It investigates whether Socrates' comportment as a philosopher constitutes a necessary threat to established political authority, and whether there is something intrinsic in being a philosopher that makes one especially vulnerable to political authority. The question is addressed within the context of the Hippias Major, which pits Socrates against a man who is both a sophist and a politician, and which contains a foreboding speech about the possible trouble that Socrates might run into at the hands of the state.Résumé:Cet article se demande s'il est possible de dire quelque chose de philosophique à propos de la trajectoire qui a mené Socrate à son procès. Il cherche à savoir si le comportement de Socrate en tant que philosophe constitue une menace inéluctable pour l'autorité politique établie et s'il y a quelque chose d'intrinsèque au fait d'être philosophe qui rend particulièrement vulnérable à l'autorité politique. La question est abordée dans le cadre de l'Hippias majeur, qui met Socrate aux prises avec un homme à la fois sophiste et politicien et qui présente un discours prémonitoire sur les ennuis potentiels que Socrate pourrait avoir aux mains de l'état.","PeriodicalId":148727,"journal":{"name":"Echos du monde classique: Classical news and views","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125384258","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I argue that Socrates employs these not primarily as treatments for arrogance or epistemic hubris but rather for mistaken caring, defined as objectively incorrect attachments of importance and value. Identifying the target of Socrates' shaming as mistaken caring clarifies both his diagnosis of the primary ethical sickness of his fellow citizens and the nature of his prescribed remedy. It shows the diagnosis to be more cogent and to cut more deeply than if it were focused on inflated ego and epistemic hubris; and it shows the prescribed remedy to be much more demanding as well. Socrates is calling on his fellow citizens to recognize the worthlessness of their current lives and to replace them with lives founded on a radically different set of cares and values.Résumé:La honte et le reproche comptent parmi les traitements sévères que Socrate administre dans son rôle de docteur des âmes athéniennes. Je défends l'idée qu'il n'utilise pas ces traitements dans l'intention première de soigner l'arrogance ou l'hybris épistémique, mais plutôt pour guérir une attention fautive, définie comme un attachement à des priorités et des valeurs objectivement incorrectes. Identifier cette attention fautive comme la cible des attaques de Socrate éclaire à la fois son diagnostic sur la maladie essentiellement éthique de ses concitoyens et la nature du remède prescrit. Cette explication rend le diagnostic plus convaincant et plus pénétrant que s'il portait sur leur ego surdimensionné et leur hubris épistémique, et rend le remède prescrit beaucoup plus exigeant aussi. Socrate requiert de ses concitoyens qu'ils reconnaissent l'ineptie de leur vie actuelle et la remplace par une vie fondée sur un ensemble radicalement différent de soins et des valeurs.","PeriodicalId":148727,"journal":{"name":"Echos du monde classique: Classical news and views","volume":"149 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127266190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Harris","doi":"10.3138/MOUS.15.3-02","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3138/MOUS.15.3-02","url":null,"abstract":"In 399 bc, Socrates was condemned to death by a jury consisting of 500 (or 501) Athenian citizens; the official charge was “impiety” or, more specifically, not recognizing the gods of the city, inventing new divinities, and corrupting the youth. As reported in a moving death scene in Plato’s Phaedo, Socrates died in prison one month after his conviction as a result of drinking hemlock, despite having had ample opportunity to escape and hence avoid death. Since then, Socrates has become one of the most influential figures in the Western world; it is perhaps no exaggeration to compare the magnetism he has exerted on us to that of Jesus, Buddha, or Muhammad. Many questions persist today concerning the circumstances surrounding Socrates’ trial and execution, as well as his life and the substance of his philo sophical views. How and why was Socrates brought to trial? Why did the Athenian jurors, who were after all members of the world’s first democracy, find him guilty? Were the official charges against Socrates in fact trumped up? Was the real motivation behind his conviction political? Why did Socrates refuse to accept the opportunity to escape execution and instead submit to a verdict that both he and his friends thought unjust? Would we not expect Socrates, of all people, to refuse to carry out a legal injunction that he considered immoral? At a time when the continued importance of the humanities within the academy is constantly under attack, it is especially crucial to convey to those working outside of our own specialties that engagement with a momentous historical event—even one that took place in ancient Athens over 2000 years ago—can nevertheless have an immeasurable impact on how we interpret and react to urgent challenges facing citizens of democratic societies today. The enigmatic and controversial figure of Socrates provides the perfect foil against which we can evaluate how individuals who are perceived as","PeriodicalId":148727,"journal":{"name":"Echos du monde classique: Classical news and views","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116385415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main goal is to identify the relationship between social patterns and the spatial configuration of houses. The application of different space syntax methods (accessibility, relative asymmetry, and control value) is the principal means of analysis. This procedure allows us to identify some spatial patterns linked with different patterns of domestic behaviour. In addition, we propose a review of the local epigraphic evidence as a basis for an analysis of the relation between family structures and citizen status in Roman Celtiberia. Inspired by the comparison of the two kinds of evidence, we have also developed an interpretative approach to explain the uneven introduction of Roman models of domestic architecture in some specific sectors of local society.Résumé:Cet article propose d'analyser les espaces domestiques de l'époque romaine mis au jour dans la région de la Celtibérie en Espagne centrale, en s'intéressant plus particulièrement aux relations entre les structures sociales et l'organisation spatiale des maisons. À cette fin, nous avons utilisé différentes méthodes d'analyse issues de la théorie de la syntaxe spatiale : accessibilité, asymétrie relative et valeur de contrôle. Cette recherche nous a permis d'identifier certaines configurations spatiales liées à différents comportements domestiques. En outre, nous proposons, par l'examen des sources épigraphiques locales, une analyse des relations entre les structures familiales en Celtibérie romaine et le statut de citoyen. La comparaison de ces deux types de témoignages nous a également inspiré une approche interactive pour expliquer l'introduction inégale des modèles romains d'architecture domestique dans certains secteurs spécifiques de la société locale.","PeriodicalId":148727,"journal":{"name":"Echos du monde classique: Classical news and views","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122181415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the small late Roman villa of c. ad 370/375, the entire surviving length of the south corridor was uncovered for the first time; it is floored in polychrome geometric mosaic. Of particular interest is a mosaic \"welcome mat\" at the entrance, where a foot measuring-rod is depicted. The overall dimensions of the adjacent basilican storehouse, destroyed in the mid-fourth century before the construction of the late Roman villa, were established, and the use of the Greek Samian foot-unit in its design confirmed. Preliminary investigation of a kiln yielded bricks stamped with the name of Philippianus; others nearby record a separate name, Cn [. . .] Cylin[drus]. In the northern part of the site, part of a well-preserved bathhouse was excavated, including portions of two heated rooms and two adjacent hot-water pools. Its walls stand up to 2.30 m high; there were geometric mosaics on the floors and marble veneer on the walls. The date is uncertain (late fourth century?). On decommissioning, the baths were stripped of reusable material, including tubuli and the large bricks spanning the gaps between hypocaust pilae; to extract the latter the mosaic floors were smashed. Over 200 terracotta vaulting tubes used in roofing came from one of the pools. The end of the baths occurred sometime in the second half of the fifth century ad. Of the sixth- and seventh-century rural settlement which succeeded the élite structures, a portion of building with a paved yard and external staircase to an upper floor was also excavated.Résumé:Une troisième saison de fouilles a eu lieu sur le domaine rural romain de Gerace (dans la province d'Enna, en Sicile) en 2016.
