The samples were collected from 5 different dumpsites and 10 meters away using the plate sedimentation method. Petri dishes containing culture media were used as sampling surfaces. The sampled media were incubated at 37oC and 30oC for bacteria and fungi respectively. The isolates from the culture were subcultured and identified by biochemical test methods. The multidrug resistance sensitivity of the isolates was determined by Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method and multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) index was determined. The total heterotrophic bacterial count of the dumpsites ranged from 1.43×103CFU/m3 to 5.8×104CFU/m3. The total heterotrophic fungal count of the dumpsites ranged from 1.06×103CFU/m3 to 2.3×103CFU/m3. The different bacteria identified were Bacillus sp, Micrococcus sp, Pseudomonas sp, Serratia sp, Staphylococcus sp. The fungi, Aspergillus niger, Saccharomyces sp, Fusarium sp, Aspergillus flavus, Candida albican, Penicillium sp and Mucor sp, Rhodotorula sp, A. fumigatus were identified. The antibiotic sensitivity study showed that 100% of the Gram-positive isolates were resistant to Augmentin, cefuroxime, 66.6% were resistant to cefotaxime, 50% were resistant to ceftriaxone, sulbatam, 33.3% were resistant to cefexime and erythromycin while 16.66 of the Gram-positive bacteria were resistant to, levofloxacin, gentamycin, ofloxacin, imipenem and cefotaxime. For the Gram-negative bacteria, 83.3 were resistant to ampiclox, cefuroxime, levofloxacin, 66.6% were resistant to cefexime, 50% were resistant to augmentin, cefotaxime, 33.3% were resistant to imipenem, gentamycin, nitrofurantoin, 16% were resistant to ceftraxime and all (100%) the bacterial isolates were sensitive to nalidixic acid. The study revealed that the dumpsite had impact on both the microbial load and quality of the environment. The microorganisms identified could contain pathogenic sp and impact on human health especially the immune-compromised. Also, the microbial load of the air around the dumpsites decreased with increase in distance from the dump sites. The presence of multidrug resistant isolates could be of public health concerns.

A recurrent concern is providing blood components that are free from bacterial contamination. Bacterial and fungal contamination of blood products is nowadays a major apprehension when it comes to transfusion adverse events. Over the years, several disinfection products and protocols have been devised to mitigate the risks of such contaminants, nonetheless, sepsis is still the leading cause of transfusion reaction fatalities. This fact raises the question of whether disinfection on its own is sufficient for preventing such outcomes.

Food, although not sterile, must have the number of microbes present falling within the acceptable limit as prescribed by the World Health Organization and other regulatory bodies. Street-vended food and drinks are still a thriving industry in the majority of developing nations, providing most urban people with their daily meals. This study sought to investigate the microbial load of some locally made street vended drinks including sorrel drink (‘Sobolo’) made from Hibiscus sabdariffa, ‘Brukina’, (a Ghanaian drink made of ground millet and pasteurized milk), ‘Emuduro’ (a natural ginger drink), ‘Abele’ (Ghanaian ice cream) and ‘Asaana’ (caramelized corn drink). Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: In and around Kumasi Technical University campus, Kumasi-Ghana between January 2023 to March 2023. Methodology: Twenty-one (21) samples of local drinks were sampled randomly from various vendors aseptically and sent to the laboratory immediately for microbiological analysis. The standard plate count method and identification tests were used to determine the total aerobic count and identify microorganisms present respectively. Results: The study recorded a high microbial load in the samples collected. ‘‘Emuduro’’ was the most contaminated with an average viable count of 4.5 x 107 cfu/mL. ‘Asaana’ had the least contamination with an average viable count of 2.4 x 105 cfu/mL which fell still out of the tolerable limit of ≤ 105cfu/mL. ‘Sobolo’, ‘Brukina’, and ‘Abele’ had counts of 4.1 x 107 cfu/mL, 1.4 x 106 cfu/mL, and 1.3 x 106cfu/mL respectively which are unacceptable. Pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus spp., Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Pseudomonas spp., and Enterobacter spp. were identified from the samples. The high microbial load in most of the samples may result from the use of unhygienic water, insanitary surroundings and equipment, and prolonged refrigeration Conclusion: The study revealed that street-vended locally made drinks can be harmful to people and may cause various food-borne illnesses.

