The main reasons are discussed and an efficiency analysis of a 3-phase induction motor, commonly used in industry, presented to compare such motors' nominal and actual efficiencies. Based on the difference between nominal and actual efficiency, energy loss is calculated for a particular motor. Conclusions about how energy savings depend on operating efficiency of induction motors are made and possible ways of increasing actual efficiency of induction motors provided.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132647784","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The generation of electricity to meet the demand in these sectors is primarily derived from the coal thermal power plant. The goal of Eskom is to sustain the demand and equally reduce environmental pollution. Eskom has embarked on energy efficiency initiatives on their coal boiler plant in a bid to decrease the amount of coal burnt and in turn increase the electricity generated. The study focused on the analysis of the before and after outage data obtained from the unit cards in one of the Eskom's “once through” 600 MW coal boiler with a mechanical conversion efficiency of 35 % (from manufacturer specification). Multiple linear regression models were developed and built to predict the power generated and sent out in correlation with the predictors (average air heater temperature, average main stream super heater temperature, average high pressure heater temperature, the total mass of coal burnt, auxiliary power consumption, average of the cold well and hot well condenser temperature and pressure). The data obtained 3 months before and after an outage showed an average power generated of 434.95 MW and 502.08 MW respectively. The results also revealed that the cumulative energy gained was 44000 MWh. Finally, the reliefF algorithm ranked all predictors as primary factors with the high pressure heater and main stream super heater temperatures contributing the most by virtue of the weight of importance to the power generated.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"118 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124152300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Stakeholders in the South African energy industry still need to overcome many barriers in order to improve operational efficiency. One such barrier is incorporating independent measurement and verification (M&V) into core ESCo processes. Dedicated M&V teams provide objective and independent quantification of energy savings stemming from the implemented interventions. Despite the importance of the M&V function, the process is often neglected by ESCos. This neglect can potentially delay critical project milestones. Incorporating the M&V process into the ESCo business model introduces its own challenges. Streamlining the management of the process is important to maximise the benefits without placing additional strain on existing resources. This article investigates the workings of the M&V process and how it can be integrated into an ESCo's business processes. Operational data is collected, processed and analysed to identify critical areas. A guideline to integrating the process into the general framework of an ESCo business is then developed. The article also presents a case study where the analysis and implementation is performed on an ESCo based in South Africa. The findings of the case study underline important improvements based on measured performance indicators.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128012974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The existing battery technologies that can be utilized for autonomous systems are plagued by short-life, low energy storage density, associated unwanted maintenance burdens of recharging or replacement and disposal of unwanted batteries which poses a threat to the environment. Autonomous energy sources from waste heat for home appliances and industrial machineries will also mitigate the effect of global warming which threatens the environment as a result of fossil fuel energy based sources that release undesirable carbon-monoxide into the atmosphere. Thermoelectric energy generation, based on Seebeck effect, an innovative approach to convert heat energy into usable forms can significantly contribute towards sustainable energy development and meet the growing need for power in small scale applications due to its relative advantages over other sources of energy generation. This paper presents an insight into various ways by which underutilize waste heat can be exploited to meet the growing energy demand. While there is growing concern for generation of `clean' energy, and it is a relief that there is a large amount of underutilise or waste heat capable of generating `clean' energy.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123283541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

About 600 000t/a is produced, against a demand of the order of 350 000t/a plus an export demand of about 150 000t/a, with the balance being consumed by the refineries themselves. Imports are slowly growing as the facilities for coastal storage are created, but these facilities are small so that the cost of imports is unduly high. There are five major wholesalers in the market, and several smaller players who have entered the scene recently. Distribution is not particularly efficient, and the product effectively doubles in price between the refinery gate and the retailer. There seems to be a degree of anticompetitive behaviour in the market, where companies use the need to ensure proper handling of their gas cylinders to restrict entry. The Department of Energy has long has a policy to encourage the wider use of LP gas, but the lack of supply has limited the Department's effectiveness in pursuing its policy. More widespread use is also hindered by local fire regulations, as lack of familiarity with LP gas leads to over-estimation of the hazards associated with its use. If the supply constraint were to be removed, there seems little doubt that LP gas would find wider use in South Africa.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126886530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditionally, the power generated and consumed due to harmonics is ignored in overall efficiency studies. However, in the modern world, power systems contain levels of harmonics which can no longer be ignored. In this paper, five case studies that increase the number of harmonic sources (Adjustable Speed Drives) from one to five are conducted. A computer based simulation methodology is developed for overall efficiency analysis using the DIgSILENT software package. The grid was assumed as sinusoidal source as DIgSILENT software package cannot perform the efficiency investigation using a non-sinusoidal source. Investigations were conducted at full and half-loads. An example on the application of the new formula and the results of the case studies analyzed are also included in this paper. The developed formula and methodology was found to be effective and its use is recommended.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131456991","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When compared with other sources of renewable energy in the energy portfolio, it becomes evident that the bulk is wind energy-based. However, there are some backlogs to full manifestation of this technology ranging from initial high cost to performance and reliability issues, among others. But in spite of these bottlenecks, new research trends have been assertive in seeking out a sustainable solution for harnessing wind energy for power generation - especially in the design and construction of wind generators. In order to motivate and prime a sustainable energy mix among stakeholders, this paper is a shot at appraising the theory of these innovative wind generators towards ecological sustainability, economy, efficiency, and employment creation.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128649134","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the light of evidence that the basis for the original IRP was too rigid, the Update is far more flexible in its approach. It has examined a wider range of scenarios. It has abandoned multi-criterion decision analysis, which had been the subject of much criticism on grounds of subjectivity, in favour of developing “a proposed path of least regret, incorporating the benefits of flexibility, and identify(ing) decision trees that consider the key determinants in decisions required and the proposed solutions under different outcomes of these determinants.” However, it appears to suffer from a fatal flaw, namely that by focusing on capacity and the ability to meet the peak demand, it has overlooked the need to provide adequate energy to meet the day-to-day demands. The data provided in the Update are reinterpreted in terms of annual energy produced, and it is shown that each of the four primary scenarios which were considered leads in a drastic drop in the energy margin after 2020. Under some perfectly credible assumptions, the energy margin becomes negative in the mid-2020's. Because this is within the short-term planning horizon for the provision of power, it strongly suggests that decisions must be taken immediately to introduce at least another 500MW of generating capacity every year from 2018 to 2027. Failure to address this urgently means that our electricity supply will revert to a critical state in under ten years.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117064962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Large industries are therefore willing participants in the Eskom funded electricity savings programme that hold benefits for all parties. One such industry is the mining sector. The refrigeration and pumping systems used in these sectors are two of the major electricity consumers. As part of DSM initiative, an electrical energy savings project was developed and implemented in the deep mines' chilled water systems. The chilled water system is optimally controlled to reduce underground water usage during certain periods of the day. This ensures that less water is pumped out by the dewatering system, reducing electrical energy usage on the pumps. The study showed that there are positive and negative effects on the mining systems with reduced chilled water use. The financial and thermal impact was determined and compared to the average annual system's cooling output. In some cases the cooling system components showed a combined decrease in cooling effectiveness of 3 to 4 percent of the total average annual cooling output, but also resulted in electrical energy savings.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115942115","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
