All three — irrespective of\u0000their geographical distance and peripheral locations — became important for England in the\u0000late 16th century because of their economic and political potential. This resulted in a surge\u0000of interest in Poland, Turkey and Russia, and provided a significantly broader context in\u0000which they were presented in the emerging English public sphere. Nieoczywista biografia wojskowego i polityka","authors":"","doi":"10.36693/202004p.824-848","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.36693/202004p.824-848","url":null,"abstract":"Wacław Jaruzelski — a hero or a traitor?\u0000An unobvious biography of a military man and politician\u0000The article is devoted to a rather forgotten figure of an ancestor of General Wojciech\u0000Jaruzelski, Wacław (1658–1706). The military and political career of the latter unfolded\u0000during the reign of John III Sobieski and the first decade of the reign of Augustus II. Born in\u0000a family that belonged to petty nobility in the Drohiczyn region in Podlasie, he threw in his\u0000lot with a local magnate, Stefan Mikołaj Branicki, owner of vast estates around Tykocin and\u0000Białystok. Jaruzelski owed the prominent position achieved in the army and among his fellow\u0000noblemen to both his patron’s protection, and his own skills and accomplishments. Thanks to\u0000them he was able to move from a purely titulary dignity of stolnik (pantler) of Novgorod to\u0000the prestigious office of chorąży (standard-bearer) of the Bielsk region, which gave him fairly\u0000broad prerogatives. His activity in the public sphere went beyond the local horizon; he often\u0000served as expert parliamentarian and judge. An examination of Wacław Jaruzelski’s colourful\u0000biography makes it possible to take a closer look at characteristic phenomena of his day. As\u0000we accompany him in the successive stages of his career, we can observe the destructive\u0000impact of factional divisions within one local assembly (the dispute between Stefan Mikołaj\u0000Branicki and Jan Gniński, Voivode of Bratslav) and then the entire country (the Sapieha\u0000case).
