We present a fast-response miniaturized electronic nose (Fast-eNose) composed of four naked MOX sensors and a digital band-pass filter that can boost the bandwidth of the system close to 1 Hz. The device was attached to a fast photo-ionization detector (330 Hz) to quantify the response time during exposure to turbulent gas plumes. The results indicate that the digital filter can improve the response time by at least a factor of 4, bringing new possibilities to mobile robot olfaction.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131621234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the making of each test, a group of bacteria samples was prepared, which consisted of individual E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella oxytoca colonies transferred to nutrient agar plates and suspended in sterile water. In order to validate the obtained results, the Membrane Filter Technique (MFT) was used and the measurement discrimination was made through PCA, reaching 99.4% of variance with the E-tongue. Similarly, a 97.6% variance was obtained for the bacteria discrimination with the E-nose. A Neural Network PNN was implemented only for the bacteria classification reaching 86% of accuracy, getting a very similar value in each one of the methods.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"176 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116643107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The gas sensing mechanism is utilizing Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) sensor which based on the reflected light change caused by the refractive index changes of gas where exposing to the metal nanoparticles layer. The LSPR layer was prepared by vacuum sputtering of AuNPs on a glass substrate, growing in silver growth solution and consequently thermal annealing. An optical system which composed of fiber probe, light source and spectrometer was developed to detect the change of reflected light. It was found that compared with incident light irradiating from metal nanoparticles side, glass side could obtain clearer spectra peak. In addition, a LSPR sensor which had 5 hours silver growth time has the best response to acetic acid gas. This work demonstrated that the reflection detection system has a great potential in gas detecting area.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129242348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An approach linking data analysis tools is presented based on unsupervised identification of recurrent patterns from data produced by hybrid instrumental odour monitoring systems. A self-organizing map is built and clustered in order to identify air typologies at a e-nose site; they are interpreted thanks to data fusion of sensorial data from citizen complaints, olfactometric measures, air pollutants and meteorological data. A supervised Kohonen network generates quantitative relationships between multisensor patterns and sparse olfatometric measures on air samples timely collected after complaints or instrumental threshold exceedance, allowing high frequency estimates of odour concentrations.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"130 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122624633","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we first categorize various olfactory display techniques in analogy with visual displays for AR. Then we report our recent work on spatial scent presentation. Our approach is a counterpart of spatial AR, that overlays information onto the real world. In order to cover various aspects of olfactory experiences, we make use of multiple methods: wind and vortex rings. We investigated the human sensitivity on the wind direction to show the design requirement of wind display. Also, we considered to use a vortex ring to transfer the scent encapsulated in it. By letting two vortex rings collide and collapse at the target point, a local scent distribution can be generated in the air. However, this approach has been suffered from the uncertainty of vortex collision. For stable generation of mid-air scent distribution, we explored various aspects in expelling vortex rings.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122785894","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, this study attempted to develop a smartphone-based SCISE sensing system, which integrates SCISEs with a smartphone-based sensing device. SCISEs were fabricated with screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE). After electrodeposition of a solid-contact (SC) layer, the ion-selective membranes were drop-casted on the SC-SPCE to make the SCISEs. We chose potassium (K+), ammonium (NH4+) and calcium (Ca2+) as target ions. The smartphone-based sensing device measures concentration with potentiometric method. The measured signals were controlled and computed by a microcontroller, then were sent to a smartphone by Bluetooth. Next, the results were computed, calibrated and displayed by the smartphone. The developed system could simultaneously measure different ions and display the result by the smartphone. Each SCISE in this study has Nernstian response and the linear range for detection was from 10−1 to 10−5 M. Finally, the smartphone-based SCISE sensing system was used to measure hydroponic samples during the cultivation of lettuce. The result show that the smartphone-based SCISE sensing system has the potential for on-site measurement. Further, the system could be used in electronic tongue applications.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128006206","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The key factor to realize this function is to detect different substances with the same sensitive element. In this paper, the human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells endogenously expressed the human bitter receptor, T2R16. Meanwhile, an olfactory receptor, ODR-10, was transfected on the plasma membrane of the cells at the same time. T2R16 could specifically respond to bitter compounds, which can be monitored by cell-impedance sensor. The ODR-10 receptor can also specifically respond to diacetyl, which was cultured on the microelectrode arrays to establish a novel biomimetic sensor for odor detection. The results represent a dose-dependent responses in a certain concentration range. Moreover, the cell-impedance biosensor enabled a quick toxicity detection of salicin. In conclusion, the biomimetic sensors based on extracellular recording in vitro show great potential for use in both basic research and practical applications.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114091742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