The organism was confirmed Pseudmonas aeruginosa using molecular typing (PCR and sequencing). Lipase producing capability of the organisms was screened in an optimized culture broth in the presence of p-NPP. Yellow coloration of the broth confirms the exo-lipase secretory of the bacteria. Lipase production peaked on day 5 of the fermentation; pH 7 was best for the lipase production. 60% ammonium sulphate was used in precipitation of proteins with peak lipase activity. Protein was dialyzed against gradient (0.01/0.1M) for 12 hrs for salt removal. Native sephadex G100 was used in separation of the dialysate into sizes and weight; fraction tubes of 16-25 were recorded as the elution volume of the chromatogram (VE). pH 4.5 and 60°C were characteristics of the purified protein where as Michaelis-Menten and velocity maximal (Km and Vmax) were 3.45mg/ml and 275 µmole/min. Pseudmonas aeruginosa seen from the study as a competitive bacteria for prolific lipase production to meet with the current biotechnological demand of the next generational enzyme.

The evaluation studies carried out in Senegal have been limited to children on first-line ART. The main objective of our study was to evaluate the efficacy of second-line ART. \u0000Methodology: Data were collected at 3 different sites. This was a retrospective, longitudinal and analytical study, conducted from March 4 to August 28, 2015. The study population consisted of 65 HIV1-infected children. BD FACSCountTM Flow Cytometer for TCD4 lymphocyte counting. For genotyping, 2 sets of PCRs were required. Data were entered and analysed using Word/Excel 2013 and Epi-info7 software. \u0000Results: We had 43 boys and 22 girls, giving a sex ratio of 1.95. The extreme ages were 5 and 15 years, and the mean age was 11.43 years. The majority belonged to stage 4 and 2 of the WHO classification. The clinical evolution was favourable in 86.15%, unfavourable in 3.07% and unspecified in 10.76%. We found 9 genotypes and recombinant forms; 80% of the strains were sequenced. \u0000Discussion: The general aim of ART is the same as in adults. Clinical stages were not specified in 15.38% of cases. In total, 58.46% had an excellent immunovirological response. We conclude from this that a good IR doesn’t mean a good immunovirological evolution. Initiation of ART should be guided by genotyping. \u0000Conclusion-Recommendations: ART reduced morbidity and mortality. Our study showed a virological failure rate of 21.53% and an IR rate of 86.15%.

In humans they usually cause localized cutaneous infections namely erysipeloid, occasionally becomes diffuse and may lead to septicemia and endocarditis in opportunistic immunocompromised individuals. The growing and evolving disease spectrum of this organism in human beings is a potential future threat. This case report addresses a common disease manifestation with this unusual organism which is needs to be highlighted. Presentation of Case: Herein we report a case of 1year 9month old immunocompetent male child belonging to a shepherd family who presented with long standing left sided pleural effusion. Pleural fluid culture yielded Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae. Despite a culture sensitive antibiotic therapy a sequelae of residual effusion with subpleural collapse and fibrous septations developed, hence left lateral thoracotomy along with decortication surgery was performed. Discussion: This case report highlights the drug sensitivity and resistance pattern in detail and also points out the prognosis and possible sequelae of the disease which in turn can increase treatment awareness regarding the organism. Conclusion: Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is an unusual organism which was found in our patient causing pleural effusion is a very unlikely coalition and needs a separate mention as this emerging microbe can be a cause of concern due to its novelty and scarce medical evidence.

