab purpureus</i> subsp. <i>bengalensis</i> (Jacq.) Verdc. plants. The longevity and fecundity of both aphids were highest at 22°C, and <i>A. craccivora</i> showed similarity between 22°C and field condition but <i>A. gossypii</i> showed similarity between 17°C and field condition, suggesting that <i>A. craccivora</i> is able to withstand more fluctuating temperature stress than <i>A. gossypii</i>. Total ROS, H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> and MDA content were increased at low (7°C) or high (32°C) temperature but these parameters were more increased at high temperature than low temperature, suggesting that high-temperature stress is more harmful for both aphids. Under low (7°C) or high (32°C) temperature stress, the levels of antioxidative, detoxifying and oxidoreductive enzymes were increased in both adult aphids compared to 22°C or field condition, implicating that both these aphids are trying to detoxify excess ROS by producing more antioxidative, detoxifying and oxidoreductive enzymes. The mortality of both aphids was higher at low (7°C) and high (32°C) temperatures, implicating that both aphids could not detoxify excess ROS by the coordinated action of antioxidative, detoxifying and oxidoreductive enzymes. This clade of plants is characterised by repeated shifts between tubular kettle-trap and open non-trap flowers and chemical mimicry (of decomposing substrates or dying insects) to attract specific fly pollinators. The biology of most Stapeliinae, particularly those with non-trap flowers, remains poorly studied, hampering our understanding of the mechanisms driving diversification in this plant group. We examined the pollination biology and floral traits of <i>Ceropegia pulchellior</i>, a South African endemic with non-trap flowers confined to Natal Group Sandstone on the Durban escarpment. Observations showed that flowers are visited exclusively by flies which forage on small amounts of nectar in the corona cavities. Flowers were pollinated primarily by lauxaniid flies in the genus <i>Cestrotus</i>, although several muscid fly species also contribute. Pollinator exclusion experiments confirmed that the plants depend on these flies for reproduction. Reproductive success was low (fruit set never exceeding 8% of flowers). Pollen transfer efficiency was relatively high but variable across the flowering period. GC–MS analysis of floral scent revealed that the foetid odour is dominated by aliphatic acids and <i>p</i>-cresol with small amounts of indole, supporting the assumption that <i>C. pulchellior</i> mimics decaying substrates to selectively attract detritus-feeding (saprophagous) flies as pollinators. Analysis of spectral reflectance of flowers indicates that flower colours, when viewed by the fly pollinators, are not chromatically distinct from the habitat background, suggesting that flowers rely on olfactory rather than visual signals to attract pollinators. Its floral syndrome suggests nocturnal pollination by lepidopterans, but pollinators of this species remain unknown. Several surveys were conducted along the flowering period, and potential pollinators were captured for pollen load analyses. Additionally, pollinator surveys were performed by counting the number and identity of floral visitors in groups of 100 flowers every 2 h at nighttime. A total of 210 specimens were analysed, and the efficacy and fidelity of floral visitors were obtained. Up to 16 taxa were identified as potential pollinators, including moths, spiders, harvestmen, beetles, cockroaches and true bugs, many of which are neglected pollinators. Beetles showed higher efficacy compared with harvestmen and cockroaches, while no statistical differences were found in fidelity among groups. However, the harvestman <i>Phalangium clavipus</i> was the most frequent floral visitor. Overall, the initial hypothesis that <i>S. migjornensis</i> has a pollination specialised towards lepidopterans is not confirmed. Heat treatment is a widely available, efficient and effective method to produce phytosanitary wood products destined for trade. Defining the minimum effective heat treatment dose required to cause the mortality of insects in wood products reduces the risk of spreading pests to novel environments with the lowest possible energy cost, which in turn reduces environmental impacts and provides confidence in current guidelines for heat treatment regulations. The minimum effective heat treatment dose (time and temperature) for <i>Agrilus anxius</i> (bronze birch borer) prepupae was determined using the Humble water bath applying heat in vitro. Heat treatment was assessed using a controlled increase in temperature to simulate the heat ramp applied to wood in industrial kilns and conventional heat chamber operations. Target temperatures between 51°C and 56°C for exposure durations of 15 and 30 min were tested to determine the minimum effective dose. Prepupal <i>A. anxius</i> did not survive exposure to 53°C, 54°C, 55°C or 56°C for 30 min or 54°C and 56°C for 15 min. Chronic or delayed mortality was observed at 53°C for 15-min treatments. Recent field screenings in Austria and Germany of different faba bean varieties were encouraging as consistently the lowest viral symptom development in the variety ‘GL Sunrise’ was reported. However, our own greenhouse experiments revealed that ‘GL Sunrise’ was not resistant to PNYDV but showed a similar susceptibility such as other common varieties, for example, ‘Fuego’. Therefore, we suspected varietal host traits were affecting the reproductive potential of virus vector species with reduced virus transmission, probably explaining the empirical superior health status in the field. Under greenhouse conditions, vector-specific intrinsic rates of increase (<i>r</i><sub><i>m</i></sub>) for <i>Acyrthosiphon pisum</i> Harris <i>Aphis fabae</i> Scopoli and <i>Megoura viciae</i> Buckton were similar for both varieties, except for a particular <i>A. pisum</i>-biotype derived from field pea, with a significantly reduced <i>r</i><sub><i>m</i></sub> and fecundity in ‘GL Sunrise’. Furthermore, vector abundance assessments in multisite varietal showed <i>A. pisum</i> as the predominant species. In overall cross-year and -site evaluation, early aphid census in ‘GL Sunrise’ at growth stage BBCH 61–65 indicated significantly lower primary <i>A. pisum</i>-infestation pressure (factor 0,43 relative to ‘Fuego’). This lower infestation level in ‘GL Sunrise’ was kept until BBCH 77–79 but the difference had diminished down to the non-significant factor of 0,74 <i>A. pisum</i>-density relative to ‘Fuego’ in the late census, respectively.
