Their utilization is diversified into other applications such as pepper spray for defense, medicine for healthcare and pest control in the agriculture sector. In order to meet the industry demand, various countries with a suitable tropical climate have grown black pepper as one of their export commodities. Indirectly, reputation and quality of the black pepper are associated with the growth origin as the soil quality, handling processes, and growing environment will influence the final grade of the black pepper. Geographical origin has become one of the parameters in determining the price of the pepper. In view of this, there is a pressing demand to have a standard to identify the growth origin of black pepper to avoid counterfeit issues with the intention to scope for higher market price. This paper reports an attempt to determine the growth origin of black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) based on the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) profile recorded using high resolution gas chromatography mass spectrometry system. In this work, black peppers from two different countries of origin; namely from Malaysia and India were selected as a case study. A total of 252 of black pepper samples from these two origins were extracted for non-polar compounds using a standard method and the VOCs profiles were then subjected to Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Fold Change Analysis. PCA cluster plots showed that Indian and Malaysian black pepper can be confidently discriminated by means of unique non-polar compounds present in the pepper samples.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124814470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, among a large quantity of the extracted features, only a few are actually informative for gas classification. Even worse, some of the features may degrade the accuracy of classification. To solve this problem, we propose a minimum distance inliers probability (MDIP) feature selection (FS) method that eliminates unnecessary features by considering their degree of clustering and degree of separation. The performance was validated using an open-access dataset. After applying the MDIP method, the number of features was reduced from 48 to 18 in average, while the average classification accuracy was improved from 46.45% to 80.6%, validating the efficiency of the MDIP method.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125491255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The selection of appropriate odorant receptors (ORs) in insect species can enable the detection of target odors. In this study, we developed a sensing element that detects human-derived odorants by functionally expressing insect ORs in Sf21 cells. Using a database of olfactory responses, we selected target ORs from two insect species, i.e., Drosophila melanogaster and Anopheles gambiae, for introduction into Sf21 cells along with the calcium-sensitive fluorescent protein gene GCaMP6s. Based on calcium imaging, Sf21 cells expressing DmelOR13a responded to the human-derived odorant 1-octen-3-ol and Sf21 cells expressing AgamOR16 responded to the human aging-related odorant Z2-nonenal. These results indicate that target odorants can be effectively detected by selecting optimal insect ORs based on response characteristic data, suggesting the potential to extend the scope of ORs used for sensing technologies to diverse insect species.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131087342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is widely found in plant tissues as well as in fresh fruits and vegetables. Accurate determination of vitamin C content is of great significance for diet and health care. In this work, MnO2 nanoflakes as the biomimetic oxidase was used to react with VC and TMB was used as a chromogenic agent. The color of the final solution reflects the concentration of VC. And the bionic E-eye as a portable in-situ detection platform was designed to analyzed the color change in 10 s by photographing. By optimizing experimental conditions, the linear range of this method for VC detection is from 7.8 μM to 62.5 μM and the detection limit 7.65 μM which is much lower than other methods. Besides, this methods shows good selectivity, short reaction time (10 min) and also was used for VC detection in artificial urine samples, which shows great potential in disease monitoring.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"153 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116728157","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aiming at the above problems, a method for assessing and predicting fishery water quality using electrochemical sensor array such as pH, dissolved oxygen and ammonia nitrogen carried by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is proposed. The T-shaped floating structure of the UAV can realize the take-off and landing of water surface. The sensors in the structure carry out real-time detection in the process of UAV floating. The sensor data is transmitted to the server backstage by wireless network. Then the time series analysis is applied to assess and predict the water quality data. Finally, the conclusion is displayed on the application program. The results show that the scheme can assess fishery water quality efficiently and has high prediction accuracy (95.1%).","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133811940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, an in vivo bioelectronic tongue for sweetness detection is constructed using rat gustatory system and implantable microelectrode array. By recording extracellular potentials in “sweet hotspot” within rat gustatory cortex, sweetener-evoked response patterns are generated by neural decoding algorithms. The results show that sweetener stimulation can cause a significant increase in the power spectral density of the local field potentials signal at 50–80 Hz, and its dynamic response in the time domain can be used for identification and classification of sweetness. Meanwhile, quantitative study shows that power of response signal is dose-dependent and the detection range covers sugar contents of daily beverages. Comparisons with results of human taste panelists also confirm that this in vivo bioelectronic tongue can work across species and has the potential to mimic human taste and evaluate sweetness in practical applications.","PeriodicalId":145116,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133077953","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
