This includes the electricity generation sector. This dilemma has caused electricity providers to revise their generation methods and created a major need for consumers to utilise electricity more efficiently. Demand Side Management (DSM) is one initiative developed for consumers to efficiently utilise electricity. Due to their high electricity consumption and availability of technical skills, mines are ideal targets for the implementation of DSM strategies. Therefore, the focus of this study was to investigate the possible implementation of DSM strategies on the compressed air networks of South African mines. The compressed air networks at South African mines are relatively old and inadequately maintained. This causes inefficient distribution and use of compressed air. This study will therefore focus on reconfiguring a mining compressed air network for electricity cost savings. Reconfiguring this network would entail interconnecting two shafts with a pipeline in order to distribute compressed air from one shaft to another. This proposed reconfiguring initiative was approved and implemented on a South African mine's compressed air network. The results concluded that electricity cost savings can be achieved by reconfiguring mining compressed air networks.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115543519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To enable load shifting on mine dewatering pumps, preparation before and recovery after peak TOU is needed for effective results. This induces a preparation- and comeback load in the standard TOU. With an annual increase in TOU tariffs and the rate of increase of standard TOU being greater than that of the peak TOU, a reduction in electrical energy consumption before and after peak TOU is needed. To enable this, a step-by-step control technique was developed to promote the shifting of load from standard-to off-peak TOU, while still realising a full load shift from peak TOU. This technique entails dynamic control ranges of underground dam levels as opposed to the conventional constant control range method. Control range upper and lower bounds were optimised through the formulation and application of equations taking into account various system parameters. Two case studies were used to test the developed technique. Results indicated significant additional financial savings when compared to conventional control methods. Additional savings of R 1,096,056.65 and R 579,394.27 per annum were respectively achieved for both case studies.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122966483","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition to this, industries that are supplied through municipalities have to cope with additional service costs of up to 20%. These consumers are therefore compelled to find new ways of saving electricity. Further, in order to decrease the country's peak electrical load profile, Eskom has implemented different tariff structures. These are designed for various different electricity consumption conditions. Customers therefore need to integrate and simulate their power consumption with their production forecasts in order to decide on the best tariff structure and operation of the plant. Different tariff structures have different advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, a clear understanding of these tariffs is necessary before a tariff structure is chosen. As part of this study, a case study was done on a processing plant. This study analysed the Demand Side Management (DSM) strategy as well as the selection of the best tariff structure for maximum savings. The optimum simulated operational plan together with tariff structure changes were implemented successfully. The case study proved that cost savings were also achieved despite a variation in the production.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130662793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A need to extend its application increased with the dwindling natural resources used for power generation and also exceeding energy demand, hence more efficient motor systems and power usage are required at the forefront of utility's demand side management system. The aim is to design and build an active PFC using a boost DC/DC converter and implement it on a single phase induction motor for residential and small industrial applications. However it can be developed to a three phase system for bigger industrial applications. The basic architecture includes a power supply, a rectifier, DC/DC boost converter (for the system with PFC), an inverter, control circuitry, and a single split phase induction motor. The energy usage of the motor without PFC is recorded and compared with energy of a motor with PFC. The cost analysis of the two energy usage is compared and the objective is to realise some savings. This paper discusses system design, influence of the PFC on the system's power consumption and power factor, comparing the results between two systems, and cost evaluation.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134303621","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This investigation involves the use of a universal estimator (Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS)) for middle income lighting load usage profile development, prediction and evaluation) for energy and demand side management initiatives. Natural light, Occupancy (active) and Income level are the three factors considered in this study. Trapezium membership function was applied during the training process of the ANFIS model due to historical light usage pattern (time of use) data. The result obtained after validation of the developed model using the investigative data showed a better correlation of fit and root mean square error in comparison with the regression model. The developed approach has the ability to give better lighting prediction accuracy in relation to non-linearity data and behavioural tendencies.