Research and industry attempt to integrate this evolving technology and the exponential growth of IoT by overcoming significant hurdles such as dynamicity, scalability, heterogeneity and end-to-end security and privacy. Motivated by the above, SEMIoTICS proposes the development of a pattern-driven framework, built upon existing IoT platforms, to enable and guarantee secure and dependable actuation and semi-autonomic behaviour in IoT/IIoT applications. Hence, in this paper, we describe the design of the SEMIoTICS architecture that addresses the aforementioned challenges. Specifically, the functional components of the proposed architecture are presented including also an overview of the appropriate realization mechanisms. Finally, we map two verticals in the areas of energy and health care and one horizontal in the areas of intelligent sensing use-cases scenarios to the suggested architecture in order to demonstrate its applicability to different IoT enabling platforms, types of smart objects, devices and networks.","PeriodicalId":149504,"journal":{"name":"2019 Global IoT Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133218348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As older adults want to age at home, sensor technology has the potential to support their choice by monitoring health status, detecting emergency situations and notifying caregivers in case of emergency situations. Moreover, using new technologies such as the Kinect sensor could bring new ways to build in-home intelligent systems, having already demonstrated performance and accuracy when monitoring older adults. The purpose of this paper is to present an application that allows healthcare providers to take care remotely of older adults by providing live monitoring of the patients. Using a Kinect sensor, the application evaluates the active life of the tracked person, determines the hydration status and notifies the caregiver if the patient is calling for help or needs an ambulance.","PeriodicalId":149504,"journal":{"name":"2019 Global IoT Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116279836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this article, we tap into this movement in order to investigate practical implications of utilizing these kinds of environments when performing IoT experiments. We have conducted in the wild research through deploying a Wi-Fi tracking infrastructure at two Danish festivals, and have performed quantitative analysis on the collected data. From running the experiments, in a non-laboratory setting, we found that hackable urban environments are interesting platforms for testing IoT technologies. Our findings also suggest that mundane aspects like access to power grids as well as availability and appearance of the build environment can have significant impact on the results of urban IoT experimentation. More generally, this suggest that cities are not hackable by default, and they need to be thoroughly designed and optimized for IoT in order to ensure successful experimentation.","PeriodicalId":149504,"journal":{"name":"2019 Global IoT Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124801374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently this interconnection has been referred to as Healthcare IoT (H-IoT). Real-time monitoring based on the information gathered from the connected ‘things’ provides large scale connectivity and a greater insight into patient care, individual habits and routines. While the benefits of introducing this paradigm into healthcare are conspicuous, the underlying security vulnerabilities and threats of the infrastructure and devices cannot go unaddressed. H-IoT is set to impact society significantly, and with attackers already exploiting the IoT in a myriad of ways, it is inevitable that the IoT will become the most vulnerable area of cyber security. Securing these ‘things’ in H-IoT requires a multi-faceted approach. A multi-agent approach to advanced persistent threat detection is conveyed with the use of machine learning for predictive analytics: identifying security vulnerabilities, identifying patterns in order to make predictions and identify outliers.","PeriodicalId":149504,"journal":{"name":"2019 Global IoT Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114578577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study focuses on developing a sustainable solution for the waste management of disposable food packaging. For the proposed solution, the designed model is an amalgam of the Internet of Things technologies together with alternative methodologies for managing in a sustainable manner the disposable food containers. Meanwhile, the solution promotes the development of localized socio-economic ecosystems for a circular economy. A blueprint has been developed based on systematic analysis of the acquired qualitative and quantitative data in addition to a pilot run in the city of Uppsala, Sweden for verifying its viability. It is found that the proposed model although tested on small scale is feasible upon consideration of the local society’s habitual gestures and peculiarities.","PeriodicalId":149504,"journal":{"name":"2019 Global IoT Summit (GIoTS)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127315366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
