In olive orchards, infestations of olive scale, a common pest, damage the fruit. This study applied an electronic nose to determine whether oil from fruit infested with olive scale had specific odor markers, which would be useful for quality control, because they could indicate contamination with oil from infested fruit. A HERACLES II electronic nose (Alpha MOS) analysis pre-screened odor compounds from oil of infested fruit. A comparison between the overall odor profiles of oil from healthy and infested fruit revealed important differences in the volatile compound concentrations. In total, 10 peaks were specific to oil from the infested fruit. Using the Alpha MOS’s AroChemBase library, the peaks were identified as mostly corresponding to compounds associated with the off-odor of oil from infested fruit.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124812002","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present contribution presents a technology platform including a miniaturized electronic tongue based on electropolymerized ion-sensitive films, microcontroller-based data acquisition, a smartphone interface and cloud computing back-end for data storage and deployment of machine learning models. The sensor array records a series of differential voltages without use of a true reference electrode and the resulting time-series potentiometry data is used to train supervised machine learning algorithms. For trained systems, inferencing tasks such as the classification of liquids are realized within less than 1 minute including data acquisition at the edge and inference using the cloud-deployed machine learning model. Preliminary demonstration of the complete electronic tongue technology stack is reported for the classification of beverages and mineral water.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125498691","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we developed an array type gas sensor to detect VOCs. This sensor is based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Molecularly Imprinted Sol-Gels (MISG) were patterned on the surface of Au nano-islands to add molecular selectivity. The substrate is separated into 9 regions on AuNPs by using polyimide tape partitions and spin coating MISG solutions for each region. Multi channels sensor was fabricated with this substrate after this process. The sensor’s sensitives were compared for each channel. The result indicated that the sensitivity of target gas channel was higher than into others.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121682399","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we analyzed the effect of VOC concentrations and of temperatures from 5°C to 35°C on the equilibrium response profiles. Fingerprint patterns for 1-butanol are strongly conserved thanks to a quadratic normalization of the row equilibrium data obtained from our opto-eN with Surface Plasmon Resonance imaging (SPRi) detection. Furthermore, a power law behavior of the rescaling factor with VOC concentration was observed and led to a Limit Of Detection (LOD) of 70 ppb for 1-butanol at 25°C.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121499428","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sensor was constructed depositing a sensing film of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) on a long period fiber grating. The measurements were performed in a Teflon chamber, where the alcohol samples were injected at different concentrations. The measured samples were methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol. There was observed a different behavior of the response to methanol, which was attributed to the fact that its refractive index is lower than the one for PDMS, while for the other samples is the opposite. The calibration curves of the sensor response were obtained, which were fitted to a second order polynomial with high correlation coefficients. Furthermore, the relationship between the sensitivity and the molecular weight was determined.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127928837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In our research, we use neural networks (NNs) to overcome these difficulties by applying long short-term memory deep neural networks (LSTM-DNNs) to time series data taken from a gas sensor array and anemometer to estimate the position of a gas source. In this paper, we present NNs for GSL with the ability to use various length input data and estimate a gas source location each time-step. The sensing characteristics of NO2 and H2S gases are investigated in changing temperature and concentration conditions.