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114272139","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, energy performance monitoring is an essential component of many modern businesses. Consumers must manage energy resources sparingly. However, managing the large datasets associated with large-scale operations can often become overwhelming. This creates the need for a simplified approach to performance monitoring. Energy monitoring and reporting systems have been created to address the requirements of specific applications such as DSM performance tracking. However, a more generic approach is required in order to include a comprehensive collection of energy data for additional applications. In this paper a generic data management solution is discussed. The system gathers a wide range of energy data suitable to address the needs of a variety of applications. Reports are compiled according to organisational levels. This ensures timely delivery of relevant reports to personnel at different organisational levels. Various features of the proposed improved performance monitoring system are described. Additionally, a case study on a DSM project demonstrates the implementation and use of the system. It was possible to improve the performance of the project after identifying and modifying its inefficient control philosophy.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121435281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One way is by implementing demand side management (DSM) projects. Energy saving priorities focused mainly on mines with large energy consumption and long “life-of-mine”. If paybacks are short enough, it should be a feasible investment to implement DSM projects. This could extend the “life-of-mine” of marginal mines. To assist with investigations, procedures are introduced to estimate the potential savings and required capital costs. These procedures were developed by analysing previous projects implemented by the CRCED PTA research group. Energy cost savings strategies are proposed for the dewatering-, refrigeration- and water distribution systems. A case study is used to show the benefit of the proposed procedures. Since capital investment on marginal mines is limited, breakdowns and equipment failures may be frequent. This may negatively influence saving and project paybacks.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128140968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most compressed air networks are designed to ensure ample compressed air supply to consumers. This has created the foundation for existing compressed air energy saving projects on deep level mines. Over the past decade, electricity costs in South Africa increased drastically. As a result, the need to further improve and optimise existing Demand Side Management (DSM) projects with modern technology and expertise has become more feasible. This study therefore provides and evaluates a solution to reduce the electricity consumption and operating costs of a compressed air system on a deep level mine. This was achieved by modernising and improving an existing underground compressed air DSM project. It was found that the improvements realised significant additional electrical energy savings. This resulted in ample cost savings to justify the implementation of the improvements.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122696063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Benson's boilers are used in Eskom's coal thermal power plant. A simulation application was designed and built in the Simulink environment to compute both the generated and sent out power profiles using various mathematical models developed and embedded in the simulation, architectural algorithm to forecast the dynamic behaviour of the real plant using the predictors. All predictors were loaded in the source blocks while the predicted outputs displayed in the sink blocks in the Simulink environment. The predictors used in these models, included air heater temperature, main stream super heater temperature, high pressure heater temperature, cold well and hot well condenser temperatures and pressures, the total mass of coal burnt and auxiliary power consumption. Multiple linear regression models were developed and built from the before and after an outage generated and sent out power profiles using six months analyzed data from one unit of the Eskom's Benson boiler rated 600 MW in each of the scenarios. Modeling electrical networks with Object Oriented data structures for smart control 面向对象数据结构的智能控制电气网络建模

{"title":"Modeling electrical networks with Object Oriented data structures for smart control","authors":"T. Ustun","doi":"10.1109/ICUE.2014.6904204","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ICUE.2014.6904204","url":null,"abstract":"The electrical networks are becoming more complex with the introduction of distributed generators; power electronics based control devices and various types of loads. The electrical networks are no longer passive meshed systems, as they were a couple decades ago. Rather the generation, transmission and consumption co-exist almost at all levels of the electrical networks. With the increasing number of control parameters the management, protection and control of these electrical networks become a real challenge for power engineers. Furthermore, several loads and/or distributed generators may connect/disconnect from/to the network at any time. Therefore, the shape of the network is not fixed but variable. Power flow, power quality calculations as well as protection parameters such as relay settings, fault current settings etc. require that the exact structure of an electrical network should be monitored. This can be achieved by making use of communication lines in a central management system. In this paper, the electrical nodes such as relays, generators and loads are represented with Object Oriented (OO) data structures to model microgrids with graph theory. Dijkstra's algorithm is implemented to monitor the changes in the network and recognize new deployments. In this manner, the exact structure of the network can be monitored without central management and necessary adjustments can be made on the fly. The simulation of the proposed model shows the viability of such model and its effectiveness.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115741103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
