This paper explains research into an advanced air source heat pump drying (ASHPD) system, designed, manufactured and installed for drying South African fruit and taking into account local climactic conditions. The effect of ambient temperature and condenser fan speed on the coefficient of performance (COP) of the heat pump (HP) was evaluated, also the influence of drying temperature and air velocity analysed. Using banana slices (the sample fruit selected for this study) results indicated the moisture content of bananas produced in Mpumalanga Province averaged 75.5±1.5% on a wet basis. The COP of the HP was found to be significantly high - an average 4.7. The influence of the evaporator temperature on the COP was important since it assisted in temperature control during the drying process. It was also observed the COP increased with an increase in room temperature. Drying process results indicated for drying South African bananas a possible optimal drying temperature range was 30-40 °C with 1.5 m/s drying air velocity. Generally, the study demonstrated an ASHPD system was suitable for use in South African climatic conditions. Now South Africa has an opportunity to continue research and to design applications for this green and efficient drying technology - especially for drying biomaterial. This could reduce high energy consumption, something all of South Africa is striving towards.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116483464","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, finishing grinding in the cement production process requires accurate temperature control. To achieve this, Vertical Roller Mills burn fuel to heat the mill interior before grinding initiates. In this paper the fuel cost of reheating a vertical roller mill after an evening load reduction event is compared to the electricity saving gained. Results show that the standard deviation in the paraffin costs experienced in day to day operations is larger than the paraffin costs generated when reheating a Vertical Roller Mill after a load reduction event. It is concluded in this paper that the paraffin costs are relatively small when compared to the electricity saving gained. It is therefore feasible to implement load management projects on vertical roller mills used for cement milling despite the additional fuel costs experienced.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115959491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Compressed air on mines is traditionally distributed via compressed air ring networks where multiple shafts are supplied with compressed air from an integral system. These compressed air networks make use of a number of compressors feeding the ring from various locations in the network. While these mines have sophisticated control systems to control these compressors, they are not dynamic systems. Compressors are selected based on static priorities for a chosen time period. While this is acceptable for some days it is not always the ideal solution. The compressed air demand of the ring is dynamic and it is often difficult to estimate the future needs of the system. In this document the Dynamic Compressor Selector (DCS) is described as a solution to this problem. The DCS is a computer-based control system with the aim of dynamically calculating a control pressure set-point, using the demand for compressed air as well as indicating the optimal compressors to supply the required compressed air. This will reduce the power requirement of the compressed air ring as well as reduce compressor cycling. The preliminary results indicated significant electricity savings could be possible.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117084608","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The techniques were tested on a prototype Pico hydropower system modeled for the site developed in western Uganda by the Centre for Research in Energy and Energy Conservation. The case study scheme to date is manually operated, a process that requires constant attention due to variations in load. This demonstrated the need for an automatic load controller. The site specifications were considered when designing models using Matlab simulink employing the automatic load control techniques. These model designs are simple so that it is affordable for local practical application. The proposed designed control techniques presented in this paper are composed of logic gates, IGBT switch, uncontrolled diode rectifier, the PID controller and other semiconductor devices supplying an electrical load and a ballast load. In addition, the response of the case study site and the Matlab model to load variations is presented.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"191 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123010603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, energy management systems typically provide users with specialised tools and reports to facilitate the ongoing energy management process. However, an energy management system that does not consider energy related data does not provide a comprehensive cross-industry solution. A system that is capable of comparing energy data with related data such as production, budget and cost data presents further opportunities for comprehensive energy management. The logistics of data retrieval and management from a wide variety of data sources is, however, problematic because of diverse data formats and modes of access. These data sources range from databases to document based reports and accounts. Energy personnel on different authority levels require access to different data to fulfil their specific role in the energy management process. Furthermore, individual energy personnel have their own preferences regarding the type and graphical representation of data. Therefore, this paper presents a generic approach to integrating data required for comprehensive energy management. The results obtained from practical implementations also proved the approach's adherence to the requirements of different industries. These initial implementations only included electrical energy and related data, while future implementations will include data for other energy sources.