It is a basic building block of all proteins and cannot be synthesized biologically in the body. The influence of vitamins, antibiotics and growth stimulators on L-lysine production by Bacillus subtilis using agricultural products as carbon and nitrogen sources was examined. The L-lysine producing bacteria had already been isolated from Nigerian soil. They were purified and Identified as B. subtilis PR13 and B. subtilis PR9, using cultural and biochemical characteristics. The of influence of vitamins, antibiotics and growth stimulators on L-lysine production by Bacillus subtilis PR13 and 9 was evaluated in 100 ml flasks containing 20 ml fermentation media (FM1 and FM2). The results obtained showed that, an enhanced lysine yield of 3.41 and 1.57 mg/ml by Bacillus subtilis PR13 and Bacillus subtilis PR9, was observed in the presence of 1 µg/ml of biotin and 10 µg/ml respectively. The supplementation of 0.04 units/ml of penicillin, enhanced optimum L-lysine yield of 2.38 mg/ml for B. subtilis PR 13 and 1.64 mg/ml for B. subtilis PR9 respectively. The addition of 0.1% w/v peptone and yeast extract, enhanced optimum L-lysine yield of 2.66 mg/ml for B. subtilis PR 13 and 1.72 mg/ml for B. subtilis PR9 respectively. There was a positive correlation between peptone and L-lysine production by B. subtilis PR13 (r= 0.85) and yeast extract and L- lysine production by B. subtilis PR9 (r= 0.54). The results obtained in the study showed that the supplementation of the fermentation media with some vitamins, antibiotics and growth stimulators enhanced the L-lysine yield of B. subtilis PR13 and B. subtilis PR9.

Three samples of soymilk were obtained from Rumuokoro Market, Rumuolumeni Market and Choba Markets. Standard microbiological techniques including the pour plate method and relevant biochemical tests were used to isolate, characterize and identify the bacteria cultures. The result of the bacteria count was high in Rumuokoro market 4.2x103 cfu/ml and lowest in Rumuolumeni market 3.4x103cfu/ml. The probable bacteria isolates identified are Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebseilla pneumonia, Salmonella spp and Streptococcus faecalis. E. coll had the highest percentage occurrence (38.18%) and klebsiella pneumonia the lowest (7.27%). The antibiotic screening showed that the gram-positive isolates S. aureus and Stretococcus faecalisare sensitive to Ampiclox (80%), (100%). Among the gram-negative isolates E. coli was most sensitive to Augumentin (71%), Klebsiella pneumonia was sensitive to Ampicilin (15%) Salmonella spp most sensitive to Streptomycin (70%). The result of this research work shows that all soymilk samples are contaminated with different bacterial species. The implication is that the quality of locally produced soymilk must be closely regulated to avoid transmission of infections to customers. It is also critical that local producers are educated on good manufacturing practices.

These diseases are caused by the consumption of dangerous meals usually prepared by unskilled actors. This study aims to identify the shortcomings related to the lack of qualification of those involved in the catering industry and the causes of CFP, by specifically determining their levels: behaviour, qualification, risk in CFP outbreaks, bacteriological contamination of surfaces and food to which students are exposed. To do this, a questionnaire was developed and a team of investigators was formed. From 2012 to 2017, a retrospective survey was conducted. The choice of targets focused on students, restaurateurs, food vendors, residence chefs and medical workers. A system has been set up for the collection and analysis of food samples (processed fish, hot meals, unpasteurized juices and sandwiches) and surfaces (trays and hands of divers and waitresses) at the UCAD ESEA restaurant under aseptic conditions. Data processing was carried out using an Excel spreadsheet and XLStat software. We have respectively in University Restaurants, University Residences, Fast Foods and Outdoor Restaurants: (17.47; 43.24; 22.21 and 17.08), (21.05; 33.05; 14.02 and 31.88) and (65.4; 21.16; 10.96 and 2.48) for the level of actors' behaviour, qualification and percentage risk. The level of contamination of trays, divers, waitresses, processed fish, meals, unpasteurized juice and sandwiches is 50%, 48%, 55%, 74%, 100%, 94% and 91.5% respectively. In the analysis of these results, it can be said that some causes of CFP are related to the lack of qualification of the staff and therefore, the training of these actors is a priority on these university campuses. To ensure safe meals and student safety, highly qualified staff must be recruited and continuously trained in good hygiene practices and HACCP.