Similarly, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus JL11, five strains of Alcaligenes faecalis, seven strains of Bacillus spp., Enterobacter cloacae, Falsochrobactrum ovis, Ochrobactrum ciceri, Providencia stuartii including two species of Pseudomonas and Bordetella trematum were all phenotypically identified as Corynebacterium kutsceri. Invariably, Alcaligenes faecalis (strains PSD10 and DEP8), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (H47921) and Vagococcus fluvialis (AWW1) were identified as Staphylococcus species. All 34 bacterial isolates expressed phaC genes for PHA potential, while Alcaligenes faecalis strains and Bacillus humi (NBPP9) expressed phaC1 for short PHA chain. \u0000Conclusion: This study established variations in the genetical identity of Corynebacterium kutsceri, Enterobacter amnigenus, Micrococcus luteus, Micrococcus varians, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus saprophyticus when compared with the phenotypic identification methods. But, there was synchronization in the genotypic and phenotypic identity of bacillus species. Records of varietal differences of PHA potential were also obtained from same species in this research. It is therefore pertinent to rely on the genetic identification of bacteria for the effective determination of PHA-producing character as displayed in Bacillus spp.

This work aimed to study the potential pathogenicity of Escherichia coli strains isolated from the stools of children suffering from diarrhea and healthy from 0 to 15 years old admitted to hospitals in southern Benin. \u0000Methodology: The isolation and characterization of the strains were carried out according to standard microbiology methods. Molecular characterization was carried out by searching for eight virulence factors (Stx1, Stx2, eaeA, bfpB, LT, InVE, IpaH, AggR) and three antibiotic resistance genes (blaTEM, blaSHV, blaCTX -M) by the PCR technique. \u0000Results: This study shows that 47.06% of the children sampled suffered from diarrhea, against 52.94% who were healthy. A total of 9 species of Enterobacteriaceae were identified in different proportions: Escherichia coli (66.66%), Klebsiella ornithinolytica (13.72%), Klebsiella pneumonia (5.88%), Enterobacter aerogenes (3.92%), Escherichia vulneris (1.96%), Salmonella arizonae (1.96%), Salmonella spp (1.96%), Enterobacter sakazakii (1.96%), Serratia fonticola (1.96%). All E. coli showed total resistance to amoxicillin, ceftazidime, and cefotaxime. In addition, they showed variable resistance to norfloxacin (95.33%), trimethoprim (83.33%), and sulfamethoxazole (95.24%). 70.83% of E. coli strains isolated from apparently healthy children carry resistance genes blaTEM (12.5%), blaSHV (25%), and blaCTX-M (33.33%). While 66.67% of strains of E. coli isolated from children with diarrhea carry resistance genes blaTEM (12.5%), blaSHV (37.5%), and blaCTX-M (16.67%). Only EPEC was isolated and only in diarrheal children, with a frequency of 20.83%. \u0000Conclusion: The relatively high prevalence of ECD in this study is remarkable, and it highlights the fact that E. coli is an important agent of infectious diarrhea and could be the leading cause of gastroenteritis in Benin.

M. citrifolia fruit, leaf, and stem contain phytochemicals including alkaloids, phenols, flavonoids, and glycosides. Extracts of the three plant parts were obtained by maceration method using ethanol, and prepared in concentrations of 100%, 75%, 50% and 25%. The scalps of 6 individuals were swabbed to obtain a sample of M. globosa. The susceptibility of M. globosa to M. citrifolia extracts was tested in triplicate using the disc diffusion method, and a measure of the extent of susceptibility was ascertained by the size of the inhibition zones. It was found that of the 3 extracts, noni fruit showed the highest inhibitory effect with 20/48 discs having inhibition zones, noni stem showed moderate inhibition with 12/48 inhibition zones, while noni leaf exhibited no inhibition zones, indicating its lack of inhibitory effect against M. globosa. Notably, noni fruit at 100% and 75% concentrations proved to be most effective against M. globosa, and at 25% concentrations, noni stem was most effective. However, statistical analysis using both ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis tests indicated that the observed data was insignificant since the p-values were > 0.05. It can therefore be concluded that noni fruit, leaf, and stem extracts have little to no significant inhibitory effect on the growth of M. globosa, notwithstanding, a change in various experimental factors including agar type and extract preparation may prove otherwise.