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124251807","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system consists of a solar collector equipped with evacuated heat pipes which supply the heat from the sun to a circulating fluid in a collective manifold. Data was obtained indoors by the use of a solar simulator during experiments conducted in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). A solar simulator consisting of an array of halogen Flood lights was used to heat the evacuated heat pipes which in turn transferred the heat to the circulating fluid feeding a heat exchanger in the system's geyser. The irradiance from the solar simulator that could be controlled by means of variable transformers controlling the voltage to the halogen lamps was measured over the surface of the evacuated heat pipe collector. The procedure allowed for exposure of the collector to the solar simulator for seven hours daily and thereafter normal cooling of the system. Preliminary results so far have shown that it is possible to use modern domestic water heating systems to produce steam which when condensed becomes potable water.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"424 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116531876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In view of this, vegetable oil is a promising alternative because it has several advantages - it is renewable, environmentally friendly, and produced easily in rural areas, where there is no acute need for modern forms of energy. Hence biofuel and biodiesel are seen as alternatives to diesel in powering diesel engines. This study looks at the effects of fuel and exhaust back pressure on diesel engine performance when fuelled with biofuel and biodiesel blends. The overall results of the study show that there may be an opportunity for using certain biofuel blends in specific applications as there is no significant deterioration in overall engine performance.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126646270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Energy plays a fundamental role in shaping and reshaping of the human condition and is therefore essential for human survival and a major factor for economic growth. There is a strong correlation between socio-economic development and the availability of electricity. The third world countries are faced with chronic electricity problems, which are hindering economic developmental programmes, notwithstanding the availability of vast natural resources in these countries. This paper sees and discusses over dependence of foreign energy production technologies, expatriates for operation and maintenance of power facilities as major failure of energy infrastructural growth and consequent inhibitor of economic growth. It went further to suggest capacities building in the area of renewable energy especially design and fabrication of small hydro power (SHP) facilities (parts and systems) and their production technologies as a key for better energy delivery for third world countries in African economic growth.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"360 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122777806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through case studies and analysis, it underscores the urgency for a shift in asset management paradigms in the developing world where cost of un-served energy may account for up to 27.7% of energy sales. It applies systems thinking philosophy to analyse root causes of problems, then uses statistical and probabilistic inferences to solve them. Failure statistics for transmission and distribution transformers are processed using least squares method, maximum likelihood estimation and method of moments in order to determine Weibull life modelling parameters. Modelling of reliability functions and costs associated with planned and run-to-failure strategies were implemented using MATLAB algorithms based on the parameter estimates. Results show that the run-to-failure strategy achieves short term cost savings, but it eventually leads to unsustainable energy supply. They further show how problems cascade down from the generation to the distribution business units. The study advances use of Loss of Energy Expectation and Loss of Load Expected as metrics to augment traditional use of availability in order to measure the loss margin. The model developed can be used in risk management, in power asset management planning and in developing strategies on industrial and commercial use of energy in power utilities.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131850092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The universities constitute the primary consumers of electrical energy through the utilization of hot water. The research focused on the construction of a data acquisition system that monitored the demand and hot water profiles of a 12.0 kW Calorifier. The DAS comprised of 1 current transducer that measured current, hence determined the power consumption, 3 temperature sensors that measured the inlet cold water, outlet hot water into the residence and the room temperature and also a flow meter that measured the volume of incoming cold water into the Calorifier. In addition a regression model was also developed correlating the energy consumption during the heating up cycle to the total volume of cold water flowing into the Calorifier, the average room temperature, the average inlet, the outlet water temperature as well as the time taken for the heating up cycle. The reliefF algorithm was used to rank the predictors by weight of importance to the energy consumed. The results depicted that on an average weekday for the month of March 2013, a volume of 1953 L of hot water was drawn and an electrical energy of 137.85 kWh was consumed with a load factor of 0.464. Furthermore the reliefF algorithm showed that all the predictors were primary factors except of the room temperature. The mathematic model could always be used in adjusting the baseline, when computing the energy saving after retrofitting the Calorifier with an ASHP.","PeriodicalId":149169,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on the Eleventh industrial and Commercial Use of Energy","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114632790","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
