Specifically, these will be used as highly integrated heating elements for conductometric gas sensing in self-heating operation [1]. We discuss in detail how inductively-coupled-plasma (ICP) and KOH-etching, interspace filling and electron-beam physical vapor deposition (EBPVD) technologies can be adjusted and combined to obtain nanorods as thin as 300 nm in arbitrarily large and regular arrays (e.g. 1×1, 3×3, 10×10). These structures can be heated up with power values in the microwatt range, as demonstrated by the heat-activated response to Ethanol that we present here. Overall, we report a system with efficient self-heating that can be produced at a wafer scale using conventional microelectronic processing.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132920491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Acidification plays an important role in cell metabolism, in which the extracellular pH change is used to indicate the vitality of cells. For extracellular detection of cell metabolic substances, light addressable potentiometric sensor (LAPS) has many advantages, such as high sensitivity, easy encapsulation, and convenient integration with microfluidic system for cell experiments. LAPS is a spatially resolved biochemical sensor based on field-effect. Characteristic test experiments and cell metabolism experiments were carried out to determine the performance of LAPS by monitoring the pH change of hepatoma HepG2 cells. The pH sensitivity is 51.18mV/pH, and the extracellular pH of HepG2 cells changes from 7.19 to 6.28 after high glucose (125mM) medium was injected. The results showed that the microfluidic system presented good performance in real-time detection of cell acidification.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114149769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The robotic swarm is composed of nano Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), based on the Crazyflie 2.0 quadrocopter, and small lightweight Metal Oxide (MOX) gas sensors for measuring the Total Volatile Organic Compound (TVOC), which is a measure for IAQ. An indoor localization and positioning system is used to estimate the absolute 3D position of the swarm similar to GPS. A test scenario was built up to validate and optimize the swarm for the intended applications. Besides calibration of the IAQ sensors, we performed experiments to investigate the influence of the rotor downwash on the gas measurements at different altitudes and compared them with stationary measurements. Moreover, we did a first evaluation of the gas distribution mapping performance. Based on this novel IAQ monitoring concept, new algorithms in the field of Mobile Robot Olfaction (MRO) are planned to be developed exploiting the abilities of an aerial robotic swarm.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"282 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115331439","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Incorporation of Cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanoparticles have enhanced the response of the SPCEs as compared to the unmodified one. The polymerization of pyrrole in the presence of the template molecule has exhibited the detection of CP of the order of parts per billion (ppb). Electrochemical properties of the developed sensor were characterized by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), respectively. In its first phase of development, the SPCEs coated MIP based sensor was found to distinguish different concentrations of CP successfully and exhibited a linear range from 0.1 ppb to 100 ppb of CP. Selectivity studies also revealed that the sensor can detect the target analyte efficiently in the presence of other interferents. These results paved the way for the further advancement of the sensor regarding the detection of CP for real-time applications.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114669609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bitter receptor is a kind of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), the research finds that the mice sperm cells contain slot of bitter taste gene expression. When the GPCR is activated by bitter compounds, a series of cascade reactions can lead to the changes in intracellular calcium concentration. In addition, the intracellular calcium concentration changes can be detected using the specific fluorescence probe. Based on the mechanisms mentioned above, this study proposes a novel biosensor that utilized sperm cell as primary sensing element, and employed Fluo4-AM and flow cytometry to measure the concentration changes of intracellular calcium ions for the detection of bitter compounds. Three bitter compounds were investigated by analyzing the responsive fluorescent intensity changes under various concentrations. Furthermore, the responses of this biosensor to five basic flavors were examined to evaluate the specificity of this bitter biosensor. The results revealed that this bitter biosensor could respond to bitter compounds in a dose-dependent manner with high specificity. This biosensor may provide a promising approach for detecting various bitter compounds.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124937811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Existing gas detection methods typically use prior knowledge of the target analytes. However, in some scenarios, the analytes to be detected are not fully known in advance, and preparing a dedicated model is not possible. To address this issue, we propose a gas detection approach using an ensemble of one-class classifiers. The proposed approach is initialized by learning a Mahalanobis-based and a Gaussian based model using clean air only. During the sampling process, the presence of chemicals is detected by the initialized system, which allows to learn a one-class nearest neighbourhood model without supervision. From then on the gas detection considers the predictions of the three one-class models. The proposed approach is validated with real-world experiments, in which a mobile robot equipped with an e-nose was remotely controlled to interact with different chemical analytes in an open environment.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129363451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All of volatile compounds do not contribute to the formation of odor. Thus, it is very important to identify key odorants from each food and drink for developments of flavor and fragrance. The omission method is useful to identify key odorants. In the method, a standard sample consisted of all volatile compounds and test samples, which are omitted one or some volatiles, are reconstructed by mixing authentic chemicals. Then, odor qualities are compared between the standard and the test samples by sniffing; if odor qualities are different between two samples, the omitted compounds are key odorants. However, it is not easy to prepare omission samples, because we have to identify chemical structures of compounds consisting of target odors, obtain authentic compounds, and reconstruct target odors that may be consisted of several compounds. To overcome these problems, we developed a high-throughput GC-MS system to prepare the omission samples automatically. The developed system is not necessary to identify chemical structures of candidate compounds, and to prepare authentic compounds for the reconstruction of target odors. The system innovatively improves analytical methods for identification of key odorants from foods and drinks.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"466 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132550701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