This situation was heavily influenced by several factors ranging from the harvesting environment to the dining table. \u0000Aim: This study aimed at assessing the bacteriological quality of smoked fish in three (3) major fish processing communities in the Yeji-Pru East District, Ghana. \u0000Study design: The study was a comparative cross-sectional design to explore bacteria species occurrence and abundance (loads) of smoked fish in Yeji-Pru East District, Ghana. It also was directed towards determining the characteristics of the situation as it existed during the period of the study, from June to December 2017. \u0000Method: A closed-ended structured questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic data from 20 owners of the fish processing site. Forty-eight smoked fish samples including; Oncorhynchus sp., Clupea harengus, Chrysichthys auratus and Oreochromis niloticus were surface sterilised, rinsed and dried at 45°C for 24 hours. Ten grams of each fish sample were diluted with 10 ml of Buffered Peptone Water. Further dilution was prepared using 5 ml of the same diluent. The prepared samples were made to settle for isolations and later inoculated on MacConkey Agar, Shigella-Salmonella Agar, and Salt Mannitol Agar. Microbial colonies were then enumerated using the pour plate method. Data collected were analysed using Microsoft Excel, SPSS and Interactive Chi-square Test at a test significance of 5%. \u0000Results: The results showed absence of Salmonella and Shigella in all fish samples studied. However, it revealed the presence of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus species at a rate of 79.2 (n= 38) and 89.6% (n= 43), respectively. The microbial load for E. coli and Staphylococcus species were community specific. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference (p < 0.05) between the microbial loads in fish samples obtained at each study site. However, there was no spatial variation in the mean microbial abundances of each selected sample (p > 0.05). The bacteria load observed were lower than the permissible level for human consumption authorised by both the Ghana Standards Authority and the International Commission on Microbiological Specifications for Foods. \u0000Conclusion: The study showed that the pre-smoking and post-smoking activities along the fish processing chain could affect the microbial load and diversity. Therefore, the adoption of a good processing practice was highly advocated.

The site of study has been reported to be densely polluted with heavy metals as a result of dumping used electronic wastes into the water body. \u0000Aim: This study was carried out to determine the biosorption potentials of indigenous fungi isolates in reducing heavy metal present in electronic wastes polluted water body. \u0000Study Design: This was a laboratory based study. \u0000Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted at the Microbial Resources Research Laboratory, Department of Pure and Applied Biology, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Ogbomoso, Nigeria from July 2021 to June 2022. \u0000Methodology: Heavy metal polluted water sample was collected near the dumpsite of e-waste in Alaba International market, Lagos Nigeria. Fungi were isolated from the polluted water sample by carrying out serial dilution. Pure colonies were obtained and stored at 4°C. Media formulations (MF) trials for the biosorption process was achieved using brewery waste and honeycomb extracts. Exactly 200 ml of MF were dispensed into a 500 ml Elmeryer flask containing 100 ml of the e-waste polluted water and fugal discs. Atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used to determine the heavy metal concentration in the water samples. The biological interactions of the fungi with the polluted water sample was monitored using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The pH, electrical conductivity and other physicochemical parameters were also determined. \u0000Results: Trichoderma harzianum, T. viride, Fusarium oxysporum, Aspergillus flavus and A. niger were isolated from the heavy metal polluted water samples. Heavy metal such as Pb (13.30 mg/L), Cd (16.50 mg/L), Cr (6.41 mg/L), Ni (3.81 mg/L), Zn (8.85 mg/L), Cu (8.33 mg/L), Fe (5.60 mg/L) had values which were higher than the acceptable limits. Biosorption efficiency of each of the fungus in reducing the metals present in the sample was in the increasing order of A. niger<A. flavus<F. oxysporum<T. viride<T. harzianum. FTIR showed that some peaks were shifted to lower wavenumber as a result of the interactions of the fungus with the heavy metal in the water sample. This study revealed that T. harzianum had the highest biosorption efficiency for the removal of heavy metal in the polluted water sample. \u0000Conclusion: It is essential that heavy metals be removed from polluted water body to avoid its deleterious effects on public health. Attitudes towards HPV vaccination were overall positive. 71.9% participants were sexually active, most of whom only used condoms sometimes (47.2%). \u0000Conclusion: These findings underscore the need for educational programs and public health policies targeted to this age bracket, to increase students’ awareness of the risks associated with HPV infection as this can potentially increase the vaccination rate in the country.

A vast majority of females nowadays apply makeups in order to enhance their facial looks. Repetitive use and sharing of the makeup brushes by different customers may become a potential pathway for microbial pathogens spread. The major goal of this study was to isolate and identify microbial contaminants of makeup brushes from students within Rivers State University and its environs. And also determine the antimicrobial sensitivity of the isolated microorganisms to different antimicrobial agents. Eighty (80) samples of makeup brushes were collected from different hostels, personal houses, and beauty salons and were cultured by inoculating them into different culture media as Nutrient, Blood and Sabouraud Dextrose agar to isolate bacteria and fungi respectively. The identification of isolated bacteria was confirmed by using pure culture of the isolates, Gram stain, and biochemical tests which were catalase, coagulase, and others including germ tube tests. The sensitivity test of the isolated bacteria to different antibiotics was carried out using the Optodisc diffusion method. The microorganisms isolated and identified were Staphylococcus epidermidis (55%), Staphylococcus aureus (22.5%), and Candida albicans (22.5%). The isolated bacteria were susceptible to Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin and Gentamycin. The findings of this study have shown that both Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus were isolated as bacteria, while Candida albicans as fungi from makeup brushes. Staphylococcus epidermidis are considered as normal skin flora whereas, Staphylococcus aureus could be pathogenic and present as source of infecting bacteria. It could be concluded that it is possible to isolate bacteria and fungi that may be pathogenic from makeup brushes, that may act as source of infecting pathogens therefore increases the risk of infection and public health concern.
